This video really shows you how crucial getting a great basic tone from the amp is. Higher quality amps make a lot of things sound so much better, you can really get away with using less expensive OD's to push things. I wasted a lot of money on amazing pedals and paired them up with less than stellar amp platforms and they didn't perform well. The amp is the most important part of your tone!

@klangobjekt Жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. Most amps sound pretty good, but the speaker is the weak link. Stock speakers have tons of reinforcement on them. That is necessary to prevent teens from blowing speakers and the consequent warranty returns. Those speakers sound terrible. Don't blame the amp itself. I have bought stellar amps that sounded crappy out of the box and they did not sound better after breaking in the speaker.

He’s naturally gifted, no question about it. I’ve probably got 20,000 more hours of playing and practicing time in than he does, (I’m 25 years older than him, so, it stands to reason) yet he is 10 times the player I am. He just has a natural gift for rhythm and melody that can’t be taught or practiced. It’s IN him. Lucky guy. I love his playing.
@alanhaynes418 Жыл бұрын
@@zenlandzipline Having taught sax and flute myself for many decades, there are two vital ingredients for being really good: Talent and Hard Work. And I would say that hard work is slightly more important.
@zenlandzipline Жыл бұрын
@@alanhaynes418 agree, but I will add this: “hard work” is a subjective concept. What may be “hard” to somebody with average or below average musical ability, might actually be easy to someone who is naturally gifted. Putting in 8 hours a day of practice and learning isn’t really that hard to do, if the practice and learning come easy to someone. Ask a virtuoso guitar player if their first 10 years of practice and learning were “hard”, and they will most likely say “well, I put in many hours of practice, but it really didn’t seem that hard. It didn’t seem like hard work. It was just just what I did. I enjoyed playing and practicing my instrument”. There are of course people with average musical ability who worked extra hard, put in more hours, and became very proficient on their instrument. But there is a difference between being proficient, and being someone who just sounds melodic and musical every time they pick up their instrument, and making it look natural and easy as they play. Rabea would sound musical on just about any instrument you hand to him, right off the bat, and would become proficient at it in half the time as somebody with average musical ability.

@@zenlandziplineyeah I agree with you I played for 25 years yet I can't improvise nearly as good as Rabea, I have developed better speed over the years, but varying phrasing and timing like Rabea does is extremely hard if not impossible to learn, I end up doing similar scale runs over and over, I think you need to have something in your brain that just gets it like an instinct, he's like channeling something and just letting it flow while I feel I need to try so much harder to play anything original or even musical. All roads start and lead back to Boss 👌 I’ve bought and sold more boutique pedals than I care to mention, but I’ll never sell my Boss pedals. I think it’s part nostalgia, part core tone palette. I think the nature of boutique builders is to instil what they consider an improvement on the original source, but in doing so they often over complicate or stray from the original source. None of that is a negative of course, and I’m a repeat offender of wasting money on ridiculously over priced gear, but I do think I suffer from ‘tone fatigue’ when it comes to going down the pedal rabbit hole. Too many options kills the musical muse I find. When that happens I often find myself going back to basics. MXR DynaComp> SD-1 > BD-2 > MXR 95 > DD-3 …. That’ll get me back to my core tone in minutes. Great episode 👌🎸🤟

This is the second time Rabea has chosen the Blues Driver in an OD shootout, so I think it's time to call this settled. It was also in Classic mode, so you can get that sound with a regular BD-2, which is what I've used for several years. Lee was right about the stigma around Boss pedals. For a long time, I tried to find another OD that I liked enough to take the Blues Driver off my board. Now, it's just always going to be part of my sound. I also heard the BD getting a bit flubby on the low frequencies. I own the BD-2w and it's a one of those "never selling that one" pedals. Now I'm looking for a Tumnus 😁 Edit: I'd like to add that what Rabea said about the interaction between the pedal and the amp is important. I've had pedals that I felt never reached the potential I first saw in them no matter how I set them. But then I made a seemingly minor change to the amp setting and it was "Wow! Where did that come from?" sort of thing. This is what makes shopping for pedals so much fun and yet so frustrating.

BD-2 never leaves my pedal board. Such a great pedal!

