Hello MommaOG [ @TheRealMommaOG ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). She has technical capabilities that border on the super-human. Instant color changes, and style shifts. Stunning control and intonation. Being able to belt so high it seems scarcely possible. Her real 'mutant ability' on top of that is the way she emotes, and connects with what she's singing like I've only seen from a few other vocalists. No exaggeration, one of the best I've ever heard.

This is Floor Jansen, the third lead singer of Nightwish. Floor is Dutch but lives in Sweden with her husband who is the drummer of Swedish Metal band Sabaton. When Nightwish 's second singer got sick while on tour in the US the band called Floor, whom they knew from festivals they had shared, and asked her if she could come to the States and learn their setlist in 48 hours. She came and never left. Apart from Nightwish there is a massive Floor Jansen rabbit hole to discover. As for classical music look for her singing O Mio Babbino Caro or the Vilja Lied. Also impressive is her Phantom of the Opera duet with Henk Poort (Dutch Opera singer turned musical star, who actually starred in the Dutch Phantom), her collaboration with Epica on Sancta Terra, her covid quarentine covers of Alone and Let It Go, and her work with Ayreon, especially Valley of the Queens and Everybody Dies (both from the Ayreon Universe concert). Prepare to be amazed 😉😀

welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive). this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream" this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZbin. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZbin in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 8 years next march) and Lucy (1 year this october),a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Others have covered much of the info about the band and their members but one additional bit of information I would like to share is that the organ like keyboard stand is inspired by the Sibelius Monument in Helsnki, Finland. Jean Sibelius is one of the most famous Finnish classical composers and Nightwish's main composer, Tuomas Holopainen, is a big fan of his work. Having this keyboard stand was a small tribute to a Finnish musical legend. It also has a built in wine holder for Tuomas as he is a big red wine fan. You will see him occasionally pull out the bottle for a swig during concerts.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). Hello there, greetings from UK Thank you for reacting to my favourite band "Holy Shit!" is a usual and perfectly acceptable response to hearing this group for the first time 😂 The orchestral music is all composed by Tuomas (the keyboardist) but played by The London Philharmonic Orchestra. As you might imagine it would be too costly and difficult to have a whole orchestra and choir go on tour with a band so the orchestral music and choirs are played through a backing track, and also through MIDI on the keyboard. This is how they achieve their full, rich symphonic sound Each and every person in this band are masters at what they do, and Floor is one of the most versatile singers in the world

The orchestra and choir you hear are recordings that Nightwish (Tuomas) did with the London Philharmonic which they use on the albums. So those parts play on a backing track as it would be infinitely more expensive to bring a whole orchestra and choir with them on tour. This is the current singer Floor Jansen (who's Dutch) and she joined the band during this tour to replace the previous singer. Technically she wasn't an official part of the band at this show yet but they made it official soon after. And yes, she can also sing Opera. You can safely follow Gabriel's advice on what to play next :)

Welcome. You've come upon the best band I've found in 30 years. I'm 73, grew up with the music of the 70s. Nightwish was such a huge surprise when I found them about 6-7 years ago. They are one of the few bands that are best live. This entire Wachen 2103 set is as good as what you just heard. From there, Wembley and Tempere in 2015 and Buenos Aries in 2018. No two songs are alike, the band doesn't over play anything, they play what the song needs but they do exceptionally well. The keyboard player Tuomas is a brilliant writer and arranger. His music well make you think from the Big Bang to Enter Sandman. He writes of fairy tales, man's place anywhere, love, loss, sea shanties, you name it. This band will leave your chin on your chest and a huge smile on your face. Get ready for what could be the best rabbit hole you ever go down. I see Gabriel has commented already. He' has alot a good info and a list of songs for you. I hope you find Nightwish to your liking, there are alot of fans out here in the Nightwish Army who will follow along with you as you discover what is ahead. Enjoy every second.

Yes, discovering wacken gls 'floored' me, two years ago at the age of 68. I have been subsequently 'floored' by Andra Ariadna's cover of sleeping sun. If you love nightwish, sound out Andra, especially her NW covers.

