You usually need to at least fix all the defects after sanding and if you paint it with flat paint it should look decent. Or if you texture it it may look better depending on your overall skills.

Thank you for taking time to make these videos! I just removed all the popcorn from my 10ft livingroom ceiling. Sanded all the excess off, as you suggested. Now, after filling and sanding nicked spots, and repairing damaged areas, is it necessary to mud over the old butt joints again before painting....and would you mud the entire ceiling? This is my first time doing this and I'm enjoying the process, but afraid of royally screwing it up! Also, after the ceiling is ready to paint, would you suggest using a Kilz type base before painting? Thanks again!

I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and tackled my first ceiling this week. A contractor said the popcorn was painted and quoted me $26,000 to remove and replace 3,000 sf of drywall. I tested it and found that none of it was painted! It took me 3-1/2 hours to scrape a 13x13 room today. (not counting 3 trips to Lowe’s, setting up, or tomorrow’s cleanup. I’ll leave the sanding and painting to the pros. Thank you!

There's a lot of reasons to remove the texture. I've found popcorn ceiling that was incredibly stubborn. It's always best to remove it. It exposes underlying damage that needs to be repaired, cracked joints, screw pops etc. I've run some over and never had a problem, but like this kilted guy says, it's best to remove it. There is a fairly high potential of bond failure if you do not remove it, also like I'm saying if it was put up with nails and they are all popped, that's something you want to fix. Re-screw those sheets and repair any cracks.

After scraping the popcorn off, I still had a lot of base on mine. I leveled it out with 80 grit sandpaper on my stick sander, filled all the low spots by skimming it with hot mud or in some cases lightweight compound, and textured it, painted with no problem. I’ve never textured on top of the base directly without putting at least two layers of compound.

Problem is, if you keep scraping a wet surface you’re going to remove some of the original drywall mud so I find it much faster to just sand it. And easier. But if you want to spend the time you can wash it off unless it has been painted. That can make it impossible. Either works if it’s not painted

I was hoping you recommend a video of yours of how freshen up the taped joints, when I hold up a 16 inch knife olong these taped joints I see valleys average 3/32 of an inch. And how do you spruce up the I side corners. I know why painters spray and texture ceilings and wall as it is areas way tocover a lot of tapping sins. I want to achieve a nice smooth ceiling which I want to paint white which will highlight imperfections in the drywall mud application. I am looking forward do any advice you may have. Now once I removed the popcorn from the ceiling, I see that now you have to sand it making sure you remove everything...Once I removed all the dust of the ceiling by cleaning it - is it necessary to prime/seal it prior to skim coating it ?? and what would you recommend - sorry for all the questions but I want to do it right the first time around no matter how long it takes..I'm retired so I don't have the monies to pay a professional to do it... 😊😊

I’m buying a home with popcorn ceilings and we definitely want to remove them in the future. Trying to understand how we get from popcorn removal to painting. So you remove the popcorn, sand, then mud it, prime, and paint? Do you have to mud the whole thing or just the joints and rough areas? We would probably want just a flat texture so is mudding the whole thing necessary or just if you want texture?

The law for contractors having to be Asbestos rated and not homeowners is because the expectation is that a contractor could be exposed every day. A one time homeowner encounter with asbestos isn't that dangerous as long as basic precautions and cleaning is done. It takes long term exposure to it with no precautions and protection to have health concerns. A contractor would want to be trained in after removal and cleanup to protect from homeowner legal issues. Probably best to fully clean out the HVAC ductwork after removal. My popcorn is from 1984 so hoping it is clear.

There’s pretty much no instance where you always have to skim coat something other than for a Level 5 smooth finish. Drywall always has a rule of coat if it needs it, don’t if it doesn’t. It’s a lot more in-depth than that so I’ll be answering questions like that in courses at drywallacademy.com

Hi Guy I love the videos. I just thought I'd run some things by you. So for instance on that ceiling in this video is it necessary to skim coat the entire ceiling? Or just feather joints more. I just skimmed an 11x 20 room after scraping. I skim by spraying ceiling some times I roll but not for this job and immediately using a magic trowel to knock it down; whick works great. Problem comes in on sand because you have to sand whole ceiling. I'm wondering if you treated it like a new ceiling and just did joints and sanded if it be ok. I have the new DeWalt drywall sander it looks just like Porter cable but it don't offer me much help on skimmed ceilings, however very good for right after popcorn was scraped. I know you have done alit of these so wondering your thoughts. PS I hope flat ceilings go out of style real quick it's all people want 😔😭 Mr. Ken

If you get the dusty part of the popcorn ceiling completely removed you can skimcoat and then prime but priming before won’t hurt and if you do that just use a PVA primer for the final priming as it’s a lot cheaper and less odor etc.

After sanding I finish the joints like it’s me construction, coating anything that needs it, sanding that as needed, then texturing. I NEVER skim coat the entire ceiling unless it received minor damage every foot or so.

Hi. If the popcorn ceiling was asbestos containing, is it still safe to sand? A professional team abated the asbestos ceiling, but I would think there would still be some residual asbestos that you wouldn't want to sand, or would it all be gone?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, it should ALL be gone. But that's my best opinion, I don't know it for fact.

If it has asbestos this would be incredibly dangerous. If you disturb it, the particles will be airborne.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY2 жыл бұрын
They said they had an asbestos abatement team come in. Those guys know what they’re doing and they should have gotten rid of anything they could touch.
you can't sand it. there's always some remaining unfortunately... the abatement crew will only take off the bulk of it, but there's still trace amounts on the surface. they should absolutely tell you this. also it will be encapsulated with a special sealant after removal - but it is mostly like gardz, however priming it also an option. the sealer/primer should help with adhesion and locking things onto the surface.

