Timothy Dalton got shafted by the studio and the Bond producers - kind of the same way Brosnan got shafted years later by the studio and the Bond producers.
@TheNews19904 жыл бұрын
Actually Timothy Dalton had scheduling issues in the late 80s, and then once they asked him in the 90s to reprise the roll he said he was done with acting... Then he went on to do small parts once in a blue moon like his roll in Hot Fuzz.

Not many people realize that there was 1 Bond film with an actor who portrayed Bond only once between Dalton & Brosnan films thanks to Dalton's scheduling issues.
@Nostalgianerd4 жыл бұрын
Brosan was booted out pretty much. That's very different from how it went down with Dalton, from what I can ascertain.
@boblowes4 жыл бұрын
@@TheNews1990 No there wasn't. The only actor to only play Bond once was George Lazenby, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He was intended to replace Sean Connery, who had left the role, as he was angry with Eon making tonnes of money from the movies, and felt he wasn't being paid enough. Them, there was a huge amount of press intrusion in Japan, during the shooting of You Only Live Twice and that tipped the balance for Connery. Brosnan was pipped to play James Bond very early on, as his then-wife had a minor role in For Your Eyes Only, and he was with her during location shooting. And of course, people noticed the ridiculously good looking, young Irish actor. Roger Moore was starting to think about leaving as it was, by then. But the producers felt that Brosnan was still a little young. As it happened, he was also tied down to a multi-year TV show contract, for Remington Steele. Roger Moore wa convinced to return for Octopussy and then A View to a Kill. At that point, Moore decided to hang up his tuxedo and holster, Remington Steele was cancelled and Pierce Brosnan was free to play James Bond going forward. He was announced as such and introduced to the press at a big Hollywood launch. However, the network that produced Remington Steele still had a two-year option on Brosnan, that if they decided to exercise, would mean he that they could force him back to work, playing Remington Steele. And that's what they did, deciding that having been announced as 007, Brosnan was a hot property - and one that they had first refusal on. Remington Steele went back into production, and Brosnan was forced to return to the show, or face a massive lawsuit and an injunction that would have prevented him from working while a court case was worked out. He had no choice. EON Productions were now without their new Bond. So, they looked through some of the names they had previously considered in the past, and decided upon Timothy Dalton. He was contracted to play Bond for three movies.Dalton's first two movies - The Living Daylights and License to Kill, were released in 1987 and 1989 respectively. He was expecting to do a 3rd movie, but MGM/United Artists (who owned half of the rights to the Bond movies) got into severe financial difficulty, which took years to sort out. It put any future bond films on hold until the mid 90s. EON asked Dalton to return, but he felt it was too long a gap since his last movie, and decided to move on. He was still paid for his contracted (but never made) third movie. EON found that Brosnan was now finally free to play 007, as had been planned, and got to work with GoldenEye. There is NO Bond film with one actor between License to Kill and GoldenEye. That's completely incorrect.
Fun Fact: "License To Kill" was initially named "License Revoked". The title was changed when a study showed that most American audiences didn't know what the word "Revoked" actually means.

I remember the whole PC and console scene in UK became very odd towards the end of the 80's/early 90's. You had kids that originally owned Spectrum 48k's, upgrading to second hand C64's, which were being sold by C64 owners upgrading to Commodore Amigas or Atari ST's. Then you had the kids who were getting C64's, Spectrum +2's or Amstrad 464's for the first time, because they were all dirt cheap due to the 16 Bit computers emerging. Then you had all those kids trading in their new 8-bits shortly afterwards, when they discovered how good their mate's 16 bit machines were. Then you had the 16 Bit computer owners being swayed by the 16 bit Megadrive and SNES consoles, so they were being sold off to the kids who wanted a cheap second hand Amiga or Atari ST. There were loads of those 8-bit "packs" late 80's, because the computer companies were simply trying to get rid of their stock of outdated technology. Bit of a con really, as they all knew the 8-Bits would be obsolete, and most kids would be buying 16-bits shortly afterwards. It was great for families with a low income though, as the 8-bits already had an amazing back catalogue of games, with most of them being sold as Budget re-releases. The amount of choice and variety of different hardware specs back then was staggering compared to the dull Sony/Microsoft/PC/Mac thing today.

