Never read anything by Montaigne but this little bit here makes me want to look further into his philosophical works. Awesome essay! Thanks for the upload and for broadening my philosophical outlook.

Montaigne was very well read. The arguments against fearing death come from Lucretius.

The death in its pure form is no problem. It is nothing and nothing to worry about. "The birds will sing and you will not hear them", let them sing, I don't care a pin. The problem is not the death but dying - painful, stressful, boring, expensive.

+Stanislaw Hrouste Oxygen/Helium tank and a weighted dive suit. Swim out far, sink to the bottom, slowly lower the amount of oxygen, replacing it with helium. You'll faint before it runs out, dying in this state underwater.

There are many ways to die that are instantaneous. It’s a shame that in hospitals they try to keep people alive beyond all sense and dignity. I agree with the traditional eastern view of suicide. It is an honorable thing to bring one’s life to an end at the right time.

If you like this you may enjoy Emil Cioran. Another cheerful fellow.

Cioran is more of prose and poetry, but his abstract is definitely out of this world