Are all the white spots on the ceiling the mud that needs to come off or is some of it the joint compound and doesn't need to be scraped off? So sand the entire ceiling? Vacuum it down well? Can't you wash the dust away? Does it normally have some problems that need to be fixed like holes and dips? Once that is fixed can you just paint it with a paint that has the primer in the colored paint? Thanks anyone.

Sand, leave mud on the nails and joints, remove the dust, fix the problem areas, recoat as needed, continue. I have an e-book coming out all about how to do all this soon so be watching for it at etsy.me/3dxrMRK

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks. We will try a small bedroom and see how it goes. We would hire someone but we don't want the whole house torn up at once.

I am glad you tested for asbestos before sanding/scraping it , well done for pointing this out. Asbestos if inhaled is a very dangerous health hazard I understand.

We had someone do the ceiling. Since we are living there, we had it done in two different weeks as we had to move half the house furniture into the other half and then reverse it. We have been very happy with the results.

Hi Kilted Guy. This video was helpful. I just scraped popcorn off several ceilings and am having trouble covering "tape" around the edge of the ceilings. Do I need to cover that with joint compound and then paint?#doitright
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
If the tape isn't loose, bubbled etc, then you probably should coat it. If it looks well coated, you might not have to but to be safe, you could just do it. Here's a video showing how. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6HNfaJ9a5dgac0

Hi, Guy! Fellow Coloradan (and first time home owner!). We've followed all of your advice and have gotten the sanding just about finished. What's the best way to get all the dusty sand out? We're pulling up the carpets and I've shop-vac-ed it. Would love some tips on how best to clean after this messy job. Thank you! :)
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Just lots of vacuuming, but be sure the vacuum has a bag rated for drywall dust. It won't clog up quite so fast, and won't let dust back out like other filters will. Might want to wash down the walls though if you didn't mask them. I usually mask all walls and floors. If the floor will be replaced I still lay down plastic to catch the majority and make it easier to clean up. Like I did in this video- kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5zUdJ1mrKutrbc

Hi .. I just scraped off my popcorn ceiling and that is exactly what happened so do I use an electric sander or hand sand it? Luckily it’s only a 3x 12 area .. thank You . Margaret
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
You can hand sand it. A sanding sponge, or drywall hand sander can work for a small area. YOu can power sand it, but it will be extra dusty and be careful not to sand to far, into the brown paper.

I removed my popcorn ceilings but messed up the joint tape. Should I take it all off and just put new one or lay it over?

It’s always best to remove anything that’s loose and sound and redo it. But if it’s still stuck don’t remove that part. Guy. And thanks for subscribing

I would sand the ceiling with my drywall sander and then touch up any areas that needed it. Should you then prime the ceiling because its never been painted?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
Always prime raw drywall before painting. Prime after texture if you texture at all.

Thank you, I just painted my ceilings after popcorn removal and my paint flaked terribly. 😩

Hey there, looking to remove my popcorn ceiling. After fixing any minor/major imperfections and sanding I plan to roll or stamp on texture. Question before I do that do I need to prime the celling?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Not mandatory but it will help the Mudd not dry to fast.

man im bidding this 16 ft vaulted ceiling with angles here and there. its over 1k sq ft of ceiling all throughout that needs to be removed prepped and painted. i almost dont want to do it. might just bid extra high for the hell of it.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
When in doubt, bid higher and be safe. I always bid higher on high ceilings, like .50-$1.00 per square ft more

I just want to paint my ceiling after removal of popcorn. So by your video the ceiling will have to be sanded repair made if any are needed and then I can prime then paint. Is this correct?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
Ok, the truth is, 90% of ceilings that are removed, sanded, and repaired, then painted, won't look great at all. You're talking leaving it smooth, which actually requires more work to look good. You might can do it and it might look fine, since it's up high, depending on your lighting. If light seldom shines across the ceiling, and you paint it flat, it might look ok. You can try it and if the joints show, you could go ahead and coat them and sand them to get them flatter. But the sanding is real important, and at least repair the noticeable defects. (Hint, shine a light across the ceiling you'll see more defects that way)

Another option is to put a binding primer on the ceiling after scraping - can help in avoiding eating all that dust and sanding too much where the tape shows.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY2 жыл бұрын
You really still need to remove ALL the original popcorn carrier mud. It’s junk and WILL try and flake off. It happened to me a few times. Putting a bonding primer over the top of something that’s not stuck to the surface doesn’t do any good.

How do you feel about ONLY sanding the popcorn, rather than doing wet removal and then sanding?

Hi my friend. Quick question, is the price of removing popcorn ceiling apart to the skim coating? 🤨
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I never skim coat after removing. I'll skim coat instead of removing but not after, UNLESS I'm doing a level 5 smooth finish, which is very rare in my area. And, Thanks for subscribing and helping me hit the 100,000 subscriber mark by my birthday on June 10th, 2021. I truly appreciate it. Guy

We scraped and sanded our popcorn ceiling and there were still slight crater-like imperfections (not deep). We thought ceiling paint would fix the imperfections, but it didn’t. What would you suggest we do at this point to smooth the ceiling? Will more coats of paint work? Should we skim coat? Thanks in advance!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY2 жыл бұрын
Paint covers very little so skim coating is probably your best option
