While the sizing doesn't quite work for 1940's, the silhouette and colors does give me fun 1960's vibes! With some different styling it could work. I also recently had the wonderful experience of joining a million squares for a blanket (on a deadline!), so I feel your pain acutely.

You'll get there, I'd suggest staring with a really simple pattern for a jumper all in one colour then gradually learn more advanced stitches. If you're unsure of a stitch then knit a little swatch for it :)

Claude you can use a tiny crochet hook instead of tapestry needle to “sew” seams using short yarn ends when you are playing yarn chicken when you are sewing up/ weaving it in. Additionally as disabled knitter you might ditch the long straight needles and just use circular needles. I find that long straights just make me too tired. I alternate styles of knitting and knitting projects to cope with fatigue/ brain fog etc. when I was much healthier I could do different styles of long straight knitting like Irish cottage/ lever, Yorkshire swaving and Scottish belt knitting. Have you considered using a Scottish knitting belt to help hold you needle and thus help with tiredness and arm strength issues using long straights. I knit a combo of styles but I am mainly classed as an irish cottage/English knitting but not the slow English where the stop and pick up the yarn. I throw the yarn but I also knit Spanish/Portuguese /Greek along with continental in my mixed of styles that includes backwards ie left needle on to right while holding yarn on right (or reverse of that) or using a yarn pin. I was originally taught as a child the Irish/English growing style. Mrs Smith in this film kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXqpp6mtqLeHeaM is a great auntie. I was born in 1971 and I am still a member of the CWA - Country Women’s Association even though I have lived in the UK for last 20+ years. Yes I am from the Northern Territory. Even though I lived in the Top End in the tropics I was taught to knit when visiting paternal Grandparents in the Alice -Alice Springs starting at 4. I was a competent knitter at 6 years of age. Culturally my paternal family is Irish/Yorkshire/Basque/Catalon. My Paternal gran was a CWA member of 70+ years. My maternal family is Shetland/ Hebredies/ Irish knitters. Your sweater is cute and probably fits the way most fit people who weren't posing for a photo shoot. The sweaters made and shot for your pattern, might not have actually been made from whatever yarn was lying around and the sweaters may have been clothes-pinned at the back to make the fit look more exact. Great job at stash busting and a fun loose-fitting pullover to wear.

Creating is always such a gamble, and seems to need any number of iterations to get it right! There are so many variables that have to come together to call it a success! The patchwork looks great! Maybe one of these days you will have the umph to take it in. But, congratulations on using up the yarn! When I don't like how something fits me, I consider donating it to a thrift shop, hoping it will suit someone else. ❤

"For the enjoyment of the process" is always a valid reason to knit. And if its donated, gifted or sold, someone else will enjoy the product. I think the shape would match the original with shoulder pads but without them, it still matches the spirit of it - 4 and a half more, yay! It does look nice on you, but if the fit feels off then its not as enjoyable to wear imo.

I mostly like it but it would fit better if there were squares of a denser stitch. I think the lace gives too much. I really like the use it up style and I would likely wear it too. Oh it definately needs shoulder pads !

What a fun project. i cast this on last week, thank you for the idea. I'm using all shades of green from my stash-4 shades total. I sewed all the panels together with invisible thread & left my live stitchse on waste yarn so that i could just collect them onto a needle to knit the top yoke. I think the sweater looks lovely but if the fit bothers you then you could try taking the sides in on your sewing machine and cutting off the excess. I’ve done that with store bought sweaters before 😊

Totally enjoyed your video ;) thanks for sharing! A tip I realized when I have a short length of yarn when sewing up .... are you sitting down lol, so easy ;) just when everything is ready and your ready to thread the needle, stop, without threading, use your needle place it through each side (as if the thread is on the needle), once your needle is through one stitch or loop from each side, then slide the short piece of yarn through the needle and pull through ... ta dahh lol, it was a eureka moment for me when the first time I realized this, with having one or two more to close and a little piece of yarn left ;) Sunshine

It turned out so cute! It definitely needs the shoulder pads, and could you not take in the sides (I'd hate to suggest making those side panels smaller, but maybe...?) a bit so it would fit better? I'd be so sad to put that much effort into a sweater and not want to wear it. One of those options seems the easiest way to make it more wearable, while giving the 40s vibes you want. Oooh, another possibility I've seen other knitters/crocheters use is adding some elastic threads I to the work. This has always been in, say, ribbed edges that have become too large (or were just too big to begin with), but maybe that would be something that would make the fit better...?

A few tips for seaming for folks who want to make similar projects: use smoothed down toothpicks or double ended needles to keep the two sides from moving about; leave long tails (about 20 cm or 8 inches usually works well) so you have enough to weave in as well, after seaming; get a short and a curved tapestry needle, they are handy for short ends. As for yours, I think it turned out well, even if it's big on you. Gauge is important and they did mention it (28 sts per 10 cm).

Personally I would have knit it Intarsia, that way I don't have to seam (I don't like that at all!), and you can do with a little less yarn, because you don't need yarn for seaming, you just cross the yarns. I totally understand you choose a seamless pattern for your next project 🌞🌞 Shoulder pads will make it a bit better, and maybe knit the side panels again, with some decreases for bodyshape? Well, at least you used some stash yarn, that is great for counting!

