www.engvid.com/ Learn when to use "that" and "which," and listen to a review of the two types of relative clauses. Commas are important and can change the entire meaning of a sentence! Make sure to also watch my lesson on relative clauses at www.engvid.com/writing-relativ... and to take the quiz on this lesson at www.engvid.com/that-which/#quiz

I think that the relative clause in the third sentence cannot be removed because there are 7 Harry Potter books and we don't know which one of the seven you finished last week. It's better to either say, "The Harry Potter series, which I finished last week, was excellent." or remove the commas and make it an identifying clause.

We can't find much difference in them while trying to understand, but I will tell you how one has to use them. Usually, we require them while writing a paragraph/an essay. As everybody knows that a paragraph is about one topic, and one has to focus on the same topic throughout the paragraph. However, in academic writing, you may have to divert something to give extra and out of the topic information. In this case, "which" should come into picture or else you are bound to use "that". Hope it helps

Very well explained. The main point is if the "which" adds necessary informtion to the frase, then it is no preceeded by a coma. As "that" can only be used for identifying clauses, all sentences with a non-indentifying clause REQUIERE the use of "which"

Great pieces of advice, Alex! You could've also given some examples with people being the subject in sentences with non-identifying clauses, in which case I believe there would be no room for "which", only for "who", right?

Thanks Alex , for your video and quiz , i attended the quiz and got a good score though, but i have one question for the very first question from the quiz. ques -which is correct .. 1-I saw a speeding car, which really startled me. 2- I saw a speeding car, that really startled me. i think "I saw a speeding car, which really startled me." is the correct one , bcoz "which really startled me" is a non-identifying clause . So using which should correct here. But quiz answer says "That" is correct one. Please explain a bit where i got wrong. Would really appreciate your comments ..

Can use both 'which' and 'that' to add an essential information to give more meaning to the sentence. Otherwise sentence would be incomplete. Can use 'which' when you add an extra sentence even though sentence do not need that extra information and it would make a perfect sense without it. Hope I got it right. Thank you!

thanks a lot for the lesson i have a question tho. so as from what i can tell if the information is worth mentioning use that if not use which (Btw i know it depends on the context but i meant in general) another thing if specific thing is mentioned in a sentence like this which one should i use (adidas is a company (that or which) provides stuff...... i've seen something like this and they say (which) . which makes sense as long its mentioned but i think that you can use both which or that because even if the information or the company's details are important so say but the company's name is mentioned before so it'd be additional information but u can use that because its essential i guess right? correct me if i'm wrong another example i am gonna say (annabelle is a movie (which or that) is directed by..... i think here its which just because the information is not that important and there only one movie that's called annabelle . another example is (another example (which or that) i'm not sure about. another thing (the movie (that or which called) something is played) .and (a movie (which or that)called something is played. all the examples that i mentioned are confusing and not sure what to say which or that last thing are you sure because all the teachers on yt i guess didn't say that you can use which or that in identifying clauses they say only that

Hi Alex I have a question. Does “She stopped me from going ahead with the plan, which was really bad” mean that it was really bad that she stopped me, or does it mean that the plan was really bad? (Obviously if I’d used ‘that’ instead of ‘which’ it would be clear that it was the plan that was bad). thanks and regards please reply
