It is all about tight packaging for weight and the edgy handling and power delivery with high and sudden torque on the back wheels. I have always had manual racecars for 50 years. I want a DCT. I want it for the quick shifts, I want it for never missing a gear. Strange how all F1 cars, rally cars and road race cars are either DCT or a sequential gearbox. The only real disadvantage of a DCT is the gearbox will not allow you to left foot brake into corners with some accelerator input. This is a car that you get up at 4 am to drive your special mountain section. This is not the car you take to the shops for a carton of milk, that car has power steering and it will be an auto.

I understood from Alfa's promotional material the 4C's engine was developed specifically for the 4C, using the architecture of the existing, normally aspirated, iron block unit. The 4C's all aluminum turbo unit was then fitted into the Giulietta for the Quad version of that car.

I would suggest everyone in the "but it's not manual!" camp first go and drive one before they comment 😂 If you understand and experienced how edgy and nervous the steering and handling is, paired with the low weight (EU specs cars are 2000lb...) you will understand that a manual would detract from the driving experience in this unique case. The rest of the the raw experience more than makes up for the lack of a clutch pedal... You need both hands on the wheel and 150% concentration AT ALL times or it will try to kill you every chance it gets 😂 I drive mine daily. Pure joy. If there was a high revving N/A engine option like a v6 that would work in manual, but having the torque to weight ratio of a GTR or an early C63AMG with sudden delivery to the back wheels when the boost hits... you will want to have all your reflexes and energy focussed on the job at hand 😉 (And I have manual classic Alfas and race cars so not an auto fan)

The title is silly. It’s not “sketchy.” Anyone who really knows cars wouldn’t use that term. It’s clickbait. My ‘18 4C Spider is my daily driver, and it’s SICK!! The “floaty”-ness is probably over-inflated tires. 27psi front, 29psi rear. When I picked mine up, it was super floaty above 70. Tires were at 35psi all around. Now it’s SMOOTH well past triple digits. Several aftermarket suppliers for it, not like other cars, but it’s NOT “basically non-existent”...

If this Alfa were available with a manual gearbox, I would lust after it. But, not only was there no manual, the paddlebox shifts were also reported to be very clunky. For me, even a really good semi-auto is a deal breaker. Gotta have an H-pattern shifter, and the opportunity to enjoy the process of shifting gears, to be a proper driver's car. The decision not to offer a true manual, and the use of this harsh dual-clutch, killed this otherwise fantastic little car.
@fortheLOVEofMODsMike3 жыл бұрын
yeah, I said the SAME thing. Then got to drive one. I think it's the only car I've ever driven that a manual might not make sense. I can't even describe it beyond needing both hands on the wheel when you start to push it and click those video game steering wheel mounted paddles

It’s not the same engine. That has a 1.7 turbo, dart and 500 have a 1.4

Some years got 1.6l engines, the 1.75 In the 4C is based on that engine but it bespoke to the Alfa, engine alone is 20k+ from the dealer

You can get these motors up to that power number, but a 4C with 400 HP would simply be too much.

As an owner of this same vehicle, I can attest to the fact that it only behaves well when you treat it badly. It is a car that was designed to be driven like you stole it all the time. Drive it any other way and it bucks, snarls, and shudders like an unhappy lion in cage. It offers you nothing but the joy of driving. However, it gives you that joy like drinking from a fire hose.

The engine is not similar to a Fiat 500 Abarth. Its much bigger and shares it with the Giulietta, Brera, 159, 939 Spider. 1386cc vs 1750cc engines