Now song called Poet and the Pendulum is. Amazing but you need to do research before that song so you understand the reason that song was written to begin with. Greatest show on Earth is band's most longest song at over 21 minutes. It tells about creating of earth, and everything after that. I hope you enjoy the ride. ❤

This is one of 'those' performances where you stumble across it and it just floors (pun intended :D) you. There is some emotional magic in Floor's voice that just reaches into your heart when you hear her - I have watched this performance of Ghost Love Score I don't know how many times and every time there are certain points where this grizzled old Englishman has tears in his eyes from the ineffable beauty and power of it all. I am sure some part of that is that I wish my wife had lived to hear it; she would have loved it but she passed away six months before this miracle of a concert took place in Wacken. Another of theirs that does the same thing is "The Greatest Show on Earth". There is, inevitably, some discourse of which live version is the best - for me I like the London one because it has the actual Richard Dawkins in the mix but many like the Tampere one.

Good one. It's all excellent. Live is best, follow the list below or just do your'e own thing from it. Floor is tall about 6'1'' the Wacken 2013 show is where she was introduced as the new singer to the European audience. Try Story Time, Song Of Myself, Ghost River, Romanticide etc same show.

I think you'd really like My Walden (live at Tampere is a good version) as I think you've said you liked folky music. Not the way most reactors are steered, but I think you'd like that or maybe Sleeping Sun (with Floor in 2016?) as a gentle ballad written for an eclipse. This band is incredibly versatile so I'd be astonished if you didn't find something to love.

Glad you discovered this Band and this amazing performance just like I did a year ago...This is not the kind of music I listen to, but now, I can't say how many times I've watched this video....you should definitely watch Storytime, Ever dream, both from the same concert, and the beautiful Sleeping Sun (you will see that there's a version with Tarja, the "original" singer, and some with Floor....you may check both, but personally, I have a soft spot for Floor's performance. There are many other songs to discover from them, and I trust specialists to guide you ;) thanks for the reaction and take care.

They definitely have songs you can listen to, while doing some stuff around your house. I listened to their newest studio album Yesterwynde about 50-100 times in its entirety, while riding my bicycle or driving my car for an hour or two. The singer and the whole band is as versatile as it gets and you can choose between a huge variety of their compositions. Needless to mention that they don't disappoint when playing live on stage as the live-atmosphere makes it superior to any studio recording.

Great react! I found these guys while following a rabbithole on Liliac. I have a tendancy to listen to covers while doing art. Fresh versions but familar territory so it's not a distraction while I work.. Wound me up first as a Liliac fan, then as a Nightwish fan. Tarja's version of Phantom of the Opera popped up while I was chasing Liliac songs. I had to listen. Best version of Phantom ever recorded - full stop. So that would be recommend number one. Number two would be Storytime from this same concert. Understand, Floor Jansen had 48 hours to learn the setlist before taking over as a mid tour replacement. Months later they recorded this live and she still wasn't as yet hired on a permanent basis. This concert is a tour de force. Her transformation of the sound became more and more impressive as I listened to original versions of the cuts. Floor is a phenomenon. And this is lightning in a bottle. Imo it has all the magic of Queen at Live aid. Live aid was 72,000 in attendance. This performance was 82,000 in attendance. And this is just stunning. Tuomas, the keyboardist is also the composer/writer. I called him the Modern Mozart because he writes like a classical composer but uses modern instruments. You can hear the changeups in the song as it progresses from one movement to the next - like a classical piece. And like cinema, there is the intermission. The guy is next level. I still don't know a lot about them all; but, I'm hooked on the talent. I think they would be bigger and more well known if they were produced like bands in America. I don't think that's what the band wants. They want to do art and make money, not make money and maybe do art occasionally. And that is the same thing that sold me on Liliac. They don't write for the radio. They write to tell a story. They are indie and are known for saying they'd like to be popularly known; but, don't care so much about fame. They don't want the interference and master/slave relationship that goes with being on a label. At any rate, thank you. And Cheers!!!

Nightwish Army Washington state US reporting in. Every song is meaningful. Tuomas is an incredible composer. There are two documentaries about the making of their albums they made for Endless Forms Most Beautiful and Yesterwynde on their official channel. Great way to learn about the band members.

Floor Jansen, the lead singer is Dutch and has 3 years training in the Rock academy + 3 years in the conservatory, of which 1 year of Opera and 2 year of Musical Theatre. At the time of this concert Floor had just be hired as their new lead singer (they asked her that day), after having been the standin for 10 months before that, because their previous lead singer Anette Olzon had dropped out in the middle of their World Tour. The orchestral tapes where played by the London Philharmonic, and arranged by the London Philharmonic's arranger who is a personal friend of Tuomas Holopainen. But of course it is financially not feasible to take the London Philharmonic on tour with you. So they rather use the taped recordings of the LPh than a cheaper stand in orchestra that offers much less quality at much higher cost.
