Me too.. I hung a swing in my living room for my granddaughter. After struggling for what seemed Ike hours, I finally settled on what I figured was the best choice for what this thing gave me. Needless to say, as my granddaughter was swinging, making her KZbin video WHAM the swing, and she crashed straight to the floor. She was embarrassed and hurt her back a bit.. she is only 11, so I quickly blamed the owner of the house for buying cheap wood. She is still mad at that man, and I have been too afraid to attempt another mishap like that . Thank you for this video life just aint the same without a swing, lol

Well you might become my best new friend for the next month. I am having my home repiped due to leaks from copper pipe in my foundation. Contractors will be cutting the drywall to run Pex to all fixtures. They’ll replace and patch drywall but not do anything with the finish. I found your channel when researching how to spray finishes. Secondly I have a saggy drywall ceiling that I can’t find the studs to resecure the drywall, so I need a stud finder. I had no clue how they operated and your video made me a lot smarter. Great visual and explanation. If I’m going to tackle all the drywall repair Im going to have to buy a compressor and sprayer, so I’ll be culling through your videos to see what a dIY guy should buy. I do appreciate the lesson. I'm retired and I have a disability now, but I'm going to need skills to take on home repairs myself. Short story: Someone did damage to my home a few years ago deliberately. He omitted a critical step in his work (to pocket the money, I presume), and I didn't discover what he had done to me until last year. By that time, there was water damage in more places than where he worked. He's in the wind, and I'm stuck with a house in trouble as well as a mortgage. I'm going to have to rely on You Tubers for instruction. I'm a pretty good student, though, and I'm the process of building a tool collection. I did have questions about stud finders and I guess you've now answered them. So, I'll be watching your videos, and fwiw, I think kilts are very cool.

Most critical point you make is that you want to keep your body and limbs or anything out and away from the device while calibrating, didn't realize they were calibrating in a spheroid shape like that, no ones ever said that before. Thank you for the studfinder information video. It has helped me to learn more about how a studfinder works correctly. I live in a preFab (modular) home and I haven't hung any shelves bc several items have unscrewed itself from the wall, i.e. wall hooks. This is what happened after I bought the home. So, it just seemed more hassle than not to just not try and hang anything. I hope you are able to find a great home to settle into. I just completed one year of Breast Cancer treatment, and I'm just now getting my strength and energy to support my home projects. I bought the The StudBuddy at Home Depot, and after watching your video, I feel better about using it for accuracy. Though, this tech girl would like to try to the fancier tools, but for now, simple, keepin' it simple. The information on the effect of hand changes helped me. Thanks. I've also found that another problem is old drywall. New, particularly ultralite, drywall is easier to assess. Old drywall seems to give much more variable results - at least in my experience. Also, walls that have been surface treated with drywall "mud" to make the surface variable seem to give poorer results (as might be predicted due to variable density).

After trying several, I finally settled on the CH Hanson (03040) magnetic stud finder. Quick, simple, and accurate. The magnets detect metal nails or screws going into studs. Once I've found one, I verify the stud's location by moving the tool up and down to find others just above or below. With several found, I can be sure of the stud's location. I don't drill deep unless I find solid wood, so electrical or plumbing is not a problem.
@jckncoke2 жыл бұрын
I have the same CH Hanson and gave up my electronic stud finders for this. Yes, I know how to use sn electronic one, used them for over 10 yrs. The magnetic one works flawlessly and can find studs quickly because you can run it against the wall way faster than the electronic ones and quickly find a nail or screw. It's also way smaller about 1in x 3in (with a built in level too) and it does not require a battery.

Are you sure it's "vertigo," or some other dizziness/imbalance disorder? I ask because you also mentioned peripheral neuropathy. A lot of doctors simply say "vertigo." Vertigo = you are spinning or your surroundings are spinning, which is only one type of dizziness, but easy to hang their hat on that because they don't know any better. Did your primary physician diagnose you, or a specialist like a neurotologist or otoneurologist? (the average ENT is completely ignorant). Do you have any diagnosed vestibular disorder? Any history with heavy metals or other toxins? Not saying you don't have "vertigo" but you could have something else. Google "CANVAS" + another key word like "balance" with it. Best of luck.

I had a heckuva time with my studfinder on a recent project. It turned out the interior wall originally bordered a garage which was later remodeled as a heated bedroom and a new garage added. Consequentially, the space in the walls was insulated with foil backed insulation. The foil made finding the studs with a typical stud finder very difficult and unreliable. Tapping the walls was the most reliable in that case. I don’t think I’d randomly drive nails because there could be piping or wiring back there. There is less likely to be hat stuff inside the stud, though certainly that can happen for horizontal runs. Studs are often accompanied by a sheet rock junction. In that case the two sheets of Sheetrock may have different densit meaning you can’t read both edges with a single calibration. You might need to calibrate left and scan right, then calibrate right and scan left to find the stud edges. My favorite thing is just look for studs across at different heights on the wall and place a piece of painters tape on each, then try again 1’ lower and repeat a few times. Some of your tape will fall in a nice vertical line that you can confirm with a level. Other tape is just crazytown and you can ignore that.

Super instruction. Very clear and thorough. I feel more confident in using an electronic finder. I've been one of those that has had miserable failures with them before and have been extremely reluctant to try again, especially living in a new apartment and don't want to needlessly mar the walls with missed holes.

