This is only tangentially related, but my favorite extension of the bomberman formula is bomberman 2 for the DS (There's a game with the same name for the NES and in Japan the game was released with the name "custom battler bomberman"). It was never released in America, which is probably why I never see anyone mention the title, but it's a hidden gem imo. It takes the regular formula and augments it with armor that boosts your stats or gives you different abilities. Notable ones being a shield you can activate to protect yourself from a blast, or literal missles you can fling across the stage. I didn't get the chance to play many PvP matches back in the day but they are probably the most fun I've had playing bomberman. There's just a ton of different strategies and gear combos to try out.
@philcoast10312 жыл бұрын
That's one of my favorite Bomberman (and DS) games. The armor, stats, abilities and mission structure all are great additions, and don't clash with the traditional Bomberman game. Never got to play the multiplayer, but the campaign alone is fantastic. The OST is great, too, every now and then I give it a listen.
@theophilecaceres58552 жыл бұрын
Bomberman's sure is a weird franchise that many people only know for a few top-down bomb placing games and it's multiplayer, but for spin-offs, we have this, a game similar to Link's Awakening with Bomberman Quest, and even a short 2D platformer like Bomberman Pocket. Btw, Honey and Kotetsu appears on Bomberman Wars as Secret Battles, both characters being both recurring characters in the Bomberman series (Honey only appears on Bombergirl, Kotetsu being stuck since Party Edition on PS1 :x)

Always rad to see Bomberman games get a thorough examination like this, I love this series so much if there was any series i could contribute to ever it'd be Bomberman no doubt, its done so much yet is so niche and underexplored i feel like it can be more than what Konami currently uses it as. Wonderful Job too here I want to play this again now
@lyuanfranco78422 жыл бұрын
(Sorry my bad english)the weirdest thing about bomber girl is that its respect the series alot more than super bomberman R(a lot of the characters are from obscure bomberman media, various homages to the games and they even make a character inspired by the white bomber from bomberman jetters(that weird bomberman anime) and called the original actress that voiced him(yes he was voiced by a girl)to voice his girl version, you can see so much love for the IP in the game that baffles me that konami just ignores all the series they posses and made bomber man R so shallow in comparisson)

Came here after your SM64DS video hinted at this video not doing well; just wanted to say this video is really well put-together, and I love it when people cover more obscure games, especially from the PS1/Saturn era, when the industry as a whole was going through it's whole wild west phase. Might slap the fan-translation on my hacked 3DS and play through the game myself some time. As another creator online (under a different alias), I can kinda relate to original/obscure stuff you're passionate about tanking compared to works that cover more mainstream series (especially if its a source of income). Don't give up on covering these sorts of games, though, I'd love to see more.

The Thief wasn't mentioned in the unit explanation section. I was wondering about this one the most (well, second most after the cleric, in a game of 1-hit kills the role of cleric had to be the most non-traditional one) because it didn't seem like in this game units hold any items that thieves could steal like in typical SRPGs.

Bomberman really has done everything, I would dare to say, that he may rival Mario in spinoffs in quantity and quality (comparing to other IPs). Too bad that Bomberman never really exploded (ahhhh) in popularity. Maybe the slow and more thoughtful gameplay isn't for everybody, which is a shame. Many companies have been trying to replicate the Bomberman formula, but weirdly enough, Bomberman design seems to fit so perfectly with the gameplay, that it is difficult to imagine anything else. We can only hope for some good spiritual successor... I wish...
