I’ve heard a lot of people play fast, but there’s something different about how Simon does it. It’s so clear and articulate. It’s never just a flurry of notes… It’s a musical movement. Pure brilliance.

My favourite band has been Deep Purple pretty much since I was 4 years old and my dad first played me "Made in Japan" on LP. I'm turning 33 in about a week, and I still worship at the altar of Ritchie Blackmore. He's my favourite guitarist, no one can play guitar with such ferocity and fire like he did with Deep Purple Mk.II and III. I fully blame him for my obsession of big headstock Strats and I even wrote my dissertation about him. When I moved to London from Sweden to study music my dad gave me a copy of Made in Japan on CD so that I'd always have it with me. I cried like a baby when Blackmore walked onto the stage with Blackmore's Night when I saw them live, he has just meant so much to me in my life. What I'm coming to with this story is the fact that Simon is the perfect fit for Deep Purple. He has that fire in his playing that I've missed with Steve Morse in the band. Don't get me wrong, Steve Morse is a guitar god, but to me his playing never fit into Deep Purple's music like Ritchie did and like Simon now does. So hats off to Simon from a massive Deep Purple fan. Loved the video!

Love Steve … he saved Purple really, but I agree, Simon is a better fit for Purple. Identify with what you’re saying about Ritchie. I’m a (serious) 😀amateur guitarist and have been a Purple fan since 1970 (aged 12) when I saw them live on TV, headlining a gala concert for the opening of the Festival hall in London. Hearing Purple play Mandrake Root with Ritchie’s stage presence, sound and theatrics with the music, was overwhelming. Purple on the Machine head tour, is still the best live musical experience I’ve ever had. No one could touch Ritchie in his prime .. or Purple, as a band IMO. Blackmore’s Night had to cancel their Edinburgh show, on the night, because Candice had flu .. so I’ve yet to see them. Ritchie is almost as striking on acoustic as electric and these days I prefer when he plays acoustic. Good luck with your career.

For anyone wondering what PRS model, Simon is playing here: that's a PRS Custom 24 35th Anniversary model. It has the 85/15 pickups in it, but instead of the usual 5-way blade switch, it uses the same controls as the 408 and ''Paul's Guitar'' models.

Just a return view. The section around 1:06 about Ritchie, a strat and a Marshall and the purists, but that combination, minus Ritchie and noted live with Ritchie, being unruly, reminded me of Yngwie because that's what he does, plays a strat through Marshalls but can control the beast. That's what is so impressive about his abilities.

Absolutely amazing. Simon might be the best rock guitar player I've ever heard. So interesting to listen to and dynamic. Blinding speed that he uses sparingly, which makes it sound a lot more impactful, something that the likes of Yngwie completely miss. It’s great to hear him say how lucky he is to be in Deep Purple but they're equally lucky to have him.

I think Simon McBride might be my new favourite (since the passing of Jeff Beck). He's perfect for Deep Purple - he matches or surpasses my hero Ritchie Blackmore's accuracy, nonchalance, pick clarity, flash, and subtle melodic innovation - and even his vaudeville and variety aspects. Congratulations! I'm now wanting to see Simon's Purple live or on DVD very eagerly.

Saw them back in 73 or 74, one of the loudest shows ever (White Stripes or Killers may have been louder). I remember Lazy John Lord rocking that organ back in forth. Digital now is so much different than back in the 80's. Ladder DAC chips with less digital filters compared to 1 bit converters now with crappy digital filters just don't do it. I make a couple dacs with the legendary Philips TDA1543 DAC chip which is ladder and no digital filters (No Oversampling) and they sound incredible. Ok the Boomster may make it into my basket now. Sitting here building an amp for Barenaked Ladies. They use in-ear and ISO cabs because they can walk into any venue and get the same sound. They also feed back the live signal with several mics so they get the full feel of the crowd and their live sound. Great show, brings back some great memories of my crazy High School days riding the trolley downtown to see a show with all my friends!

Almost a surreal place to find yourself in... fascinating back story though. Fascinating. Blackmore was a ridiculously prodigious talent in his day and to be following on in those shoes is a hell of a place to find yourself. And Morse was no slouch either. The gratifying thing these days is that Purple all appear to be more settled and happy than they've been for many years which has to be a great thing.

I am really happy that Simon is talking about amp overdrive and no distortion pedal on the board. It’s always seemed a bit of an oddity to me that as guitarists we’ll wax long and hard about how only tubes will do, then we’ll put some transistor’s in front to sound like an old plexi. I know pedals can be great too and they provide a consistency when using rental gear but there is something magical about letting your amp do the distortion. Loved Simon’s playing, seems to be a top bloke too!

Such an inspiring and wonderful episode. Lovely to hear a Belfast accent too (my Dad hailed from there, so it's an accent I relish when I get the chance to hear it - one benefit of regularly donating blood is that their call centre is based there!). Always lovely to see both of you blown away by another's playing, just ace levels of humility and humanity throughout. What a joyful addition to my Friday. After Bill Bailey's demonstrating answering the door to Jehovah's Witnesses in a Metal style last night live in Tewkesbury (playing an SG through a Marshall half stack no less), this was exactly what was needed to keep my happiness on that level! Thanks guys :)

Superb episode! I saw Mr McBride when he supported Joe Satriani on the Black Swans tour but his playing here is absolutely sublime - man those toanz! Congratulations on the Deep Purple gig! I am excited for an album of Deep Purple songs written by him, it will be magnificent.

Saw deep purple last summer and wasn't aware of Simon playing then. The show was so good I had to google who was playing the guitar and been a fan ever since!
