Films that actually used 3D immersively were Coraline, Rango, James Cameron's Avatar and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, The How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy, Rise of the Guardians and the first Croods. Some of these had a great director at the helm while others on top of animation had the great Roger Deakins as a visual consultant, helping the films hold up visually both regular and 3D.
@joylox Жыл бұрын
I wasn't allowed to watch Coraline as a kid (which I now understand) even though it came with my dad's blu-ray player. I ended up watching it a few years ago with some friends, and it was a great use of 3D! When it was still newer, How To Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me (and their sequels) where usually the go-to 3D movies to watch when friends would come over. Tangled was pretty good too as it was one of the first big animated Disney movies to get a 3D blu-ray.

Coraline was the first movie I saw in polarized 3d and, though I've seen lots of 3D movies since then, I feel like it was my absolute favorite use of the technology. It has a lot of really cool scenes that look amazing without being too jarring when viewed outside of 3D(The big battle with the other mother on her spider web comes to mind and is probably the coolest scene I've ever seen in 3D) The flight scenes in HTTYD were also very cool though!

As an early 2000s born person, it reminds me of the time when I was a kid in the late 2000s to early 2010s after Avatar became the most financially successful movie of all time, every movie company forced this 3D stuff on us for the next few years, even going as far as to make 3D BluRays and the 3DS as you have iterated. After the trend died, I eventually noticed that they hadn't done much with it since then except for IMAX and local cinemas bringing 3D back just for Avatar screenings.

Interesting, as your comment unlocked a similar memory for me. I had watched a limited subset of that at an amusement park while on holiday in the Gold Coast (probably WB Movie World) in 2010, that I believe was a 4D experience instead of just 3D, and that was the first time I learnt about the existence of different editions of books, especially famous ones that would get reprinted many MANY times. There was also a tiny element in the film that I wouldn't have thought about if I was just watching it in 2D, but in 3D, that got engrained enough into my mind to mix with a couple other figments to create a little element for an animated series idea I was inactively working on around that time, that element being an object or character which would later be scrapped a couple of times and have some elements carried over to a graphic novel idea I've been inactively working on since 2018. Edit: I had never watched the full film, only that limited 4D experience.

The “new” 3DS greatly improved the viewability of the 3D, where as long as it’s properly calibrated, sensors on the device will track your face and know where to angle the 3D. You have to do an initial calibration when setting it up, and then you can go back to the settings and redo it if you notice issues later. Certain games use it in really nice ways, like many games having their cutscenes animated in 3D, so while playing on my new 3DS LL, I like to turn it on for that spectacle at times, but it gives me a headache if I turn it on for too long, sadly. The face tracking makes it very usable except for that.

I remember going to see Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in theaters with my family when I was little. This was back when 3D glasses were still the classic blue and red tinted kind. Like 2/3 of the way through the movie (pretty sure it was during the buildup to the fight scene at the end), Floop appears on screen and instructs the audience to remove their glasses. Confused looks all around, but when we took them off, our vision was "stained" in blue and red, so we could experience the 3D effect without glasses. That was pretty mind-blowing as a kid, perhaps among my favorite ever theater experiences, even if the movie itself wasn't great.

I'm actually glad there's not a lot of 3d anymore, since I cannot see out of my right eye, resulting in 3d just not working for me. Since I can't see 3d, it makes me feel a bit left out. I wish someone could create a type of 3d that is all digital, and does not require 2 eyes in order to see it. When I saw star tours at disneyland, it wasn't as impactful for me as it might've been for other people, but I did notice something. When I looked at it without the glasses, I could see 2 images, but with the glasses, I only saw 1. 3d glasses do have an effect on me, and seeing star tours with the glasses was better than without, but I still couldn't see in 3d, since I was only able to see 1 image.

That’s how 3D glasses work. There are 2 images; one for each eye. The lens ‘removes’ the right image, and vice versa. That’s what gives it the 3D effect.