Thanks. I'm a novice and returned my last stud finder since I did not think it worked even though I tried diligently (I ended up using traditional low-tech alternatives such as banging on the wall and measuring from outlets). The manufacturers of the stud finders should all give buyers a link to this video in the literature they provide with the device. It might result in fewer returns for the sellers and less frustration for the buyers.

Any extra tips regarding using the stud finder to find electrical wires? That's what I'm most worried about
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
I’ve honestly never used it for that. Electrical wires should be routed right in the middle of the wall and when I’m cutting drywall, I try to always go no more than 1/4 inch deeper than the drywall so it’s never been a big concern for me.

Great advice. Thanks. It seems like the two studs side-by-side and the flat 2x4 give pretty much the same reading. If you think you have the flat 2x4 and actually have the two studs, when you drill in the middle, you'll go between. Well, that just makes everything that more of an adventure. I'm putting a grab bar over tile and trying to find a stud. I have a DeWalt, which is fairly simple center finder, plus a Zircon center finder. The Zircon set on deep scan is finding nothing. The Dewalt is consistently telling me there is a stud with a fairly straight line of pencil dots down the wall. Oddly, if there is one there, that stud would be on a 20.5" center while the rest of the studs are on 16" centers. The other side of the wall is a hallway so no connecting walls that I know of. Light bulb just came on. Measure down the wall to that stud then do the same in the hall and see if I get a stud in that location. Like I said, more of an adventure...

Great video! I didn't know about the calibration and sensitivity to pencils, hands, etc. That probably explains some of the issues I/ve had. Thanks!

I’m real old school I still have and use, what was used before all these electronics, it’s a Lawrence Bros No. 40 super sensitive stud finder. I have been using it for years both on home projects and professionally, being a union carpenter.

Really liked the video. Over the years I have probably purchased 4 or 5 of these. I like the Zircon. Have used magnets from a computer hard drive...too strong and scuffs the wall. Keep up the good work

Finally a good explanation of these electronic stud finders. I bought a $65 Zircon and the so called owners manual was just the printing on the cardboard packaging. Did not work. No explanation that you must not change how you hold it! Bot worth the money even if doing everything you say must be done to get it to work. The simple magnetic pointer mods work fine.

Found my way over to your video after watching a really idgit video telling people to knock on the wall or use a magnet. SMDH. First Zircon I bought, I just figured I didn't know how to use it when things didn't go smoothly. Went back and read the directions, did some research, went back to it, and was the easiest thing I've ever used. Now I have people asking me to hang their tvs and whatnot ever since. Thanks for a video showing people how to do things the right way.

Great video. At first I thought it was too long, as as in "how complicated can this be?". I decided I was only going to watch as much as I needed. But, as I was watching and my questions were answered, I picked up more questions, until eventually all of them were answered and I had finished the video. Thanks for that!

Great video. I didn't know that my other hand can interfere with the detection. Sometimes I place my other hand on the wall to keep me steady. However, I need to point out a common issue with these stud finder how-tos. A real wall will have dry walls on both side, when you demonstrate with a half wall, you are giving the stud finder an easy job.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY4 жыл бұрын
That's true, but it still tried to calibrate for what's there. They are far from perfect, but used correctly they work much better. I used to cuss them tall the time, now just on days that end in Y.
@WoodeverWorks4 жыл бұрын
A cleaner method, in place of the nail trick, is to cut a reasonable length from a metal coat hanger and bend a curve into it. Then, you make a small hole in the wall to feed in your new stud probe. Keep feeding it to the sides, and keeping the point close to backside of your drywall, until you hit something. Mark or pinch your hanger in front of the hole. Pull the probe out and measure directly across the curve from your "mark" to the point of the probe. Finally, measure over from your hole to the edge of the stud you just found. You can use this method to very accurately find the edge of two studs, from one hole. A good trick if you can't trust that you are accurately using your stud finder, or don't want to fill your wall with hole. *Note - You should do your best to locate the void between the studs. That is so that you don't poke directly into a stud, on your first attempt, and still not know where its center is located.

I am so glad I found this video on how to use a stud finder...Yes, I have purchased...many...stud finders and yes, I was one of "those" people who thought they were a big rip off...I am an artist so I hang a lot of pictures and yes I have had to putty many many holes (I HATE DOING THAT). I am going to invest in a good stud finder ASAP. This video was one of those "AH HA" deals. Thank you so much Mr Kilted Guy!!!!!

Thank you!! I'm on a ladder trying to find the ceiling joist, my neck hurts, trying to scan over popcorn ceiling..uhh I about gave up. I would calibrate then immediately bring my left hand in to guide it over the popcorn. I switched it to deep scan and put a piece of thin cardboard over the popcorn and didn't move my hand! Found that stud! Joist, beam, rafter... I'm not sure what it's called. Piece of wood.

Chuck them out just get a really strong magnet and search for the nails/screws in the wall.
@TortureBot3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the drywall guys can hit near the edge of the stud and sometimes can even miss studs, so you're depending on their ability to find the studs when they did their job. Still works, but I'd rather find the edges of the stud at several heights, and then average down the middle with a level (finding a plumb line) especially if using large lag screws.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree and I’m going to do a video demonstrating this soon.
