Welcome to the show! It is with some surprise that Daniel and I turn to one another, sigh, and admit that neither he nor me have ever owned a Nobels ODR-1. Legion are our comrades who have proffered the humble green overdrive as a mighty beast, fit to fight in the arena alongside any of the more legendary brands. Yet we eschewed their enthusiasm, incorrect in our assumption that the world really doesn’t need another overdrive pedal. Alas, this really isn’t just another overdrive pedal and never has been.
With more open minds and a brace each of classic amps and OD pedals, we venture onto the plains of discovery to find the Nobels indeed noble among its peers. Let tone commence…

I have played with a strat and tube screamer for most of my life, and while I can see that it fattens up the strat, I just have never resonated with it. Finally just replaced it with the ODR1 on my board today and am immediately enthralled.

One of my favorite combos: a mid-gain ODR-1 into a low-gain Rat. Thick distortion with clarity--love it for shoegazey walls of sound. When I really want something crushing, I send those two into a Big Muff.

The Rat is one of my very favorite sleepers as an overdrive - with low gain and the filter high, it's great for fusiony tones - and the ODR-1 here is reminding me sometimes of Larry Carlton's tweed Deluxe sound, so the articulacy of the ODR-1 --> the thickness and sweetness of the Rat is probably great.

Wow, just dug in my gig bag and found my original 90's ODR-1. Picked it up used about 12 years ago for 40 bucks. I always loved the soft clipping, one of my favorite overdrive pedal tones. Kind of shocked to see what the 90's ODR-1s are going for now! Time to put it back in use, was using the dirty channel on my tube amp for quite a while.

I always assumed you guys knew about the Nobels. Out here in Nashville, it’s everywhere. My favorite take on the ODR-1 was the Visual Sound (now Truetone) Open Road. Such an underrated pedal. Anyone who plays a Fender and hangs on the bridge pickup, it’s your pedal. Absolute magic with Jazzmasters.

Great show. I agree wholeheartedly when Mick mentions that "it's all about context". Only The Pedal Show is able to bring that to us pedal lovers. Just came across this episode. Don’t know how I missed this. I’m one of the 700,000 guitarist In Nashville. As soon as I got here about 20 years ago, ppl were telling me to get a Nobels ODR1. I now have 2 versions on my board, an ODR mini and a Wampler Paisley Deluxe, which has Brian’s version of the ODR-S on the right side. The Low cut is a must in the studio. Because 10 out of 10 times the engineer is cutting most of the lows anyway. Especially in the dense recordings we make here these days.

Exquisite episode. Eventhough I dont use a Fender nor Vox, just hearing the magic those Ods can add in Mick and Dan's tasteful tweaking is in my humble opinion what TPS does best: showcasing pedal's magic tone/uses with tasty guitar riffs. Keep rocking.. and yes there more great ODs to be discovered yet. Im lucky enoough to have a few magic ones myself and none are a Klon nor Tubescreamer. Each player has different taste. All is good.

Too many demos start low, play, add a bit, play, repeat. Who wants to know every shade of a pedal? I just want to know what it sounds like at its best and a bit about why, and how it reacts to different guitars is way more informative than how it differs when the gain is at 2 o clock or 5 o clock.

In a world of your great episodes this stands out. It was fun to see you both taken away by this pedal - around forever - but never something you needed before right now. These were tremendous sounds. I had on ODR-1 mini for a bit, but I struggled - but it is b/c my amp is so open. I changed my rectifier and phase inverter tubes and am using a Mullard reissue of EL84's that have more give. My power section won't drive full out, but it does get some good compression now, so I'll have to try another ODR-1. I am about to change where I am using my Analogman modded BD2 and trying what Dan said. Loved it. You both played amazingly well and did very musical stuff. See you Monday!

Mick did exactly what I did, he turned the spectrum down to one and it sounded weak so he turned it up. Bur the magic comes from turning it down and boosting the level up, not that it doesn't sound great the other way round! As always, love the playing from both of you, and Dan's technical knowledge is priceless for me.

I got the Wampler Belle. Its a clone of the Nobels Overdrive, but with some tweaks to make it more versatile. Brilliant pedal.

