We get asked lots of questions about delay pedals and how to use them creatively, so in this video we show you 10 cool things you can do with… yep… delay pedals.
It’s important to note that not all delay pedals will do all of these things. For example, Thing 5 - Changing The Sound Of Repeats -requires a pedal that has the ability to do that. Many modern multifunction / programmable delays from the likes of Strymon, Boss and so on have these features, as of course do the examples we use in the video. If nothing else, it might serve as a guide to what you might actually need or not need when choosing a new delay pedal because heaven knows that are so many on the market!
We do not cover stereo delays in this video - it’s a much less common application for most people and requires a deeper dive at some point.

Driving down the length of the country for us is akin to driving one side of a large city to the other in some parts of the States - the scales are quite dramatic, so wherever the lads are they won't seem 'that' far away. xD

Well, considering GB is 838 miles by road from furthest tip to tip-that’s totally doable in a 12-13 hour drive. And trust me, here in Alaska I can drive from Fairbanks to Homer which takes about 12 hours and is almost the same distance. And that’s still in one state and not even to the border of Canada 😂

@@johnester8421 I'm in OKC... Moved here from Houston Texas. I could drive to Florida in less time than it takes to get to el passo. Oklahoma seems so much smaller to me than you I'm Guessing. On top of that, my wife is from Connecticut, which is barely bigger than the city of Houston. The extremely short delay time you did for the Cuts Like A Knife riff is just my favourite thing! Whenever I've been playing rhythm parts in a band, while the other guitar player is doing a solo, I just kick in the delay, and it almost works as a doubler or something similar. Really fattens up the tone! Love it!

My Favorite way to address #5 (change sound of Repeats) is with my Rubberneck by DOD - it has an FX loop - and the first thing I did when I got it was put a pitch shift effect in the loop...what a cool thing! Instant arpeggiator..Each repeat is one octave higher than the last, and it sounds so neat. I only got these pedals a week before CHristmas and I’ve been geeking out on the sound of it since. Also - My favorite thing to do with delay is take the ideas for #4, (use multiple delays) and I put them in different amps. You get a great spread of rhythmic sound. Awesome.

I first learned the dotted eighth tricks from the late great Bobbe Seymour. Pedal Steel player and Nashville record producer from the golden era of Country Music. Not sure if Albert Lee was doing it before the steel players or not. Albert was also a great innovator and has been around a longtime. In pedal steel we call that the 'two for one'. We set the repeats for just one repeat. The volume pedal has to be behind the delay because you have to kill the last repeat for your phrases to end right. Do it right while sitting at the steel people think you are a speed picking demon and you are playing relatively slow. LOL. Its pretty cool that in the states a lot of effect pedal developments guitarist use were actually introduced to Nashville by steel players.

You had Matt Schofield on quite awhile back and he mentioned that he uses 2 delay pedals. The first (very short) to fatten his tone and the second for everything else. I decided I would go that way immediately. Excellent stuff!

Good morning gentlemen! I'll be off work soon, home for the weekend. I'll start it off with a great TPS and cocoa. I may even finish wiring in my pedal board. Lots of GigRig power distribution goodness! I remember falling in love with delay about 30 years ago. I was running sound for a pretty good local band. I saved up and bought a Peavey Mark IV 24 channel board and a Roland SDE-1000. I wore that thing out.

Nice video. I agree that delay can be a pedal or effect that can be difficult to determine how to use it in various situations. I have played for 30 years and have two delays on my board, a TC Electronics and a Digitech PDS 2000. As i became a better player i used delay more. Getting the 1/8 note in sync with playing, on a slap back type, is a favorite and a tape echo mildly in the back, with a longer time between the pick and repeat, is also a favorite of mine. These are basic but friendly to many styles. I learned a few tricks from your teaching and will try to implement them in my play. It is a great thought provoking pedal when making your own music.

