The Iron Lady was right about the European Monetary union. She said that she believed the Pound Sterling was an expression of sovereignty, and also that the EMU as it was proposed would be a federal Europe from the back door. Many countries have rushed into the euro adventure, often without popular support. Now most gouvernments regret is deeply, but are still not ready to admit that they regret it. Thank God Sweden took the wise move and stayed out. They're talking about Grexit now, but they will be talking about the EU-turn and EUxit very soon.
@GeorgeMonet4 жыл бұрын
It does make sense that continental Europe would strive to become a federal Europe for its own protection and defense. One of the greatest fears all the little nations held was that their neighbors would attack them. Plus being one large federation gives each nation more international power than they would have individually.
@sean_haz2 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeMonet it doesn't give nations any international power. It gives the "Federal Europe" as you called it more power. The individual countries would be giving up all their power to the federation.

As an ardent admirer of Thatcher, I have to say that, as much as I disagree with him on so many matters, the points made by Tony Benn during this debate were very prescient to the politics of today. He may have been wrong on the role of the state as against the role of the individual in our society, but he was certainly correct on the role of Parliament as against the powers of supra-national organizations such as the EU. It's very sad that the Labour Party cannot muster more of his like in this day and age.

She was so right about Europe and the Euro, the way she put down Neil Kinnock was brilliant, if only May had the same ability in dealing with Corbyn she would be a better PM. It's interesting to note whilst Thatcher was deriding the EU and the Tories cheering her to the hilt, that John Major who was sitting behind her was very glum faced, that man along with Blair have a lot to answer for in getting Britain into such a mess with Europe. Tony Benn was superb, his vision on Britains relationship with Europe was correct in that he could see that the EU was going to take away our democracy, what a pity today's Labour Party don't see that, especially his drippy son Hilary Benn!
