The call aside - it takes massive balls to bounce back from something so negative - especially when we are talking about possibly the most grueling race in all of swimming. Congratulations Owen!

"Props to the ncaa for still letting him swim for the championship" - They didn't "let" him swim, he'd already qualified in a previous race. The officials in his controversial DQ race made a strict ruling that was obviously very disappointing, but in high-level competition athletes are required to know the rules and officials to enforce them. To the athlete's great credit, he put the disappointment of his mistake behind him and went on to give a sterling performance in his next race. That's a perfect scenario all-around, in my opinion.

That's so sad and wrong. I can understand if he went into a lane with someone still swimming in it. But he didn't. Sounds like they need to make the rule be do not celebrate anything until the whole race is over. This is heartbreaking to not be 1st with a record swim Owen had. Not just a personal best but all-time record. I swam more for fun. Then I was pressured by the coach who was my PE teacher. She knew about my swimming history at a different school. When you're a fingertip away, in practice of matching your teammate (6"6') and yells at you (5"4') in front of everyone, that I did whatever a second too slow, it just ruins it for you.

He didn't mess up anything. The rules are written too vague without the intent explicitly stated and a referee used that loophole to lash out on him. The rules exist to prevent those from interfering with swimmers. He has ever done that.

At some point we as a society lost track of the fact that one of the reasons we teach our children about sports is to teach them discipline and how to control their emotions. It isn't supposed to be about winning, or entertaining the masses. Not until you get to the pro level, anyway. That's just the bonus you get if you happen to be the best performer on any given day. He was so excited and proud that he won that he lost control of his emotions, forgot the damn rules, and acted in an undisciplined manner. The shame of his being dq'ed from that other race is not that it was a bad call, it wasn't. It's that the ref had to teach him a lesson his coaches should have drilled into him from the beginning. STAY IN YOUR LANE.

It is a bad call, because he didn't interfere with any other swimmer. The lane he fell into was his teammate's who was already done. If he'd fallen into an active lane, then fine, but it's still a bullshit call. He didn't forget the rules. He straddled the lane line like so many do, slipped, and fell the wrong way. If he falls back into his own lane, he gets the win he deserved.