I picked up an Alter Ego X4 a while back and I loved the super short slapback/doubling effects but I couldn’t use it in conjunction with longer delays. Ended up adding a Flashback Mini loaded with Josh Smith’s “Double Slap” TonePrint and I basically leave this on all the time. It’s subtle, but I miss it when it’s not on. It adds a bit of space and you can feel the difference in your fingers. Plus it sounds MEGA (to borrow your term, Dan) combined with the Echorec longer delays in the X4. This show has really changed and refined my sound over time, and it’s given me countless hours of really inspired playing. Cheers, fellas! 🍻

Great video guys. I have begun going Wet/Dry and like to kill the uneffected signal in the wet delay setting. This gives me such a huge delay sound! I also have a patch on my DD-500 with a 45ms delay, 0% unaffected level, 100% effect level, and only one repeat. Turn this puppy on and you instantly have a huge sound. The first time I tried it in my band, it was as much as a perceived volume boost as stepping on an actual booster pedal, although my signal tehnically wasn’t even louder.

I’m sure you guys are aware, but ChaseBliss Audio’s Thermae is a bucket brigade delay that changes delay time in a very controlled and manipulative manner in order to shift pitch! It also uses a resonant low pass filter in place of a repeats tone control, which can sound really cool!

For “Where The Streets Have No Name” Edge has 2 SDD-3000’s going. One in 1/4 note mixed quite low with longer feedback. The other is dotted 1/8 mixed quite higher but with less feedback. The Diamond Counter Point Delay actually has a setting for this called “galloping eighths” I believe. Also worth noting, with 2 delays setup like Edge, the modulation sounds much bigger and wider even with depth and rate set relatively low due to the 2 delays interacting with each other.

Lads. Love delays. Love TPS. Happy times. Dan just very briefly touched (33:54) on a very important use of the delay that is to color your sound. That deserves to have its own category (category number 11). You mentioned the Echorec, but what about the Korg SDD-3000. The SDD-3000 is an awesome pedal (that you should bring up one of these days) which is the favorite of such sonic masters as: The Edge, Daniel Lanois and Dan’s buddy, Mr. Ed O’Brien from Radiohead. It does an awesome delay and makes you sound better and cut through the mix. Keep up the great work and bring the SDD to the show one of these days.

Can i just thank you guys, you inspired me to nab an old practice amp off my brother so i'm now running my own Wet/Dry setup in the comfort of my own home using 10 and 20 watt amps using the output split from my UX1 with the tone paths split left and right with the delay and modulation only going to a single amp and the sound that fills the room is immense. Great video, I’ll be rewatching it again once my new pedal comes in because as it so happens, I just bought my first delay! It’s a Strymon Time Line. Free the Tone just seemed too complex and exhausting to program. I was surprised when it made it’s way onto Mick’s board but alas, I felt a simpler route was necessary for me. I love self-oscillation, I picked the tc electronic echobrain for its oscillation character (a lot like the Boss delay ala Fitter Happier). Do tape delays self-oscillate in a fundamentally different way to transistor or dsp delays? The answer might decide me on what echo pedal I get, torn between a few different ones and no one seems to test their self-oscillations.

Late to the party as ever, I loved their episode of TPS. I’m a long time lover of echo and delay, but truth be told, I’m not very good at using it. I’m a bit better at it having watched this show. What I’m particularly grateful for is the advice on using short delay times, from Slapback on down. I’m finding new inspiration in these tones and for that I’m forever grateful. Great show as usual!!! Your pedalboard show with Matt Schofield in JUL 2017 was the first time I conceptualized use of the very short delay. He described it as "thickening" his tone if memory serves. Then he added a longer delay on top of it. At the time I only owned a carbon copy, I have since added a tape echo and am considering buying a belle epoch deluxe--down the rabbit hole we go. What sort of feedback level (i.e. number of repeats) do you use on that really short delay setting?

Great episode ! As a delay addict, I really enjoyed that (I have an Eventide TimeFactor and L6 M5 on one board, a rotating cast of single delay pedals on the other). Couple of remarks: - a great counter-example of tape delays not being in sync with tempo is Blackmore's intro and main riff to Mistreated, he has the repeats set to 1/4 note (and pretty loud). Live, it's pretty obvious the whole band is playing to the tempo set on the Echoplex. Another example being Tommy Iommi on Heaven and Hell's solo, which has a similar thing (pretty loud 1/4 note repeats)...though by the time it might have been the MXR rack delays he's been using through the 80s and 90s; - the classic The Edge/Lanois delay thing actually is two delays, one set at 16th notes into another set at dotted 8th, it's very obvious on Pride (In The Name of Love) where you can hear the cascading delays. The interesting thing being, as is obvious on U2's live performances, the whole band is playing to the tempo set on the delays (you can hear the Edge hitting a muted note, then Larry Mullen Jr giving tempo on the hi-hat based on that); - an earlier example of dotted 8ths is David Gilmour using them all over The Wall (Another Brick In The Wall Pt1, Run Like Hell)...the panning delays on Another Brick In The Wall Pt1 sound incredible ! - the short delay/doubling trick works especially great in W/D, I remember John Petrucci demonstrating that on his instructional video back in the early 90s. Great alternative to doubling/micropitch effects (which are more of the same idea anyway).

