They didn't raise the bar too high, the judges and grading scale ruined it. 50s and 40+ scores are way to lenient and free. AG was robbed because of the contests lack of structure. The contest isn't bad because of AGs incredible feats and creativity (or Zach Lavine even though he did the same dunk MJ, Brent Barry, etc. have all done), it's bad because of the lack of structure and lack of will from the players to put in effort like an AG, Javale McGee, Dwight Howard, Jason Richardson, Kobe, MJ, etc.

I was really blown away by what he said. And the best part is the unknown guys will be paired with the players (hopefully top guys, Lebron, Curry, Giannis, Zach etc) to make the audience feel attached to the unknowns. Fantastic idea. Hopefully they go through with this.

This was one of the few times that I have ever agreed with Stephen A. Smith. I have seen better dunks out on the streets than this year's NBA contest. Here's a thought. The NBA should invite the world's best dunkers and challenge these NBA players. Once they see how good these non-NBA players are, perhaps guys like Ja Morant and LeBron will more motivated to participate.

Yea...those street-dunkers are basically Ja Morant, except without NBA-level handles and perhaps shooting ability. NBA players are not incentivised to perform at the Dunk contest, when they had to prep the dunks and risk busting up their legs during the landing. During gametime, they are red hot and sweating, joints are well warmed up and ready to go. During the dunk contest, they are just wearing warm-ups...

Stephen A Smith is onto something here... With the stars of the NBA ever increasingly reluctant to throw their hats into the Slam Dunk competition, we need specialists and these specialists don't make it into the NBA... So I full heartedly agree with Stephen A Smith here. Let's see what the world has to offer on this front. Teams could sponsor their own competitions and from those winners they would pick the guys for the slam dunk competition. And all finalists to appear at the all-star saturday go home with like 50k and the winner with a million etc. NBA could also match the winning money to a charity of the sponsoring teams choosing to keep the teams invested and also winning money for worthy causes...
@anon2414

Teams sponsoring their own competitions...they wouldnt waste their time....they don't care....it's all star weekend. They used to have that dunk tv show with Kenny Smith...they could do something like that and have the finalists be in all star weekend. But it's hard to count out NBA players otherwise we would have never seen Aaron Gordon and Zach lavine

That really is a great idea. The NBA does have that kind of bank and marketing and organization. It would be an amazing reconnect with fans. They should absolutely do it. Sponsors would line up to be a part of the contests. Most of all who really benefits? Those street athletes who as Stephen A pointed out had a number of reasons that they couldn't get into the network that feeds future NBA players. Making dreams come true. Young men and women finally getting a break they deserve. Who knows? Many of them could end up getting shots to play. NBA do this!

Honestly: the most disappointing part of the dunk contest was Jalen Green's performance, because I expected SOMETHING good from him. He was the only one this year known as a generational dunker (Toppin can be argued too), and it looked like he just totally lost his nerve (and his handle). His second-made dunk even showed how good the whole thing COULD'VE been. He just tried to do way too much. Just disappointing, man.
