Hello again, I have another question if you have time to answer. Is it okay to paper and mud a crack without removing trim. I've removed trim in the past and I have a propensity for breaking it. Thanks

Yup! I scrapped all my old popcorn ceiling. I wiped the area clean w a rag, put zinzers bonding prep adhesive, went over my tape and butt-joints, rolled two coats of all purpose as a skim coat, light sanded everything, shot my texture w a hopper, knock down, then two coats of pcv drywall primer and then two coats of Sherwin-Williams paint

Laminate paneling w/1/4" sheetrock using shims and liquid nails if you plan it correctly you can recess and railroad your butts and using shims the butt seam can turn out like a factory resewed seam because you can screw to the field because behind the rock is wood panel and it will suck the rock tight to the panels , so if you shim about 12" before a butt in the field on either side of the butt and screw to the shims like studs , when you screw off the butt joints and they will be sucked below the surface of the rock . ( still screw off your sheets like normal though ,the glue is an extra step to add rigidity not in place of screws. Follow gluing instructions according to the products label as there are many different products on the market these days. ) So if your supplier has 14' 1/4" you might be able to get away with only a handful of butts that you can rail road and finish with a 12" box vertically like the rock was hung up and down like commercial sheet rock is hung. I have coated paneling before , but it had been hung to cover existing lav and plaster original walls and was not flappy . we did how ever tape every vertical stripe resulting in 80% coverage with tape .. this was the contractors choice and before the wide spread availability of 1/4" rock . What we did worked , but was material and labor intensive and would be counter productive with 1/4" rock easy to obtain and have delivered to the site. Skimming over multi layers of old wall paper is also something I know tricks to keep you from chasing 1,000,000 blisters . Maybe That Kilted Guy DIY can do a vid on that nightmare ..

For any staining from oil like on a remodel and say you are re-texturing the kitchen celling removing some old popcorn and there is oil residue formed on the celling after you have removed any old texture , before you skim or coat if you do not seal it or completely remove or hang new rock over it , it will flash through your texture job, and chances are modern latex paints will not cover or stick to any oil on the surface you intend to coat/repair . So my fix is to apply one or two coats as needed to seal/cover 100% of (*Important : do not skimp out and buy the water based version in blue ,results vary widely and I would not guarantee there would not be problems in the future with bleeding of any stains .) Original White Oil-Based Interior Primer, Sealer, and Stain Blocker in the red and white can , the spray -paint can also be used in hard to get to places , but extra precautions are required for proper ventilation . You don't want to mess around with the spray paint it will mess you up if you are breathing the fumes during use ! and use all purpose mud preferably a brand that has plenty of glue in the mix for any areas you have a question about adhesion to the project surface , generally I have found the normal scraping of the repair area to remove any loose rock or blistered paper is enough to score the surface and always results in a good bond . Kilz can also be used to seal water damaged sheet rock as long as the original moisture issue has been solved and the sheetrock has been treated for mold before sealing . Another use for the kilz is to seal concrete or brick walls before texture , the paint greats a moisture barrier preventing moisture wicking into the texture or skim mud and causing the mud to loose its bond with the coated surface. Hot mud or dura-bond can be used if time is an issue , how ever I would use a spray adhesive for any tape to insure no blistering happens as a result of the structure or walls shifting over time . I started learning to be a finisher at the age of 10 from my step-father and stuck with it for 25 years ,I have seen a lot of crazy sheetrock damage in that time and have learned the best ways that always work for me in a mid-west operating environment. Hope someone can use this bit on sheetrock prep to add to the video by that Kilted Guy DYI.

Great info but zero dust is best because in my experience as a drywall finisher (years ago), even a little dust will contaminate the mud and it'll get all boogered up and you'll eventually get drag marks in it. A small hand broom will work wonders and even an old paint brush will work just fine to knock the dust off and make it clean enough to coat again.
