@@jonathanstewart5269 Honestly, I can definitely see Mick's Version being a first pedalboard, if you were to inform yourself beforehand about how a pedalboard is supposed to look like/be made. A "well-informed" first pedalboard, so to speak. If you were to go in completely blind, however, then you obviously also wouldn't be able to make it as nice as Mick's, even.

A quick thought on attaching velcro or dual lock tape on the bottom of Boss pedals. If you unscrew the base plate, you can turn it over and screw it back on with the inner surface facing out. Then you can put your velcro on without any trouble.

My first pedal board was the top of a school desk that I found in a dumpster, cut to the size and shape of a “replacement” SKB soft case I got for cheep. My dad jerry-rigged me some power distribution using a single Dunlop power supply I had, a piece of circuitboard he had lying around in the garage, and a bunch of wires and connectors. Essentially an over engineered and unsightly daisychain which we literally screwed to the board. I wish I had pictures of that thing, but alas, these were the days before cell phone cameras... The pedals, I believe, were a Crybaby, a Boss Mega Distortion, a Boss Bass Overdrive (cool sounds to be had with a guitar), PH3 Phaser, BF2 Flanger, and a DD5 Delay, with a QuikTune tuner which only tuned to standard tuning. I was so proud of that monstrosity...

After watching this I guess I'll break down and buy a bag of zip ties for my temporary boards and use them instead of rubber bands...
@JYelton
@JYelton 5 жыл бұрын
As an electrical engineer, I think it would be good to explain why a daisy chain power supply is not a good choice. Even if you have an amazingly clean, well-built supply, the problem occurs when the pedals are wired in parallel (daisy chained). Each pedal will generate some amount of electrical noise... some more than others. So the clean power is compromised immediately, and other pedals then get noise on their input power. Isolated just means each pedal gets a separate run that has regulation, filter caps, etc. in a star topology. Dan's absolutely right, avoid the daisy chain style. It's not a diss on any manufacturer, nor being an audio snob; it's just electrical wisdom. Cheers!

Always found it useful to have a multimeter on hand, too. Continuity for testing cables and isolation of power supply grounds - before you start jamming ;) - and DC voltage for double checking correct voltage and polarity. Not necessarily expensive and cuts out exposing pedals to inevitable goofs.

My first pedalboard I made 25 years ago and was a piece of scrap plywood with rubber feet screwed to it underneath. The pedals fixed to the board with cableties through holes I drilled in it. It had a Sovtek Green Muff, a MXR Dist+, a 70’s Small Stone, a Gollmer 60’s trem, a boss DD-3 and two boss compressors (cs-2+cs-3), one used as boost, one used as ”negative” boost/instant volume drop. The was also an off board Cry Baby first in the chain. All powered with separate 9V adapters (the Sovtek and the MXR i had hardwired adapters to the battery clip wires, as I always forgot to unplug them, draining the batteries), with cheapo coloured ”spaghetti” patchcables. It hummed like hell, but back then, living in a small town and before internet, you got what you could get your hands on. Everything into a MusicMan HD120 with a Malmberg 4x12, patched to a Bassman 100 with a Bassman 4x12. Loud as hell and probably illegal volumes today... my second pedalboard I built two years ago and now I have a third one. The Gollmer 60’s trem is still on there though! :D

Super fun video. Brought me back to building my first pedal board. I had the Boss BCB6 plastic board with all Boss pedals. The Boss power supply had you daisy chain them all together. I thought it was so killer. Boss CS2, CE2, BF2 (Flanger), HM2 (Heavy Metal), and DD2 (delay). Still have the DD2 and the CS2. They are considered vintage now. Monday my Schmidt Array Board arrives from Germany. My Gigrig G2 is already here. So....34 years after building my first pedal board, along with 15 other boards since, I may be building my last pedal board. :) Cheers!!

Around the 5:20 mark I both laughed and cried when Mick mentioned his need for two overdrive pedals and a delay. This was me 3 years ago, when I picked up guitar again after many years of not playing at all. Why oh why then have I just recently needed to upgrade my pedalboard to something which now takes up half the floor space in what I laughingly refer to as my “home office”, and why do I now own 10 dirt pedals and 3 delay pedals?????!!!! It’s all because of you MIck and Dan, it’s all your fault! What have you done to me? On a serious note, some great points here. I can’t emphasise enough how much having a pedalboard, proper isolated power supplies, good cables etc. has changed my approach towards playing. As someone who only pursues guitar as a hobby, I often have limited time for playing and having everything set up ready to just power up, plug in and play has really enabled those precious moments with the instrument to be moments of creative fun, rather than repeated moments wasted setting things up and then losing interest and becoming despondent. Thank you guys, keep up the great work.

