My favorite part of this song is him having to explain that in concert that the song doesn’t promote violence…because he sings such an angry song he doesn’t need to express that violence otherwise…art and expression to heal the soul comes in many forms

Maynard is the only poet I know who can argue for a higher morality while screaming die
@waakdfms25762 жыл бұрын
He is indeed a true poet and emits screams that cannot be ignored, which gestures us all to a higher calling. He's a master - the rest of the band beckons him to bring it forth. Together they are like no other.
@TraditionalHippie2 жыл бұрын
@@waakdfms2576 are y’all thinking of Lateralus? Bc this song doesn’t evoke a higher morality, or higher calling, but a equally pernicious reaction to the asshole in question. If it wasn’t for Maynard’s preening interviews where *he* plays the asshole, we would take the lyrics on face value. It’s naively vengeful. The higher path doesn’t call for death, even if it’s symbolic/artistic

@Christopher Moltisanti It’s really cool! I like the middle eastern vibe on it. That’d be cool if they did a reissue of that like they did Opiate2
@Skabbible_your_nibble2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that live breakdown might be the the most melodically beautiful things they've ever done. It completely works, but it also feels strange that one of the prettiest sounding things they've ever concieved, not only was it on THIS song, of all songs, but It's not even on an album, lol I feel like Disposition, the bass during the "cold silence has..." portion of Schism, and the instrumental break after the first verse/chorus in No Quarter are the closest to that sound. Feel free to add any examples, because I feel like I'm missing something. Anyway, I've always dreamed of a full album of them experimenting within the space of calming soundscapes. If they ever do, it will likely be much later on, because they talk like they want to make heavy music as long as they are physically able. In a perfect world, they would have made an ambient album between Lateralus and 10,000 Days.
@bwhotwing4112 жыл бұрын
@@Skabbible_your_nibble Opiate2 has a really melodic, calming, cool soundscape. I also agree I wish they’d do more soundscape type of atmosphere added to their songs because they’re so good at it. Also Ticks and Leaches does too

@@JudeZino I actually personally don't agree. I am much more a fan of the original and less a fan of the over-processing of his vocals and the general digital sound of the master on Opiate^2. @JasonLevine11782 жыл бұрын
One thing to note about the EP is that while young Tool brings the energy, you can really tell that MJK's songwriting powers had yet to blossom to their full effect. These songs are much more "traditional" in both length and also with repeating verses and choruses (chorii?). Starting with Undertow you see them gradually move away from verse-chorus-verse and into the more narrative format that we all know and love. When lyrics get repeated on the EP, it feels like it is because MJK didn't know where to go next OR he did know but was afraid to alienate labels. Once they had their contract, he may have felt freer to experiment with non-traditional, progressive structures and now when lyrics are repeated it feels like it is for emphasis/impact instead of just having lyrics.

An interesting take dude There are alternate lyrics to this song that replace the lines (from memory) "shoot you myself" to "fuck you myself" and "shoot you in the fucking head" to "fuck you in your fucking ass". I think it's a straight up call-out on hypocrisy. Awful people being allowed to get away with awful things because they have money and influence. Makes me think of the Harvey Weinstein's of this world The other (considerably darker) theory I've had is that it's to whoever the subject of Prison Sex was. It works especially well with the alternate lyrics Really looking forward to the the title track. Probably my favourite pre Ænima track
