These are great pens, I know a lot of seamstresses use then for marking as the iron takes the ink right off. Never thought to use it with watercolor.

This actually looks really cool!! 😮 I thought it was going to be one of those awful pens with the ‘eraser’ on the end that tears that paper, but no… it uses heat and actually works 😍

The ‘eraser’ on these is a piece of squishy probably plastic. The idea is to rub it over what you want to erase until friction does its magic and the ink disappears. For those times when you don’t have a heat gun or blow drier. (Imagining that in a doctor’s office and giggling.)

It is one of those pens 🙂. The friction from the "rubber" eraser creates heat and that is what erases the ink. Though, a lot of papers don't handle the friction part all to well. Try your pens with a hair drier or heat gun, should work as well or better than the eraser 😊.

Now the ultimate test. Put the art on the freezer and see if the ink returns. That with the intention to test how well this hack will hold on cold weather.

Hadn't thought about that - but a week after completing this project the ink hasn't re-appeared. I haven't tested it in freezing tempts - but our air-con vent out this past week and had the house at a cool 50 degrees Fahrenheit. No lines have re-appeared in the painting thus far 😄

I looked it up online, and it looks like the ink does reappear at below freezing temperatures.

I was thinking about this too. Like if I use it in an original and ship it somewhere and it goes below freezing on the way.....

I have been using those pens forever. The ink does reappear if you freeze it. Leaving a notebook in my backpack in Canada weather would sometimes make it reappear ... but you can always erase it again with heat. Just a normal house temperature would not make it reappear

That's really cool. Only downside is that themis kind of ink reappears over time and low temperature. Just put it in freezer in - 10°C.

I've had these pens for a couple of years but never thought to use them for art! I use them to take notes in meetings for my reports. That heat tool thought - who knew????? Thanks for posting this!

Like many others in the comments, I was thinking about the cooling aspects of these pens. I've never tried it myself but know that you can make the ink reappear but cooling it in the freezer for example. A bit curious how the watercolor affects this. If you use the pen for an original and send it off to a buyer and the temp on the way goes below freezing. Will the lines have reappeared when the painting reaches the buyer? 🤔 Very interesting to see your experiment! Have frixion pens but never thought to use them with watercolor. Yeah it’s interesting to experiment - I put a painting in the freezer to see what happens. I am sure to see if the heat gun as hot as it is will change that or not - will see

Those have been the only pens I've purchased for over a decade. I loved them for taking very neat notes in college. Sadly I didn't know the ink dissapears with heat & left my notebook & pens in my car overnight on a hot Kansas summer day. All of my notes totally disappeared & made the pens unable. They're still my favorite pens,, but I'm more mindful of where I store my pens & don't take a chance on using them on projects I want to be archival. Like I'd never use them in my diary.

Did you try too cool them afterwards? I don't know about the pens but some say that by putting your notes in the freezer you can get all the writing back.

@@dyerswoad7088 Yes, I tried everything especially as I had a test coming up. I couldn't get my notes back or my pens to work but at least I still did well in the test. They do work well when you want ink to dissapear permanently though, like if you're marking a sewing pattern or accidentally get ink on a clothing. I'm really curious to see what would happen if I were to write a letter & send it through the postal service though.

I wonder if the heat from the gun can alter the characteristics of the watercolors, such as lightfasteness…

No, the heat gun is used all the time; it’s a normal part of watercolor painting to speed the drying process. It just works that the pen disappears with the heat gun. Lightfastness happens if the paints used are lightfast.

Also lightfastness isn’t impacted by the heat gun but rather by long periods of being in the sun. Really depends on the manufacturer which they are required and will tell you.

I actually own these pens. Who knew they were so fancy. So I tried it. My hair dryer removed the ink. Came back 15 minutes later and part of the ink returned. Hummm. More experimenting needs to happen.

Yeah mine haven’t come back yet. But I’m using a heat gun; vs a hair dryer so that might be the issue. I was curious so I googled it and a heat gun does at least 390 degrees F; whereas a hair dryer can only reach 140 degrees. Try that out :)
