Telstar was one of my dad's favorite songs. Every time he'd play it, I couldn't help but get a "lonely" feeling. I couldn't help trying to imagine space. My dad and I used to sit in the backyard on summer nights. He taught me a lot about astronomy. I remember us watching Sputnik cross the sky. And the first Telstar satellite was launched in July of 1962. I made sure that song was on his list at his memorial. (Thanks dad!) Sorry I ramble. I get carried away whenever I get to talk about music. 😄 Thank you for another great video! You're definitely my favorite "old guy". 😊♥️ (I thought of yet another suggestion...🙄😄.... maybe a video about "The Greatest Guitarist You've Never Heard Of".... Rory Gallagher. I was fortunate enough to see him back in '85. Even got to shake his hand! ☺️) If you read all this, then may your day be filled with smiles. 😊

Beautiful sharing. There was much excitement in Ann Arbor in the early mid 60's as our parents were working on the space program. Every launch was crucial. And we lost White and McDivitt in a fire. Many graduates of our aerospace program went right into the mission. Our education system immediately began offering Russian as a second language.

Way back in the early 1960’s their album “Walk, Don’t Run” was my first LP. I literally wore the grooves out of it. And, yes I can still play it on my Strat… One day, not so long ago I picked up a copy of it ( the grooves weren’t worn out) and the intervening 60 or so years disappeared…

Excellent piece on this most important group. The Ventures were a great example of the old adage “if at once you don’t succeed, keep on trying until you do succeed”. Here’s a strange vinyl collecting fact about one of the band’s more popular releases : “Walk Don’t Run Vol 2”. This LP contained the reworked track “Walk Don’t Run ‘64”. The album cover portrayed the guys sprawled on the floor with a young lady standing dressed in Lemon lime colored pants and top w/heels. Upon close inspection of the original copies of the album, one can see perspiration stains on the armpits of the band members shirts. Evidently, this was too much for the average consumer so later copies had the stains airbrushed out. Goes to show that the other old adage is also true: “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” Ha ! PS. That 1965 Live in Japan concert can be found here on YT and is so great ! Manic energy on that show.

A good story well told. Would be interesting to learn where that rhythm guitar two-bar run down originated. vi V IV V of iv. It became a Runaway hit progression.
@the_guitar_trooper5 ай бұрын
I never even attempted to track down that progression. It’s so ubiquitous that it’s taken for granted.
@jeffgreen74995 ай бұрын
@@the_guitar_trooper The Andalusian Cadence is adopted from Flamenco Music. It is the progression comprising four chords descending i > bVII > bVI > V progression with respect to the Aeolian mode (natural minor key). Traceable back to the Renaissance, its effective sonorities made it one of the most popular progressions in classical music. Despite the name it is not a true cadence (i.e., occurring only once, when ending a phrase, section, or piece of music; it is most often used as an ostinato (repeating over and over again). It is heard in rock songs such as "Runaway" by Del Shannon. The chords are related: Aminor followed by GMajor which can be interpreted as A11(not Major or minor), followed by F which can be interpreted as Aminor with a #5, followed by EMajor(the Dominant Chord that returns to Aminor)

I was wondering if you were going to mention how the Ventures lent their popularity to promoting Mosrite guitars after Semie Moseley discovered Nokie Edwards loved his Mosrite. Our local music store carried the "Ventures Edition" Mosrite guitars, but my brother tried one out and said the action was set way too high and when he tried to adjust it, the manager booted him out of the store. By then we had traded in our Teisco Del Ray ET-200 for a pre-CBS Fender Musicmaster. That was such a great guitar. Got swiped by some hoodrat from my apartment the night I moved in -late 1970s.
@the_guitar_trooper5 ай бұрын
Funny you should bring this up. I deleted a segment during final review of this video regarding the Mosrite deal because it began to wander off subject and slowed the pace of the story. Semie did cut a promotional deal with the group that expired in 1968 which included the Mosrite Venture models, at which time the guys began being supplied by Fender again. Yeah…. About the display model playability…I always tell folks that typically the playing action on a guitar in a store is rarely great and only broadly within specs otherwise. Barring mechanical issues or build defects, any guitar at any price can (many times) be made to play quite well for most people if the right technician does the work.
@2011littlejohn15 ай бұрын
I was with a punk band in Germany sometime in the 90's and a US band got up and played a very futuristic electronic sounding set with guitars which had the name Ventures on the head stock. I'm certain it was something to do with the band of that name.
@the_guitar_trooper5 ай бұрын
The Mosrite Ventures guitar models were part of the promotional agreement between Mosrite and the group. The relationship ended in 1968, making those original models worth a lot to collectors. Semie Moseley worked for a while at the Rickenbacker factory before they fired him for making his own line of guitars - it was then that he decided to start Mosrite. He gained an early reputation for multi-neck instruments and very ‘hot’ pickups.

@@the_guitar_trooper Well he would have been a fool to record a note for note copy in any case. How many times have you listened to Johnny Smith's original version?