When Dan said "Belle Epoch", It sounded, to my ears, like he had a new delay pedal called the "Belly Flop". If I made pedals, I would not delay in getting started on the Belly Flop, version 1.

What I have found out by watching just a couple of your delay pedals videos is. That i have a Ferrari or Lamborghini of a Delay Pedal & basically I have been using it as idk let's say in America we have what we call a big wheel when we are children & are lucky enough to get one. Anyways I hope that this shows you just how much you guys have & are continuing to help me & many other's. To understand just the basics of what & how to actually use these "Golden Bricks" of effects pedals. I finally found those little Mackie mixers in the barn and now I can get back on my experiment using hoses and microphones to emulate an Echorec. 150 foot of hose is close enough to 133 milliseconds for me. So far I discovered that 100 foot was pretty much just a dirty version of what I dial out of my Dunlop EP-103, but I want to try smaller tubing, &c., to see how far I can take it. Each mic will run to its own amplifier, but I'm short on Celestions so I will go ahead and keep one going through a high pass and into a Goodmans Midax. The last one I guess. I don't think any of y'all have to feel bad about excessive boardage.

Great video, I can't vouch for this enough. When I was young my staple inspiration was Slash, Eric Clapton in the 90s and many more that had multiple delays at the core of their tone!! back then they denied using pedals much and the secret sauce myths. I believe most of that was delay. They used it to thicken up there mids, get some defined grit going on and the short delay tuning really helps focus the sound to mix. Increadable stuff

One big mistake I used to do is have the delays too loud. I learned later to turn them down. Also the first one is amazing advice. So definitely watching to the end.

Your classic phaser is a modulated short delay, so you'll be able to do some variations on what is in this video at the least. Depending on what phaser you have of course.

Brock Barr Phasers (and Vibes) are actually a modulated filter effect, you’re thinking of Chorus & Flanger with the delay thing.

Been using the delay in the OX as a wet/dry/wet engine into two small amps and I gotta say, the delays (mod and verbs too!) are killer and the interface is great as well. I know you guys are fans of the WD and WDW setup......give the OX a go and really explore the potential......using little 10” speaker sims with speaker breakup and tape delays is just outta this world tones! Thanks for the ultra short delay tip......sounds fantastic and I can’t stop using it!!!!!

Oops, Off topic. When you were saying last week how you don’t like Fender’s maple fingerboards Mick, it reminded me that you gave me pause for thought a couple of months ago. When Fender brought out their Player series earlier this year, the butterscotch Telecaster caught my eye, so I went to try one out and found it to be a canny buy except for the awful gloop on the fingerboard. However, remembering you said some while ago that you scraped the lacquer off your white maple Strat, I bit the bullet and bought it. Over the next four days, using scraper blades, I took the fretboard down to the wood then treated it with Tung oil. Honestly, the difference is amazing and even though it is a “budget” Fender, it feels and plays great. I can’t walk past it without picking it up for a plonk. Thanks for that Mick. TPS inspires in all different ways. Oh, and here's to a happy and successful Noo Year!

I've read that some people don't go that far, and just use steel wool as you would on rosewood, something you normally don't do on finish, to make it less sitcky. I personally love poly on everything though :)

The treated maple finish is key to the sound. Stripping it off then you might as well have a rosewood.

@@davids9192 Cheers David. Disagree tho', it's the Maple that makes the difference, not the finish. I have had 3 rosewood Telecasters over the many years of my life and the two woods have totally different tonal characteristics, which is why I was tempted to check out the Player in the first place. This of course is only my view. Thanks for the comment though. Discussion is good.
