As an electrical engineer, I think it would be good to explain why a daisy chain power supply is not a good choice. Even if you have an amazingly clean, well-built supply, the problem occurs when the pedals are wired in parallel (daisy chained). Each pedal will generate some amount of electrical noise... some more than others. So the clean power is compromised immediately, and other pedals then get noise on their input power. Isolated just means each pedal gets a separate run that has regulation, filter caps, etc. in a star topology. Dan's absolutely right, avoid the daisy chain style. It's not a diss on any manufacturer, nor being an audio snob; it's just electrical wisdom. Cheers!

Around the 5:20 mark I both laughed and cried when Mick mentioned his need for two overdrive pedals and a delay. This was me 3 years ago, when I picked up guitar again after many years of not playing at all. Why oh why then have I just recently needed to upgrade my pedalboard to something which now takes up half the floor space in what I laughingly refer to as my “home office”, and why do I now own 10 dirt pedals and 3 delay pedals?????!!!! It’s all because of you MIck and Dan, it’s all your fault! What have you done to me? On a serious note, some great points here. I can’t emphasise enough how much having a pedalboard, proper isolated power supplies, good cables etc. has changed my approach towards playing. As someone who only pursues guitar as a hobby, I often have limited time for playing and having everything set up ready to just power up, plug in and play has really enabled those precious moments with the instrument to be moments of creative fun, rather than repeated moments wasted setting things up and then losing interest and becoming despondent. Thank you guys, keep up the great work.
@WinterHillTube5 жыл бұрын
Always found it useful to have a multimeter on hand, too. Continuity for testing cables and isolation of power supply grounds - before you start jamming ;) - and DC voltage for double checking correct voltage and polarity. Not necessarily expensive and cuts out exposing pedals to inevitable goofs.

My first pedal board was the top of a school desk that I found in a dumpster, cut to the size and shape of a “replacement” SKB soft case I got for cheep. My dad jerry-rigged me some power distribution using a single Dunlop power supply I had, a piece of circuitboard he had lying around in the garage, and a bunch of wires and connectors. Essentially an over engineered and unsightly daisychain which we literally screwed to the board. I wish I had pictures of that thing, but alas, these were the days before cell phone cameras... The pedals, I believe, were a Crybaby, a Boss Mega Distortion, a Boss Bass Overdrive (cool sounds to be had with a guitar), PH3 Phaser, BF2 Flanger, and a DD5 Delay, with a QuikTune tuner which only tuned to standard tuning. I was so proud of that monstrosity...

My black magic zen drive has a level and gain the seem to interact with each other differently than a normal drive pedal. For me to get the “right” sound I find the overall level being way above unity. I’ve mitigated this with a boost for when I don’t have the zen drive active. This leaves me feeling like I am tap dancing. What other ways are there to address the differences without making me adjust the levels on the pedal? Thanks for another great show.

One great trick is to use the pedalboard tape but DON'T take off the paper backing and glue the tape to the pedal. Instead, cut the small squares, poke a hole in the tape then use the pedal base screws through the holes. Then you don't have the glue stuck on an expensive pedal or have to worry about those rubber bottoms. Just poke a small hole, not one large enough that the scree head easily pulls through

@@mattgilbert7347 that sounds like a cracking plan matey, love mine. Been playing the Marshall Origin recently, but my AC15c1 was the sound I'd been searching for for a long time... That and my RAT is what I've always had in my head, the Origin was because I wanted the vintage style Marshall lead tones, which its great for, and cuts through a mix woth another loud guitarist, but now I'm the only player thinking about just getting my sound back...

Don’t forget the space on top of your amp, for pedals that can go into an effects loop. 😄 Get a few more that way.

After discovering your show a few months back, it quickly became clear that I needed to get rid of my old multi-effect, which has served me well on countless gigs for many years, and build my own pedalboard. I finished this project about 2 weeks ago, so this episode came a bit too late. I'm really happy that I managed it pretty well without the beginners guide ;-). And the most important thing of this whole story: the sound is so incredibly better that I want to play all day long!! Thank you guys!

Great info. Thanks. Would you allow me to add something? In building my own pedalboard with a 10 output power supply, I found using a label-maker to identify each power lead (i.e. the name of the pedal it powered) at the power supply end was really helpful if a pedal died. Instead of chasing each power lead down, you can instantly see which power lead plug you need to check. Just a little thing, and a bit OCD, but worthwhile, especially in a gig situation.

Thanks, guys! After playing for 23 years, you’ve inspired me to build my very first pedalboard. I used Mick’s wood design. Love the info! I actually watched this video twice. Keep up the great work and, yes, entertainment!

I really enjoyed that you used both a home built board & a store bought board. I was a plywood warrior for years and built many a board......never with "room for another pedal" lol. Great vid fellas, well done as always!

Me again. So I took Mick's advice even before Mick gave the advice. I saved for over a year to get my guitar and 1st pedals. I built my own pedals and I continue to save and buy Dan's GigRig stuff, and my board always sounds better than others who use odd Power supplies or other fancy stuff. But I do wish this video was out 3 years ago. : ) P.S. Stay true to your convictions guys, those convictions may cause some to disagree or abandon your channel, but they matter to a lot of folks and I think many of them need to be said. You are a different kind of guitar teacher online. As you grow, so can we. P.S.S. Dan's right, loud is coming back!!

Ya! I've had one on my board for a couple of years, and it blows me away every time I use it. Mine came before the external switches were available, so it requires a degree of jiggery-pokery to make any adjustments. I do it gladly.

Wondering, was that slow echoing jam at the end with the delay pedal made up or was that from a real song?

First board was 12 pedals on a keyboard drawer flipped upside down. The damn thing was so big I couldn't find a bag for it. Used to wrap it in a blanket to take it to gigs.

Hey fellas, sorry if I’m being pedantic and you already know this, but you can reuse the evidence audio cable ends. Mick’s bag of “offcuts and too short cables” can be reused, it’s really the connectors that run the bill up. As long as you don’t screw them on super hard you can just unscrew them and remake a cable - I’ve only had the copper core break off in the connector like twice out of maybe 25 cables I’ve remade over the years.

Could I suggest putting a seal coat on the raw timber board.....much better adhesion .....
@Fr3ddyUK5 жыл бұрын
I was thinkig the same. Using something unusual, which is superglue. You can get large bottles of thin, medium and thick. Which is great for wood, as it acts as a wood filler and sealer at the same time. So those strips will stick really well. :)

This is probably the most important video TPS has made to date. It probably contains a lots of information that the majority of viewers find basic and obvious, but at the end of the day this is the crossroads that every pedalboard player comes to at some point. If a player gets the fundamentals right, the rest becomes a lot easier. Well done guys. Good work!

As a lefty I will certify that being left handed and having to run your cables back across your feet is incredibly annoying. So much so that I added clips along the edge of my board and use a cable with a 90 degree jack so that I can attach it to my board and not have my cables run by my feet.
@ElliottCustomLures5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, in your case, I'd just use a patch bay on the lh side of the board, and run cables under the board to keep it looking clean. But... I have issues and get ocd with my boards.
