I had the good fortune of opening for Stevie in Alaska about a couple months before the crash. I had a 56 Bassman that he liked so I got to talk to him a bit.He was very nice and no attitude..He had 2 Twin Reverbs( EV),Steel String Singer,Marshall Major w/ KT88s,Vibroverb into Vibrotone for amps. When I razzed him about over 500 watts he said smiled and said ( I like a lot of headroom) I still kick myself for not checking his amp settings but I did check his pedals. Especially the TS9 because I had one..volume a little over 3 o’clock,tone ,drive pretty much off and tone not quite 9 o’clock..For this show it was Tycobrae Octavia,TS9 and Vox wah.That’s it..Of course he sounded great….CC

Great video. Now can you do a video using one fender deluxe reverb and pedals that will give mere mortals and working class poor musicians that tone. Or at least as close as possible. Also using a digit each “Drop” pedal to tune down the 1/2 step. There’s your challenge !!

Mick, i don't think you're given enough credit for how well you direct these episodes in person and move them along. Of course there is the edit , all the things we don't see, but you carry us all along so often I hope you realise you're quite good at it. Thanks

People can like or dislike SRV's music, and that's fine. But the guy was the embodiment of a redemption story, having fallen into a hole and pulled himself out of it. He played with emotion and ferocity, and as an artist he gave you something every time he strapped it on. And for regular people like me who are just trying to figure out how to be better versions of ourselves, musically and in life, he's a good example of the human spirit. Folks who just want to talk about guitar chops / technical ability and who was the "best" guitar player - they just don't get it... and probably never will. I have many musical heroes, but SRV is unique for these reasons, in my opinion.

Never apologize for a pure emotion. I've always been happily astounded that SRV has remained such a people's hero, in spite of his virtuosity and unexpected emergence. In a hundred years he will be remembered as the conduit that re-energized the blues at a critical time when it was in decline. I cannot imagine my life without his music.

I was on a nice walk in the Texas countryside and listening to this show in headphones. I looked up at the sky when Scott was shredding. The sun was setting and there was a dove formation of clouds. I was smiling the whole time, just watching Mick smile the whole time. It was like watching kids open their presents on Christmas or least allowing full grown adults to be kids again. Experiencing pure magic, bubbling with excitement, tearing through the wrapping paper and realizing their dreams came true. I never played guitar when I was young, picking it up now when I'm older and just entering my Stevie playing phase. For me its a whole new experience. P.S. The Deluxe Reverb deserved better.

We’re in our mid 60’s from Surrey, Uk, however in the early 80’s my wife lived in Dallas TX and used to watch SRV play at Nick’s Uptown, often not packed. She remembers sitting in a chair at the front with her feet up on another chair watching him, the whole routine, behind his back, with his teeth etc. I’m still insanely jealous that he died before I could see him.

Heard SRV live in the early 80s in Joplin Mo. Was absolutely blown away. I was teaching school when he passed away. I remember getting up, heard the news, and went to school and called off classes that day, I just talked music and Stevie music. I could not cope with just going on that day; it was too much of a loss. Many of my students didn't get it, some did. And In Step was such a fantastic album: a clean, rejuvenated SRV at the very top of his game, pouring his struggles and soul out. He's still deeply missed.

I vividly remember the first time I heard SRV. I had just started graduate school in computer science at Boston University as a mid-life adventure. I was in my late 30's early 40's (I'm 75 now). It was after class, around 10:00 and I was walking back to my car on Commonwealth Ave. It was very cold, dark and wet, typical early winter in Boston. I walked past a Radio Shack and heard this guitar. I went in and listened intently to SRV playing Voodoo Child. It changed guitar forever for me.

I am 54 and I remember in the 80's seeing/hearing SRV late at night one night on TV and it was the Austin City Limits show and he took my head off! I was hooked, I went and bought Texas Flood and he is one of the main reasons why I play guitar although I was always into drums mainly! I remember that Stevie liked and played with fellow Canadian Colin James(then called Colin Munn as Stevie referred to him in interviews) and Colin is another hero of mine but I digress! SRV was just Texas Blues, he personified it and his sound was so powerful! I remember the day Stevie died, I was so depressed! One of a kind! oh and you guys nailed the SRV tone especially at roughly the 52.38 mark and onward..well done!