Omg, I just felt the nostalgia really hard. This was exactly my childhood / teenage years. While I'm from Europe, the development was almost the same as you described it in the video. I went to the cinema a lot with my parents and I think there were a few years where I only saw films in 3D. I still have a bag full of 3D glasses that I need to recycle, but I somehow missed the point a few years ago when I had less time and the pandemic came up. (We kept them after the film as I think our movie theater charged like 1€ for a new pair. Obviously we still always forgot them or went with friends so now I have like 20.) The 3DS was sadly out of our budget, but I remember that my cousin got it and I wanted it so badly - but only because it was the most gorgeous metallic blue🤣I played some Mario Kart on hers but I think I might've broken the record for the person with the fastest time to give up due to feeling sick because of the 3D, I didn't even make it through one round I think. The 4D cinemas I also remember, if in 30 years or so people look back on this decade they won't believe it. These are the weirdest stuff ever, not to mention the places you could find them. I was a very anxious child (and still have anxiety issues, look at that, how surprising), so everything that was that unpredictable and made to catch you a little bit off guard was the true horror to me. Yup, that's right: a normal 3D movie was fine but the pure thought of a movie theatre with moving seats scared the sh*t out of me🤣 Anyway, this didn't add much to the conversation but I just wanted to share my experiences and help the algorithm. Because I think your videos need more attention😊

I remember getting the 3DS when I was 11 in 2012 when ACNL came out, excitedly holding my new game and 3DS in the car and then when getting home, putting in the game after starting up the 3DS and turning on the 3D feature I was blown away, and then quickly turned it off an hour into playing

I love it when I find a random interesting channel with a substantial catalogue of videos I can mindlessly binge while I'm doing basic human tasks because my attention span is fucked. May your channel blow up.

I loved watching Transformers movies in 3D, and nowadays I still love 3D stuff in general. I guess it's been hardwired in my brain because of the massive push 3D stuff had during my childhood.

i distinctly remember re-watching Coraline for the first time in my pre-teen years (because i finally outgrew my fear of the movie) and finding a little 3D dvd and glasses in our Coraline Blu-ray copy. i put the glasses on for a moment, watched the opening song, then promptly watched the rest of the movie in 2d. it was such a weird time

I wonder how much of this 3D stuff is going to become lost media. I'm sure the TV stuff already has. I believe there is a way you can view 3D movies through VR. But a lot of home releases used the Red & Blue glasses. I like to think there's some rich 3D enthusiast, collecting the film reels for these. I really liked 3D in this era. Particularly when movies didn't shove it in your face. And I love my 3DS!

I'm gonna leave this comment as a marker for this channels future. Currently, it's December 30, 2022 and this channel has 4.1 K subscribers. I've only watched two videos on this channel so far and I'm planning on watching the rest of them. The content and style on here is simultaneously interesting and relaxing, and really resonates with me as a fellow gen z member. The quality of the videos is beyond that of channels with 100 times the subscribers. Keep up the fantastic content and I think you'll have a great future!

i saw barbie magic of the pegasus in 3d and charlie and the chocolate factory in imax 3d as a kid, and maybe some others i don't remember. the thing that bugged me about it was that i already wore regular glasses, and it was super difficult to keep the 3d glasses on over my own + it messed with my vision :/ i was always jealous of my siblings who could watch the movie Properly.

Journey to the Center of the Earth was the first and last proper 3D film I saw as a kid before I became blind in one eye. Glad I got to have the full experience on such a riveting feature film. Those blue butterflies? A once-in-a-lifetime sight (literally).

The 3D KZbin period was around just enough to let content creators experiment for a little while and wow their viewers. Just like Burger King hot dogs, it came... went... and nobody really complains it was discontinued. The best one I saw was Freddy Wong's 3D render of Mario's POV as he cleared the first stage while metal theme was playing. It's saved on an old drive. You really have me hooked on these random topic deep dives.

