Hello Wyllow [ Wyllow Wisp ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome BACK to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). THIS is why Floor Jansen is the Valkyrie Goddess, and we who worship her would absolutely follow her into war at her command - but she would never issue such a command, being a lovely person and natural empath. This concert is legendary, it was the first time that a European crowd had seen and heard her as a part of Nightwish (although many in the crowd were familiar with her from her previous bands.) Wacken is a cow town in Northern Germany (Hence the longhorn logo.) During the Wacken Open Air festival , it attracts crowds of 80K+ metalheads. This concert was on the eve of Floor and Englishman Troy Donockley being offered permanent places in the band. Now Floor has 2 kids with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (In his day job he is the drummer for history nerds/metalheads Sabaton) The composer of these masterpieces is the Metal Mozart, Tuomas Holopainen. ALWAYS choose live over prerecorded. The energy that these pros bring is always unbelievable!

She's great, isn't she? I've been a fan of her voice since a dear friend introduced me to After Forever, her first band, starting when she was 16. I've seen After Forever live about 4 times. Leaden Legacy was my favorite song. I think it's great she ended up with Nightwish. During a tour After Forever was the support act of Nightwish. Floors voice is so versitile, she can even growl! If you want to experience that I reccommend 'Yours is an empty hope', live of course :).

Floor was officially still only a temporary stand in singer for this performance though she became their official singer immediately after this concert. Every song on the set list had been written for and recorded by a previous singer, so the studio versions are different to the live versions. In general, Nightwish are better live than in the studio. They do play against a backing orchestral track, as it tends to be a little expensive to bring an orchestra and a choir on tour with you. This was the London Symphony Orchestra playing though, so not too shabby.

This is an old NW song originally sung by their first singer. Floor Jansen is their third singer. She was the replacement for the second and not a full band member at this concert. When we bought our tickets (WOA sells out a year in advance) the second singer was listed. Floor was the fill-in hired back in Oct 2012 to finish the tour. After doing that, the band felt like they wanted her and Troy (not seen here - he plays whistles, pipes, and guitar like instruments and also sings). The drummer had to be replaced after this concert for medical reasons, but still works for the band behind the scenes. The bass player here who sings in other songs, has left and was replaced with a non-singing bass player. The band took a break from touring as Floor was getting *VERY* pregnant and everybody took time to work on side projects. Lucy (Floors second daughter) was born and has had some time with mommy. Floor recorded the new album vocals at her house studio. They had allocated six weeks - she completed it in six days. Floor had been practicing the songs for a good amount of time while on tour before.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZbin. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZbin in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 8 years next march) and Lucy (1 year this october),a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Nice reaction. Nightwish are the best band you never heard of. They are getting a bigger following due to reaction videos such as yours, and it’s a shame because now they are getting more worldwide exposure they have taken a break from touring. I have seen them live at Wembley Arena and they were awesome. They are definitely better live. If you like shorter songs then react to Storytime from the same concert. I never see anyone pointing out that one of the reasons the crowd increasingly ROARS on her final high pitch is that the original song just hasn't that part, not the studio version, nor the previous live performances (except one in the USA which is I believe the first with Floor). So the majority of the public didn't know it was coming to that, and the effect was everybody wowing their brain out 😂

It's not the most viewed clip, but it is the video with the most reaction videos on KZbin. The studio version has a different singer and a different ending. The torus thing is the logo of the German Wacken Open Air. It is one of the oldest and largest metal festivals in the world, with 85,000 visitors. Another 15,000 visit the village of Wacken. The lyrics of this song are quite complex and almost impossible to attempt to interpret at a first listen, so don't panic if you don't get them. The song and lyrics were written by the keyboard player, Tuomas, who often refers to himself in his lyrics as 'Ocean born' or 'Dead boy' (he studied in oceanography and feels that when he grew up he lost his inner child). The child that will be born again, is his youth. This is a love song, but it is not that he is in love with a ghost, it is the feelings of love that is dying.

Personally I like the live versions a lot for Nightwish, especially the songs where Floor is the singer...not saying the studio versions are bad, it's just that they're one of those bands that do really well live. If you're into doing more Nightwish reactions, any of the songs in this concert are good. My personal favorite is Song of Myself. Be sure to find the correct speed version though.
