That time we said CHEERS! to aliens in 1983 (and other SETI messages to extraterrestrials) | ASMR

In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celebrated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair.
In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment.
40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. Thanks so much for watching.

Although I have a feeling that if they're ever discovered alot of people would want them dead/gone as it seems people have a disliking for things they dont understand. Im still not sure about the idea of that. I think earth had so many "perfect and lucky" events that created life that could evolve long enough. I know that the idea of us being alone is like maybe narcisistic just like how they thought the universe spinned around us back then but I think you need so many perfect scenarios to line up precisely to make life like ours. maybe microscopical life would be more abundant. But yea since the time frames of life existing are so small on the universal timeline and because of the vast distances we maybe never know. I do hope there is more life out there.

However, in an ever expanding universe, there has to be another form of an advanced civilization, it is probably vastly diffrent to our idea of "aliens" and just overall diffrent from us, but im almost certain there are other types of living things out there.

It's awesome to know that I'm not the only one who feels inspired by Rich. I love astronomy and ASMR. This is my favorite ASMR channel, by far. I feel comfortable after work, watching this and I end up enjoying the feeling by staying up late and watching and exploring astronomy, relativity, reading about famous astronomers and all that, etc.

Whenever I go star gazing and look up at the nights sky, there’s not a single doubt in my mind about there being other “intelligent life” out there. The age and the size of the universe is almost impossible for humans to comprehend, after all humans have only been around for 300000 years or so. I just wanna say that it’s been fun watching your channel throughout the years so far! I started watching about 5 years ago. I had to switch KZbin accounts during that period, but I remember that one of the first videos I watched which was pretty newly released at that time was: “ASMR | Science and History of Black holes…” I used your channel as background sound while copying down notes.