The name "SPECTRE" was first used in the novel "Thunderball", on which the writer Kevin McClory sued Fleming, because he co-wrote the story with him as a film script (that wasn't used at the time) and Fleming used this script as the basis for his novel. Later McClory settled the case and gained the right to make his own movies based on that novel (he eventually made "Never Say Never Again" in the 80s). As a result of this court ruling, MGM lost their rights to any characters and elements first appearing in that novel and that included both SPECTRE and Blofeld. Sometime after 2008 (can't remember when) MGM bought back the rights to these elements and that's why they could make a new movie centered on SPECTRE and Blofeld in 2015.

If I remember correctly the Dragon 32 allowed for a feature to play tape audio in the game. I never had a title using that function, I only tried out some commands I found in the manual. That could be a much better way to add the in game audio while playing, and maybe just have an option to mute it and skip to the game, while the tape continue to next cue point.
@KuraIthys4 жыл бұрын
The Ataris had that functionality as well. I happen to have some tapes that use it. It was pretty rare though. Pretty much only educational titles used it. The one I've tested is called 'an introduction to programming'. I've seen the feature used to make perhaps the highest quality version of 'Bad Apple' ever seen on an 8 bit Microcomputer. It certainly couldn't have run back in the day, because it uses a tape + a 60 megabyte cartridge... But leaving aside the impossible cartridge, someone demonstrated it running on an unmodified Atari 400. There's so many things that could have been done with a feature like this, even accepting the limitation that it doesn't allow random access. (the Atari can control the tape motor from software, but not any other tape functionality). Could have been used for loading music. Ingame music in more linear games, the equivalent of simple cutscenes... You name it. - I mean, for all intents and purposes it's a more primitive and limited equivalent to CD audio... But... no. Pretty much went unused as a feature...

The audio tape is a fascinating touch. Brings to mind the rarely used feature that the Atari micros had. Atari tapes were actually stereo, but on the vast majority of tapes the left channel is blank. this is because the right audio channel has the data, while the left is an audio track that the computer plays directly. Combine this with the fact that the computer has software control over starting and stopping the tape motor, as well as the ability to use sync marks on the data section of the tape, and the computer can actually play tape audio in time to program specified prompts. It's finicky, but fascinating. In a way, it's a cruder and more limited form what we'd later see with games that have CD audio tracks... Would have worked really well with something like this... But, the Atari, owing to it's lack of popularity likely wouldn't have seen a pack like this. Given the era though, would have been funny to see an equivalent pack for an XEGS...

Even the "From Russia with Love" video game or the earlier "James Bond Junior" sub-franchise were forced to change the terrorist organisation's name (into "OCTOPUS" and "SCUM", respectively). Brilliant video! Dalton's Bond was closest to how Fleming wrote him, and it's a shame he didn't more than 2 films, but as you said circumstances beyond Dalton's control saw to that. I think they went with artwork from The Living Daylights rather than Licence to Kill, as that had been rated 15, and it probably wouldn't have been advisable to have tied that in at a game aimed at kids. 😛 I'm also surprised they were allowed to use SPECTRE in the game, as Kevin McClory owned the rights to that side of Bond, and Eon/MGM wouldn't get control of the SPECTRE related rights until 2013. Unless Domark found a loophole... 🤔 As for Spider instead of SPECTRE, as you say, there seems to have been a lot miscommunication between whoever did the script for the audio recording and the actual game programmers.

As a Bond aficionado, I've enjoyed the Dalton films and find them to be underrated but the plots of the movies are well... typical of late 1980s fad of every villain being a drug kingpin. Your synopsis of The Living Daylights film is spot on.

well, between the soviet union becoming weaker and weaker, them running out of Flemming material, and the AIDS epidemic making it less suitable for bond to sleep around, they had to change something. And drug kingpins chainsawing people apart helped make Dalton to be a more serious bond, to help washdown years of Moore camp.

I feel a little proud for my home country. :) The Bond games for the Speccy were actually developed by Novotrade in Hungary, and Orion is also a Hungarian brand.

I was a C64 guy in the 80s but would have loved to have had this and would have probably wet myself due to all the James Bond goodness which were my favourite movies at the time.

Looking at that Dixons catalogue, In 1990 the Spectrum cost more than the Mega drive. That just seems insane to me.

The Living Daylights was one of the short stories. It starts at the shooting range, then goes to the sniping scene outside the orchestral concert, which the movie pretty much copied verbatim. The story ends at the part where Bond says, "whoever she was, I must have scared the living daylights out of her."

I love Timothy Dalton too! Very underrated. I heard his films weren't as popular because they were a little too real? Like too Dark at the time? Especially license to kill, what with the drugs and the shark eating poor Felix. Oh but that opening chase sequence in the living daylights is probably my favorite of all time. parachuting out of the back of a truck mid air? bad ass