When I was a kid, I rented a Barbie DVD from the library. There was an option to watch the film in 3D, but it didn’t come with glasses (the previous owner probably lost them or something before giving it to the library). Being the weird kid that I was, I still put it on 3D mode because I thought the red and blue outline on the animation looked cool. 😂

Oh my gosh, shark boy and lava girl were played by such young children. When I first watched the movie as a kid, I thought they looked so much older and more mature than me. It's crazy looking back on old stuff like this.

whats so funny about you mentioning that avatar was a movie that was provided for 3d was how a couple of people told me that watching the second movie in 3d was a good idea and after doing it, it was such a surreal experience: the last time i had put on 3d glasses was maybe 2013-2016

I remember making my mom to take me to watch ParaNorman in 3D. It was my first 3D experience. Now my mom hates zombies and ghosts. My most recent experience in 3D was the live action The Little Mermaid with my sister. But I had to take my real glasses off to put on the 3D ones.

Watching 3d movies on a vr headset is next level. You don't have to worry about position or anything else extra. The problem is I don't think studios are going to cater to an audience that likely knows how to pirate their expensive films

Oh my god, I totally forgot that the Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D glasses were themed! Talk about an unlocked memory lol. I remember desperately holding onto my Sharkboy pair for future 3D movies, like they were the coolest thing ever. Another weird thing around this time was Smell-O-Vision via The Rugrats Go Wild. They gave you a little scratch and sniff card, and little queues would appear during the movie signaling you to sniff a specific square. Things like banana baby food, and dirty socks!

Another issue with 3D TVs that required glasses to work was the glasses were usually brand specific so samsung 3d glasses wouldnt work with an LG 3d tv for example. This made it harder to enjoy with friends unless you had extra glasses or they happened to own the same brand.

I remember shark boy and lava girl and journey to the center of the earth and the whacky 3-D glasses haha from my childhood. I also have a 3ds that I got for my 12th birthday in 2011 and I thought it was the coolest things ever. I like it when you talk about the history of 3d. I didn’t know that 3D goes back to time, interesting. I remember going to the imax theater watching movies in 3D for the glasses and making some nerd glasses when I was a tween in the early 2010s.

I remember someone having a 3D phone using the same kind of tech as the 3DS, but I gotta say, touch screen and 3D just ruined the illusion. Although I do still like my dad's 3DTV and the 3D blu-rays of the mid 2010s. How to Train Your Dragon (and sequels) looks beautiful in 3D, and Coraline was so spooky with the 3D effects. My dad's uses the same Real-D glasses, so I just took them home from the theatre. I gotta say, I miss 3D KZbin, and the New 3DS really improved the viewing angle. The videos were fun, and I liked making 3D drawings on it. I wish some of that stuff was still available to buy in 3D. I think the most recent one I have is probably Zootopia. It seems like most 3D stuff today is focused more on VR, as some headsets use two separate screens to get a 3D type look, and most current 3D cameras are made more for getting video that looks better in VR. VR makes me more dizzy than 3D stuff does, so I'm not sure how that will go.

Currently at 09:15 and I have to say I have three 3DS, I've been playing regularly since 2012 and I've always LOVED the 3D feature. Until a few years ago I never turned it off unless I wanted to show games to friends. Now I turn it off while doing homebrew stuff or sometimes when playing games that are only partially 3D, but I always turn it on when playing full 3D games. Some scenes look simply amazing and I don't get why everyone who doesn't get a headache still hates the 3D effect. Also, about cinema 3D glasses. I repainted them into superhero glasses with stuff like a "targeting system" on the inside of the glasses and painted parts of the outside glass with glitter colours. I still have all of them

I remember going to the theater with my mom to see the first Avatar movie in 3D. Unfortunately, the 3D effect never worked for me. In order for me to wear the special 3D glasses, I had to take off my normal glasses. I have severe astigmatism, so everything just looked blurry and really out of focus the whole time.

My family owned one of those 3D-capable TVs when they were popular, but the times that I used the 3D function could be counted on a couple of hands. However, watching 3D movies in VR and at IMAX theaters is enjoyable (as long as the movie’s 3D was good to begin with.
