The amulet glows and pulls Rowan forward. It enters the five pointed hole on its own. The door makes an unlocking sound. Then suddenly swings open hitting Rowan in the face. It breaks the chain around his neck and the amulet remains in the door. Rowan takes 5 points of bludgeoning damage.

Never played D&D. Can the DM give the players hints on what to do?
@devo4ka_soso4ka
@devo4ka_soso4ka 2 ай бұрын
@@rodjjt7742 They kinda can, but it goes against immersion. DM comes up with the world state, npc behavior and actions, and the challenges. Their job it to make it all look authentic, as if this is a real world that is living separately from players intervention, like when they are not here, things keep happening. It also means the world should have a history, and this history should be misterious and interesting and set in stone, it already happened and without altering time itself there is nothing that can be done about it. So, the players gather around the table to participate in a unique world they only know the basics of, acting through their characters as a proxy, and they find out that the world, being a good and not a bland one, does have its own misteries and challenges, like sometimes even if some events fall into one line as if orchestrated by fate, there is uncertainty of what to do, and endless amount of things to try. Players are supposed to be trying things, and sometimes when they've been playing for a while, they may have already gathered enough information and knowledge to draw a very simple conclusion. Drawing it is not actually a difficult job, noone requires their players to be nuclear scientists, but it needs to be done so that players feel like THEY did it. They were working for it in game, and they earned it, and it is their accomplishment. Now imagine that instead of this DM is constantly trying to tell them what they should do. Would it even be interesting in the first place?

It happened to me a few times. Our "less perceptive" player never undersood what to do. Even when it was so obvious! I took so many attemtps to do anything, we were starting to get tired. So I decided to create puzzles which didn't need his skills. His role endend being important during the fights (he was avobe average on this) and we started enjoying the adventure more. Sometimes, you need to read the players and find the spot for each one.
