As a chemistry student, while he has my sympathies, he pretty much has it coming since one of the most basic rules of lab safety is never bring any foodstuff inside the lab and, even if what you made is edible, DO NOT eat anything from the lab unless the lab is rated food-safe! (Artificial flavorings and colourings are made in labs after all.) Contamination is a thing and most of the time you'll be mixing and moving stuff in the lab; there will always be a chance of a mix-up when you are careless.

You kinda got it backwards. Those powder are made from Citric acid. Citric acid are a natural compound in citric fruits. Basically, It is what makes sour fruits taste sour. If something is labeled as citric acid, then it is in its close to purest form.

You can drink citric acid, it's commonly used as a food ingredient in candies or other fruit-flavored things, and it makes a lemonade-like drink. Can't put too much of the powder in though, it gives you horrible diarrhea.
