Here are few compositions of Sri Mysore Shivarama Shastry in Kannada.
These are the outpourings of a realised soul, after meeting whom Swami Vivekananda had exclaimed, “I have seen only one masculine vedantin in the country and he is Mysore Shivarama Shastry.”
The mudra or signature in these compositions is ‘Guru Shankara’.
0:03 - Guru paadadolu mana bereyalilla
6:21 -Thaanennabahude ee dehava
11:24 -Summane Brahmavaaguvane
14:45 -Nodamma nodu Paramaathmana
18:00 -Guru paadadi beredu
21:49 -Narano Vaanarano Paamaraniva
25:06 -Thaanembudonduntadenu saviyamma
29:20 -Naane naanalladinnenondu
35:09 -Guruve gathiyennu manave
38:48 -Gnaana onde saaku mukthige
Brief information about the composer of these Tathwapadas:
• A system in which the most learned can trip and the innocent can easily walk through. Swami Paramaananda Bharati cites Lord Krishna who says in Bhagavad Gita, Bliss in Vedanta can be attained, by only a jnAni who is a tatva darshi. Such a jnAni is one who can realise and see Truth as it is. Mysore Shivarama Shastry, was one such jnAni who lived in the later part of the 19th century. He was an AsthAna vidvAn in the Mysore Palace. After resigning from this position, he lived a bold and unfettered life of an avadhUta. He was a great scholar and can be called modern-day Rishi.
There are two parts in Vedas, First part is called Karma Kaanda and the other one is jnaana kaanda. Karma kaanda shows the path to eliminate the present sufferings and to obtain future happiness. But the happiness obtained through this is not permanent and ultimate. For the one who understands this truth and wishes to obtain this permanent and ultimate bliss, Jnaana kaanda shows the path towards it. Karma kaanda teaches what must be done for the sake of one's well-being.
Whereas Jnaana kaanda teaches what one must be aware of, to gain ultimate/permanent happiness. When one ponder over this truth of ‘who am I?’, ultimate/permanent happiness can be obtained.
Every individual crosses these stages of childhood, teenage, youth, middle age, and old age. Then who am I in this? Am I the one who is growing physically and crossing these stages? Or Am I the one who is just a spectator of all these stages? When one says that am just a spectator, then it is clear that one is different/separate from the visible physical body. So who is that one, which is separate from the visible physical body?
We don’t have the answer to this. This is where Jnaana kaanda helps one to know the absolute truth of the ‘Self’(Who am I?). One feels pleasantness in Deep sleep even without having contact with any sensory things. Without any effort, you are getting this happiness in deep sleep. The happiness that you are gaining without any physical/materialistic things is your real nature. Despite this being the truth, when you are awake, you assume to be/attach yourself to, the physical being and suffer a lot or gain limited happiness. So when you are aware of your ‘true self' you are in bliss with your ultimate nature.
Then who am I in that deep sleep? Poojya Sri Shivarama Shastry will answer this question in these thathwapadas about your nature of ‘true self’. Just by listening to these often, helps us in understanding all the difficult concepts of Upanishads in the easiest way and one can obtain or stay in that ultimate, eternal bliss of 'Self' (Aatma Sukha).