When you two play together it’s truly special. I found myself reaching for my guitar and playing along. If your goal was to inspire others to play more it certainly worked with me. One question. My black magic zen drive has a level and gain the seem to interact with each other differently than a normal drive pedal. For me to get the “right” sound I find the overall level being way above unity. I’ve mitigated this with a boost for when I don’t have the zen drive active. This leaves me feeling like I am tap dancing. What other ways are there to address the differences without making me adjust the levels on the pedal? Thanks for another great show.

My first: Three pedals, MDF sprayed black, stick-on feet and strips of stick-on velcro. Power supply was a generic 9VDC wall adapter that plugged into the daisy chain. I also took the corners off the board - dropped into a Tesco carrier bag as easy as you like - and took the velcro right to the underside and tacked it into place. Total cost about £15 with enough velcro left for several more boards.

That was fun. Been there and done that many times over the last 30 years, and still it is fun to watch you guys and see how similar my thought process is to this. Dan the Snouse sounded awesome and you have me looking at a memory man now, oh dear.. Mick i’m off to try my Tubescreamer before my Bluesbreaker for a change and now have to take another look at the foxgear As a Lefty, yes have certainly encountered the ‘right to left’ cable run issue.. these days i just use a right angle plug on the input side and loop it under the front of the pedaltrain and out the other side, i am sure there is a more expensive solution to this, but hey this works for me...

Great show guys. Ive been through many pedal boards and currently have a large one all controlled with a Gigrig Qmx10. I love pedals, but just brought a Morgan PR36 amp head, and 3 hours later my pedal board had not left its bag. This is the first amp this has happened to me, where I was just lost in how good it sounded, with the most amazing spring reverb I've heard in it. Sounds incredible with my pedal board as well. I'm in tone heaven.

One great trick is to use the pedalboard tape but DON'T take off the paper backing and glue the tape to the pedal. Instead, cut the small squares, poke a hole in the tape then use the pedal base screws through the holes. Then you don't have the glue stuck on an expensive pedal or have to worry about those rubber bottoms. Just poke a small hole, not one large enough that the scree head easily pulls through

Ya! I've had one on my board for a couple of years, and it blows me away every time I use it. Mine came before the external switches were available, so it requires a degree of jiggery-pokery to make any adjustments. I do it gladly.

Did my first board (after decades playing) a few weeks ago thanks to you guys. It works well, a Harley Benton copy of a Pedaltrain for a tenner less, and H.B.'s Powerplant ISO-1. The board comes in a gig bag with a rocket on it! Very happy with the very low noise level and overall quality. And the rocket. Sorry it couldn't be GigRig gear Dan but it's a bit beyond my budget at the moment. And I've gone wet/dry. Guys, you are changing the world, for the better! :)

I do some part time work at GC & the amount of people that complain/don’t listen when you tell them they need isolated power, NOT daisy chaining things to high hell, is mind numbing. I’m going to have to pour back through the years of TPS and see if there’s a “power is of the utmost importance” video to start directing them to. Great episode as always. All Love, Aaron

I was thinkig the same. Using something unusual, which is superglue. You can get large bottles of thin, medium and thick. Which is great for wood, as it acts as a wood filler and sealer at the same time. So those strips will stick really well. :)

@@mattgilbert7347 that sounds like a cracking plan matey, love mine. Been playing the Marshall Origin recently, but my AC15c1 was the sound I'd been searching for for a long time... That and my RAT is what I've always had in my head, the Origin was because I wanted the vintage style Marshall lead tones, which its great for, and cuts through a mix woth another loud guitarist, but now I'm the only player thinking about just getting my sound back...

This sort of video never gets old. Great sounds coming from both of these boards as well! For cleaning up cables underneath another option I've found is Velcro One Wrap. It can be cut to whatever length you need and sticks to itself. Wrap it around your cables and then whichever side of the wrap is on the outside, stick a strip of velcro of the opposite type on the bottom of the board and then the One Wrap will stick to that. I don't know if the bond is strong enough for heavy gigging but it works for me.

Great info. Thanks. Would you allow me to add something? In building my own pedalboard with a 10 output power supply, I found using a label-maker to identify each power lead (i.e. the name of the pedal it powered) at the power supply end was really helpful if a pedal died. Instead of chasing each power lead down, you can instantly see which power lead plug you need to check. Just a little thing, and a bit OCD, but worthwhile, especially in a gig situation.