I see two methods there: either darts or re-knitting them (although that would decrease some of the stash-busting value, but longer sleeves might sort that, so... balance?)

The 1940s silhouette really isn't for me, but I do really like the colors and it's a lovely sweater. I like slightly looser fitting garments so I didn't think there was anything wrong with the fit, but compared to the pattern image it definitely is not quite right. On its own it's a beautiful piece, but as a recreation I can definitely see how it would be frustrating! Piece-y garments are always tricky because even with gauge swatches I always end up trying on whatever I'm making every few inches to make sure it fits how I want.

I used the same joining method when I did my (brown) harry styles-type cardigan and there was something satisfying about the little tails meeting in the middle on the back of each block and wasting as little yarn as possible

Claude, I agree that it's to big on your small frame. I like the concept of the patchwork but a tighter gauge might look a bit nicer, although I hate seaming up process. Sorry to see you looking so poorly. Wish I had a magic wand to make you feel better. I so look forward to your next video. I'm a big 40s fan. Right now I'm knitting a 40s jumper called "Maureen"dk version from squidknits. It's a good experience since it make you do all the math and calculations from my measurements to get jumper to fit.

it'd be a lot of work to re-sew the whole jumper together, but i wonder would it be worth taking out one of the patchwork panels on either the front or back, just to make the jumper more fitted? obviously up to you if you can be bothered doing it; but i think it's such a nice jumper and you've put so much work into making it a whole garment, it'd be a shame to not wear it if you enjoy the way it looks when properly fitted either way, very interesting video!! i love seeing twists on trends like this, it was very cool!!

How about layered over a short sleeve mock neck turtleneck? With shoulder pads and tucked in to high waist trousers, or belted at the waist might disguise some of the extra ease? I think it is cute slightly oversized, and it turned out well.

I'm actually working on on the Andersen, Harry Styles sweater for my daughter right now. The instructions are horrible and I'm a long time knitter! Finally figured them out. Beautifully made, as always! Sorry you had a rough patch this past month. Shoulder pads and steam blocking may fix the fit issues. If it’s still too large, perhaps you can ask a knitting friend to resew the side panels to take them in a bit.

In the past, I’ve been ruthless with taking in the seams on vintage knitting that turned out too large. Astonishingly, the material on the inside didn’t add significant bulk to the finished garment.

A cute garment despite your disappointment. I really appreciate the staying true to the vintage pattern. It gives a more realistic understanding of what the process might be though it was absolute wisdom to join your strips first and cadt on the yoke from there - so much neater. I know it would be a pain but could you remove the side panels and gather up the sleeve head to take up the excess sleeve amount? Or just not worth the fuss? You didn't seem all that enamoured by the overall colour and pattern.

I'm of the same mind-set. I've done a blanket in what-I-didn't-know-at-the-time-was-intarsia. Heh. Story: my SIL gave me a great big box of various yarns shortly after I learned to knit. I remembered her taking part in a discussion where several of us were carping about how lap blankets never fit us (we're all rather tall). So I decided to make her a patchwork blanket that would actually be a good "cuddle up on the couch" size. I truly hate seaming up knits, so the idea of making all those squares & then sewing them together was a complete no-go. I learned the hard way that US moss, garter, and seed stitches do not actually end up the same size. But I made it work after a bit of judicious tinking & re-knitting. And my SIL loved it. So, WIN! (Also, I deviated again from the original by picking up stitches around the completed blanket & knitting the edge in one piece -- new skills unlocked: mitered corners, folding your knitting, & joining that folded-over knitting to the picked up bit without any sewing At All! Quite proud of myself for that.)

I think this one is neat conceptually. The sizing is certainly too big, though the original image does seem to have shoulder pads added to it, which might change the fit slightly, but not help with the sides. I would just sew (zigzag) the sides in a bit. And I don't think this would be against "vintage rules" as I was surprised to read the "to complete" instructions for the vintage pattern that I recently made (best way 2085) "The seams can be sewn by machine, or with back-stitch by hand."

I think this calls for some sweater surgery. I would use my sewing machine to take in the sides. You can make seams down the middle of the side panels to take in the sweater. I would do it in a contrasting thread in a wide stitch without cutting it at first to see how it looked. If it looked better, I'd use a thread that blends into the blue and then cut off the excess fabric from the seam.

The idea of it is very nice. Sad that the fit is not what you had in mind. I'm sure you don't want to unpick and redo any part. But you could make the side panels more narrow or triangle shaped (so it doesn't mess up the armhole) to make it more fitted at the waist.

As always, I love your video. Im working on a cotten baby spring weight blanket. My heath stinks just now so i needed something so simple. Just 5 stich wide blocks of knit, then purl. I know there is a name for this pattern. Can i remember? Ha! I havent worked much in cotton. Has anyone made a summer sweater (jumper to you across the sea) with cotton yarn? Like, dislike, problems? Its hot here now in the summers and i need some clothes!

I've made a few things in cotton and they don't stretch or recover in the same way wool does. So you want something with positive ease that will drape rather than anything too snug 💚

Could you hot wash it or dunk in hot water to shrink a little then set it over a dress form to shape it a little better for your frame/figure? I dont know what kind of yarn you were able to use, so I dont know if it would work or not 🤷‍♀️