My Tumnus Deluxe became one of my favorite pedals soon after I got it. Makes my overall sound quality improve no matter what else is on. Great pedal.

Great video! I think you should give Rabea control of the toggling with the foot switch. That way he can bounce back and forth as he likes mid lick. :)

Wow, I was thinking throughout the whole video that I was going to suggest doing a multi-round winner final. And it happened, haha. Great stuff, awesome playing by Rabea as always 😍

The Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive and the Wampler Tumnus were my favorites. I didn't like the Blues Driver as much as I thought I would. Too dark for my tastes. I like more of a midrange presence. I think the SD-1 would have done better if it had come later in the contest.

Anderton’s, I’m a Mancunian expat living in the States. While we haven’t any of your shops here (to my profound annoyance, as I love your relationship with TC pedals, which are my top favourite pedal manufacturer), you have THE BEST gear demo videos of any music shop ANYWHERE. If you told me when I were 16 that I’d be voluntarily SEARCHING FOR ADVERTS TO WATCH at 40, I’d have told ye to do one, cos a) I ain’t never gonna live to be 40, and 2) I loathe adverts with such a passion that I cut out all television at age 15 just to get them off mi back. This was in the NINETIES, before I had INTERNET. So at 15 I’d voluntarily cut miself off from most entertainment-save for music and my guitar.) Anyroad, you get the point, I think. Here I am: 40-a little less jaded,but just as mad-and this is what I now do for fun. Life is so very strange. Love to you lot, though: Cap’n, Rabea, Danish Pete, and (sometimes) Chappers… -Rip

Duke of tone is incredibly articulate with beautiful tones, my fav. Then the Tumnus, great pedal and best klon clone. That said, my fav EVER overdrive pedal is the ANGRY DRIVER by Boss (blues driver + GHS angry charlie... who is a marshall guvnor clone) and lots of chain options, the most versatile overdrive pedal ever.

Woo! Made it to the end!! Great video and a worthy winner. Now ... how to make some room for one on the already-packed pedalboard ....

Rabea is quite the player. I could listen to him for hours. He definitely has a Nuno vibe to his playing. That Tumnus V2 sounded amazing, IMO.

If you know, Rabea also plays drums and I believe he started on drums first... like Nuno :)

Let's be honest; we're all winners from this shootout. But my three favorites were 1. Rabea 2. Sire S7 (which I bought after the first Andertons review) 3. The BD-2 (I've got the OD-200, but the BD-2 is my fave on that)

Don't tell him what his current favourite is, just make him choose between two sounds. It's anchoring him clearly.

I absolutely love these long videos and Rabea and the Captain are like old friends at this point. Keep up these shootouts! Also, I think Sire has become THE brand to beat at this price range.

The Boss Blues drive was on the custom mode all the time though. Waza exclusive and perhaps it should have been on standard mode as you did not have the waza version of the Super overdrive. That custom mode is great too. Turns was awesome too, JHS as well

I think I'd have the top 2 drives and use them together. The Blues Driver has that sweet clean boost sound when you roll off the volume, and the Tumnus has the mid range but clear bark of overdrive.

Agreed, except I'd use the Tumnus Dlx for that sweet EQ.

The pedals were great, I'm definitely looking into a BD now and already have a Tumnus I love, but if nothing else I think this video highlights that aside from being a monster player, how much a great amp elevates the tone of your sound. Everything sounded good and Rabea's hands took it to another level.

I have the JHS 3 Series screamer and I absolutely love it. I put a green sticker on mine instead of covering it with green sharpie though, lol. I haven't heard a bad pedal from JHS's 3 series yet and they don't kill your wallet either. I think they absolutely nailed it for their

you guys should do Boss OD-200 where Rabea tries to make it sound like and against some of the most coveted boutique pedals. The OD-200 has kicked every other drive pedal of my board - would be great to see what the pros at Andertons think of it. I think it is criminally under rated.
@mcleanmachut Жыл бұрын
I've got the older OD-20 on my backup board and use it exclusively for Blues Driver setting lol

I’ve always been a huge BD2 fan, the noballs ODR has a room feel to it, the morning glory has that mid thing I love and clarity. Those are my favs. The revival drive seems the most tweakable to get most of what I would need if I only had one.
