These aircraft are constructed of mostly 6061T so they are very resistant to corrosion . The original CX4 has lived on the Florida coast for 14 years, mostly outside, with no significant corrosion.

Please do more videos of your CX5. A detailed review kind of video would be fun to watch.

Hi Jason,,You are doing a very informative job, I am changing my CX-4 to a Tri gear and if you could do a short clip when you install the nose gear it would be great. My project is still in the building stage. Thank You, steven Keep up the great work!!

Whilst i appreciate the work that has been put into building this beautiful little airplane there are a couple things i would not pass if i were inspecting it No jointing compound being used between ANY places where two pieces of metal steel or alloy are being riveted or bolted together, have you ever seen what the slightest bit of dampness can do between two pieces of aluminium?. Steel bolts being in contact with ali without being given a coating of jointing will set up electrolysis NASTY. The other thing was i noticed no self etch primer being used anywhere or were all the things i noticed to be done later ? But still a great project and am i to believe this is not a kit if so more power to your elbow. Alan Brown

If you don't mind me asking... How much has this costed so far and how much do you plan on it costing in the long run?

Sorry for the delay in answering. I have about $4K in fuselage and have bought about 5k of avionics. I hope to be at the 19k mark when done.

@@jasonstahl1327 9 Dec, 2020. Hey Jason! Watching your videos you mentioned that you are/have moved from Arlington to EC, North Carolina. I’m very much interested in the CX5. I live just north of you in Virginia Beach. I would be most pleased to have a chance to chat with you about your CX5 or better yet come down and see it. I’m 6’-4” and 228 lbs. Have enjoyed watched a few of your build videos. Email: swt1953@aol.com / cell~text: 757-339-8834 Thank You! Steve Thomas

Jason, it's a long time since your last video, there is some progress in the plane? I just bought the plans and now waiting for them, and I'm trying to gather all the information I can. Pablo.

Yes, I agree, too much time has elapsed. The problem I face is a 100 year old house I bought and my lovely spouse has been in Florida since June on an internship. My second career hasn't helped. I am going to try to sort projects soon and devote some hours each week to the Thatcher. In short, nobody has missed any building. Thanks for the interest!

Sometimes life has too many distractions, and I guess a 100 years old house has a lot of things to fix, remodel or change, and without the help of your wife it must be hard. I hope you can start building soon. BTW, you have done a very nice job with the airplane. First thing I want to do when the plans arrive is modeling the plane in 3D (Autodesk Inventor), so I can have all parts and assemblies resolved virtualy before start building the real thing.

Any new news to share with us? It's been over 2 years since this video. I know life gets in the way, but if you get time we would all love to see more. Thanks

Hey Brent, thanks for the interest. Yes it has been much too long. A brief synopsis of the last 2 years. I retired from the FAA soon after this video in 2016 and moved from the DC area, and unfortunately, Techshop (they have had there own tribulations as well). Hanger space in my new hometown was not available and my 100 year old house did not have a garage, so the Thatcher moved into a storage locker, waiting for me. I'm looking for a new home, possibly in Florida, with a huge shop. So, not abandoned, but no way to run an airplane factory. More to come!

Alan, correct, it is not a kit but all parts fabricated in my shop (or Techshop). Corrosion control has been thought about. I have now moved to coastal NC and will prime the wing interior, undecided about the fuselage, but likely as it's a mixture of Alclad and 6061. Bolts are cadmium plated, which is galvanically compatible with aluminum, and should be noted AC43-13 says bolts should be installed clean and dry, no coatings. Where steel components bolt to aluminum (wing attach brackets et al) the steel was powder coated. I am preparing to film a new episode, I just moved the plane down to Elizabeth City last week.