Blues Driver and ODR1 to the absolute rescue (special shout-out to bluesbreaker & timmy) for all those of us who haven't found the right applications for our klons and TSes. The brand new stock versions of these have the quality clean tones you'd expect from a tumnus deluxe or morning glory. Bardic Audio Devices in TX built me an ODR circuit with a three-way pre-clipping bass toggle, and the ability to switch the hard and soft clipping at both points in the circuit (ge/mosfet soft, si/LED hard). It shines the best as a bass fuzz. My version of the Blues Driver (an old digitech with added bass and treble controls) stands in for the gain range you'd want from a Rat/OCD/Riot. D&M do a really great job demonstrating how sweet the combination of the two can be.

Thanks for the great tones! I've been playing almost 50 years (!) and have had many OD pedals in that time. A few years back I saw a review of the ODR MIni and got one. Last year I purchased my first Tubescreamer (believe it or not!) - the TS-9 Mini. I stack the TS into the ODR into either a Princeton or Fillmore 50. The combination of the 2 pedals is the most GLORIOUS sound ever!

I've had the odr1 for 6 months, and could not be happier. It took several pedals to the pawn shop. Put it with a tumnus deluxe and set both on the lighter gain side, and you have heaven together. As far as the mid hump, I use an mxr 6 band to achieve as needed, usually around +5 to 8 dB on the 400 and 800 bands. Also using a Joyo Am Sound for added bass and light drive as needed.. The remote portion the odr1 is for turning the bass cut on and off with a footswitch btw, so makes setting for humbuckers or single coils on the fly in live settings a breeze. This peddle plays very well with others, has its own sound, and I feel like it's a mildly scooped version of a BD crossed with a TS. Just lovely as always D & M, cheers from KY.

My first "boutique" OD was the Guthrie Trapp OD fro JRAD, their interpretation of the ODR. With a strat and clean blackface, it's the perfect bridge PU drive. Great show once again mates!

@@MrAwesomeSaucesome Mine is the older black one. A bit more gain on tap than the newer ones (I'm told). Keeping the gain below 11oclock is very satisfying. "Chewy" or "saggy" low end, just the right bite up top and wonderfully dynamic. My only gripe was it's a pedal that really sounds best LOUD to push your preamp, similar to how you might setup a klon. With a tele and Deluxe Reverb, it's the prefect drive. With a strat, really need more mids than it can push.

Bukovac says that every time he hears a guitarist disappear in a live mix, it’s always on a Fender guitar. I think that’s the function of TS circuits: sort of a live-gig ‘ass saver’ for Fender guitars into Fender amps. Reversing the scoop. That said… every time you switch to the ODR, the sound is somehow more ‘charismatic.’ More satisfying and fun to listen to. Wild.

If Bukovac said it, it’s true and that is not sarcasm. He is a tone, pedal, guitar and overall music genius. The man can play as fast as anyone about there but chooses to be musical. Sometimes he’ll throw a fast lick or run but he’s so damn musical and creative it boggles my mind. Man I love Uncle Larry. I always take his advice. He’s definitely someone you can trust having played on something like 600 or more albums. Plus he just has that ear where he can hear something and figure it out.

As for Fender backline, the notion that it doesn't cut through a live mix just runs contrary to the over 30years of playing and working with actual pros that I have in me. 🍀ain't talking about the cheapo things they build for bedrooms, but mate, even a bloody Champ will sit proud in a mix. Am astonished to even be having this conversation. As for Strats... Yeah I really have trouble picking Gilmour, Clapton, SRV, Jimi, out of a mix....RIDICULOUS

As is so often true - the beautifully balanced, smooth ODR-1 sounds a lot better in isolation, but the more aggressive sounding, honkier BD-2 would probably cut better in a band situation.

The exact same conclusions when I switch all my od's and fuzz on in just the right combinations - when Dan laughed, I was giddy at exactly the same moment, being brought to the same ‘high’ as they kept adding on the drives, having the exact same feeling. I bought an ODR1 a few months ago. As a gain pedal heretic, I do like it. I used it as an always on with virtually zero drive. It’s since even replaced by the Strymon Compadre, which set right, just seems to s ex up the amp a treat. The ODR does the same, even though they are functionally different.