I remember so clearly the first time I saw SRV. It was at Reading Festival, must have been early to mid-eighties. A band had just finished one afternoon and the normal bottle fight erupted in the crowd whilst the roadies were changing sets. Bottles of everything - and I mean everything - were flying all over the place. Suddenly the sound of Voodoo Chile swept over the audience and the bottle fight immediately stopped and jaws started hitting the ground. It was one of the most electrifying sets I’ve ever seen.

Great show guys. There is something about the SRV sound that, if you get it, you never forget it. I saw Stevie live in Ludwigshafen, Germany in September 1986. This was the night he collapsed on the sidewalk and went into rehab after. I was barely playing guitar then, just started University. No idea how he did play like he did. Man, the sound the show, the sheer mastery. My friends and I were awestruck. He was a god on that stage.

What an utter treat of an episode! I think we spoke briefly about SRV when I visited for an experience day this year Mick (Euan here, hello!). It’s funny how many of these stories start with a dad’s pal because that’s true of me too! One of my dad’s pals said to him “Your boy plays guitar? Show him this!” in reference to a DVD of Live at the El Mocambo. I think it’s one of my strongest musical memories, sitting transfixed in front of the tv in awe of the visceral emotion flowing out through his guitar, and his connectedness with his instrument as if it were literally a part of him. The contrast in energy between Third Stone and Lenny in particular blew me away. What a pure soul. I think a lot of us have those “oh god, I should just quit playing… or maybe never stop until I can get somewhere close to this” moments when encountering artists like him - thankfully for me I can say I went with the latter and he’s a big part of why I’m still playing guitar 20-odd years later!

I saw him live in Dallas (saw Jimmy a bunch of times). Loudest concert maybe ever. Phenomenal player. Mind-blowing, really. Then everyone in Texas tried to play and even look like him (or it seemed like it), and no one could really get there, which was not surprising. There was a time when the SRV clone thing was out of control, and it wore everyone out, but I think that's finally wearing off, and it's great to see he is being appreciated again.
@kevinalexander448729 күн бұрын
We mere mortals may not be able to play like Stevie… but we can live like him-fully committed to whatever we’re doing. And we can play like him in the way that matters the most-play from the heart. No matter your ability, that’s all that matters.

Great episode! Scott is absolutely one of my favorite players ever.. Like many, I’ve idolized Stevie since I was a kid. One of the first things I did when moving to Austin Texas was visit Ray Hennigs Music where Stevie purchased Number 1. Ray was happy to shoot the breeze and talk about Stevie and that guitar, what a cool guy he was (RIP) Months later, I got a job managing a guitar store and met a ton of old locals who had played with or knew Stevie personally. One gent gifted me one of SRV’s blue Fender guitar picks that he acquired from a gig at Maggie Mae’s in 1983! It’s been fun living here and hearing stories first hand that were close to the man. Sometimes I’ll hop in my car and drive up the road 5 minutes to view number one and some other gear of Stevie’s which is permanently on display and be in awe!

The Vibroverb tone was incredible, I would have liked to have heard a Super in the mix since its such a great amp an associated with Stevie. That fuzz has a great driving tone on its own, think I Need one! Personally I still, after all of these years, think SRV is certainly one the greatest of all time so don’t apologize for revisiting his sound and style over and over again. Lots of great players out there but he managed to stir emotions with every note not wasting them for the sake of speed or flash to impress people. Live at the El Mocambo is a must for people who want to hear and see Stevie tearing it up early on in his career. Thanks again, keep on rockin’

I was 18 in 1980, and saw SRV live at an outdoor college graduation festival event. It was positively mind bending. People now might have trouble grasping the musical landscape of the late 70’s. Picture this, disco was finally fading out and hair metal was ascendant along side 80’s pop weirdness. Guitar wise, we had the rockabilly revival lead by Brian Setzer an the Strsy Cats, and in the rock world, of course we had the mind blowing EVH. But blues were essentially completely non existent. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came the opening lines of Pride and Joy. You have no idea how that fucking cut through EVERYTHING. I was total WTF. God it was glorious!
