When I was in high school, we were assigned to do a social experiment for my sociology class. I did this exact thing that you are discussing. My boyfriend and I went to a mall and we set it up where he tried to make eye contact with 10 women and 10 men. The result for him was that no women returned eye contact and 8 of the men did and said some greeting. Then, I did the same thing, and no women returned eye contact, but all of the men did and either said, “Hi” or gave me a head nod. My question is, “Is it cultural for women to be more aloof or are men more social with strangers? Or...? Thank you for all of your videos. Love them!

Estudié español durante ocho años en el colegio y ahora he decidido empezar a refrescarme la memoria viendo tus vídeos, que me gustan muchisimo. Vi este video tuyo hace un mes y muchas veces pensé en la conexión que se crea con una persona desconocida simplemente con una mirada. Hace unos días en la biblioteca de la universidad una chica se sentó frente a mí y al sentarse me sonrió, pero yo no me di cuenta. Poco después me di cuenta de que me estaba mirando y levanté la cabeza y la miré directamente a los ojos. Ambos sonreímos, un poquito avergonzados, ella es como si quisiera decir "bueno, me descubriste" y en ese momento sentí una emoción extraña, pero muy hermosa, y desde entonces he estado pensando en ella. No tuve el coraje de presentarme y me arrepiento. Así que creo que entiendo de lo que hablaste en el video. :))

I had a similar experience with a girl on a train when I used to travel to work each day in London. Our eyes used to meet each time we saw each other. When I finally bucked up courage to speak to her she turned out to be from Spain. My Spanish was appalling at the time and her English was not fantastic, also I was extremely nervous. To cut a long story short, nothing came of it but her beautiful face still haunts my memory to this day 😢

Hi Laura. I think realising that you can't really change who you are fundamentally , as in your nature, is a powerful experience to have, because all the judgements that come with not being a certain person no longer seem relevant as you've accepted something that can't really be affected dramatically. It's taken me a long time to realise that being introverted or shy is not something you can always control or get rid of; sometimes it's just a natural response to a situation. But because it feels uncomfortable or undesirable we resist it. It's the learning to accept these things and see them as normal that shifts those uncomfortable or resistant attitudes we have to parts of ourselves that paves the way for a happier life. I think the world finds it's balance in people with such kindness and light like yours. Your genuineness helps me to remember that being sensitive and unique is a good thing, and we should be proud and happy with who we are. Gracias!

El fenómeno/experiencia de contacto visual que mencionaste es un hermoso ejemplo de un comportamiento/conjunto de comportamientos específicos que rara vez se observan en detalle (y no son investigados lo suficiente por psicólogos, psiquiatras, expertos en comportamiento y fisiólogos). Por extraño (y triste) que suene, la mayoría de las personas nunca contemplan la importancia o el matiz del contacto visual mucho (más allá de lo superficial) en su vida. Aquí hay una descripción de palabra/idea/comportamiento que puede interesarle: "Mamihlapinatapai" La palabra "Mamihlapinatapai" se deriva de la lengua yaghan de Tierra del Fuego. Algunos la consideran como "la palabra más sucinta/una de las palabras más sucintas" de toda la cultura humana. También se considera una de las palabras más difíciles de traducir. Se refiere a "una mirada (un tipo específico de contacto visual junto con otras expresiones faciales específicas) compartida por dos personas, cada una de las cuales desea que la otra inicie algo que ambos desean pero que ninguno quiere comenzar / tiene el incentivo completo para iniciar ." Thank you, Laura. Your observation is so astute. The eye contact phenomenon/experience you mentioned is a beautiful example of a specific behavior/set of behaviors that are rarely observed in detail (and not researched nearly enough by psychologists, psychiatrists, behavior experts, and physiologists). As odd (and sad) as it sounds, most people never contemplate the importance of/nuance of eye contact much (beyond the superficial) in their lifetime. Here's a word/idea/behavior description that may interest you: "Mamihlapinatapai" The word "Mamihlapinatapai" is derived from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego. Some consider it as the "most succinct word/one of the most succinct words" in all of human culture. It's also considered one of the hardest words to translate. It refers to "a look (a specific type of eye contact coupled with other specific facial expressions) shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something that they both desire but which neither wants to begin/has the full incentive to initiate."

I'm the same as far as introverted yet outgoing. I think in my teenage years i made myself reach out more, sort of forced myself to become more outgoing. I've taken meyers briggs several times over 20 years and every time ive been INFP. Some people laugh when i tell them i am introverted. But at 66 i still feeling like i am "putting on" the outgoing side of me and its a relief to get home and just be myself.

Cuando tenía veinticinco años, en el metro de Callao, en un día lluvioso, se me sentó una chica con una bolsa de ropa al lado, en el banco del arcén, y me medio susurró algo que no llegué a oír (tengo problemas de oído) pero que identifiqué como: "¿me puedo sentar aquí?". Yo la hice un sitio y se sentó, y poco después nos subimos al tren. Yo me senté en un banco y ella en el suelo, cerca de mí, no enfrente pero casi, a dos metros de distancia. Durante muchas parada, siete, concretamente, quise entablar conversación con ella, porque me parecía bellísima, pero de una manera triste. Era rubia, con el pelo alborotado, e iba vestida muy estilo gótico, con ropa arrugada y estilo _grunge_ . No pude hablar con ella porque no supe cómo hacerlo, como te pasa a ti, también, pero recuerdo muy bien que al levantarme del asiento para salir del vagón, la di la espalda, pensando en todo momento si me estaría mirando estando yo de espaldas. Me di la vuelta antes de salir y, en efecto, me estaba mirando, y esa mirada se me quedó grabada a fuego en la mente, hasta el punto en que todavía hoy, tantos años después, me acuerdo. Y recuerdo, también, que me quedé mirándola a través del cristal del metro hasta que el tren desapareció en el túnel.