I've never been a tube screamer guy... if it was green I avoided it all together.... wow did I assume completely wrong about the ODR-1. I watched this video, and went and bought one. I've plugged it into multiple amps in my collection with multiple different guitars.... I absolutely LOVE the ODR-1!!!! Also very happy I didn't spend the money on the Waza Blues Driver, because it was on my list. The ODR-1 was the exact sound I looking for.

Don't discount the Tube Screamer just because it has been around so long and everyone seems to have one. A Tube Screamer can boost the ODR-1 or the Bllues Driver into the Lead EQ every live guitarist needs badly. To me the Tube screamer is a naturally good EQ curve for lead guitar.

Thank you for the excellent demo! I gave away my original ODR-1 because it made everything muddy when the amp was turned up. The bass cut is exactly what this pedal needed. Just ordered a new 30th Anniversary with bass cut to give it a test drive. I use Strats and Teles into Deluxe Reverbs and Voxes. Very rarely an LP, es175 or a Riviera with minis. This video was almost a perfect fit for my interests. Keeping my fingers crossed the new one works out.

@@MrXNITROx I’ve been on an overdrive quest recently. My 2 favorites so far are the MXR Timmy and Wampler Pantheon (think Blues realer/KOT), but I just got a Wampler Belle which is the ODR circuit with an active Bass control and an asymmetrical clipping switch. The Pantheon is incredibly versatile - goes from clean boost to the edge of a full-on distortion pedal. The Timmy is versatile as well but it’s useful as a “transparent” overdrive to my ears with lots of clarity and there isn’t as much potential gain available. Timmy also adds noticeable compression - not bad but it’s always there. I’ve only just started fooling around with the Belle. At first I was asking myself “Why?” This episode of TPS has answered that question in spades. Before, I put the Belle in front of the Pantheon and found several really happy places. ETA this is into a Princeton Reverb set clean.

An old bandmate of mine, very talented frontman/guitarist absolutely swears by this pedal, and didn't suggest but told me to buy one of these when I was starting to rebuild my rig and get back into a band setting. I put my LP through it into a cranked 65' Fender, bridge pickup, and understood immediately. The drive just punches through the mix, it just sings. I don't even like overdrive pedals, I normally boost with an eq, but this thing in front of it just sets the amp on fire. I use the level primarily but the drive, which even though I only like amp gain, still has great character, and I like to occasionally mix some of it in for some Steve Jonesish effects.

Into the Deluxe, it really did sound like an old Bassman cranked up and overdriving. Nice to hear it with the AC15, as I'm moving on a couple of amps and replacing them with old faithful Vox. The AC15 is home base, time to go home :) The Nobels made the Vox sound like just more Vox! Great stuff. I believe my Paisley Deluxe has one side based on an ODR-S? It's ODR-something, I know that. It's a great pedal.

I’ve just got the Ltd Edition ODR-1 in Green Sparkle and I’m so impressed! I’ve got the Wampler Belle which is great, very clever to fit so many features into a mini pedal. Although both sound nearly identical I’m definitely keeping both. I’m hoping to get the Boss BD-2w to replace my old BD-2 as that’s a different beast all together in my opinion.

Man... my favorite OD pedal of all time. Had an original 90's one on my board for 20+ years. The only reason I ever got rid of it is for the new Nordland ODR-C. The same circuit with better components, designed and hand made by the original ODR designer... now with extra controls for: low cut, mid, and compression makeup controls. It's the only thing better than an original. Perfect for beefing up single coils, then throw a humbucker at it and use the low cut. Sooooo good.

I just received my Nobles ODR1.I played it thru my Deluxe Reverb and wow I was absolutely blown away 😳 this is the most amazing thing I've ever owned. It sounds great on this video but in real life in my studio I just stared into the ether for a few moments as it vibed into my soul I hit an E with heavy vibro kicking and the whole room just throbbed.Go get one of these .Seriously forget every other pedal it is no joke.

I just got the Nobels ODR-1 and I just found this. Running it through my Victory Sherriff 22 with a Captur X and the volume at 2 o'clock. I read a few people don't think the Sherriff is a good pedal amp but the ODR-1 sounds great. The ODR-1 has been a great buy and not too expensive either, it's a lot cheaper then some overdrives I have. Thanks Nobels, a happy owner :) Thanks also to Dan and Mick for this video.
