It's not bad for the audience, either. It's the type of scene necessary to understand the character to relate to him. You, as an actor, need to make it human -- it's not the Presidency or his political career, though that will end, too--but disappointing his friend, his worst habits exposed for all to see in the public square, and all I can think is about is Jenny -- "Not more important than your marriage!" "Right now, yes, this is more important than my marriage..." "Pills." When he's telling the story, it's the end, and he is as close to crazy as I've ever seen him. If there was ever a moment for a drink....it's when he gets back to the office, alone, crying that you exposed yourself to someone you care about, for no reason--experienced the high with no catharsis--and Jed knew it. That man was headed for a bender.

My view: At the end of a long day of hearings where he was to be held up to public scrutiny and shame about his alcoholism (which would call into doubt years of service in various parts of the government), he comes back to the office. All day long he was on high alert. Anxiety is exhausting. And he comes home to be greeted by his best friend, the President. And he gives him this gift, this memento of trust, loyalty, and faith in the other. To receive such a gift of love after a day like that...

This scene for me is a good insight into the exchange of sentiment between men in our world. When Star Trek came out, kids raced into the sciences to become doctors and engineers because they're heroes showed them what they could do. DeForest Kelley couldn't afford his dream of being a doctor, but got to play one on TV, and got letters from viewers who fulfilled his dream on his behalf after being inspired by the show. He said it made it all worth it. I wonder if the actors here felt even a granule of hope for even local government, or activism, or just running a proper house; that the viewers took to heart what they saw here. The medical field didn't change much besides an influx of workers, and I doubt the political scene would or has either as far as its running goes...But I wonder if the actors gave this any thought when they walked off the set, especially for the last time.
