Yep, you read that right 🤓 today we're removing a lead in photoshop for Katarina! This image was posted into the critique and tips FB group with a plea for help to remove a leash form a complex photographic scene - a leash over the top of the dog itself.
In this video, we go into the nitty-gritty as I work through this removal step by step in real-time. Nothing is omitted and the different tools (clone tool, spot healing tool, patch tool etc) are used as a group to get from A to B as smoothly as possible.

I personally would use frequency separation. That way it's possible to separate the texture from the colour, which tends to give a better result without losing detail which can happen with the clone tool and the spot healing brush.

The issue here is that you are going to have to remove both the colour and the texture anyway rather than removing just colour or just texture, meaning a similarly high volume of clone work. I've not yet had a solid result with the FS method, but if you get great results then keep doing what you're doing Rob! 💪

Nice. Do you use Lightroom mobile? In theory you should be able to achieve same results as Lighroom but I can’t get it to do same things.

Hi Jon this is all in Photoshop. The clone/spot healing tools in Lightroom are not capable of this kind of retouching sadly 😔

Thank you for the tutorial! I have one problem. At 5.20 you start to use your brush tool. when i go to use it nothing happens, do you push in any button for the brush to work? I feel like i am doing something wrong

Ok, so first thing to check is that you have the mask selected from within the layer panel - make sure you have clicked on this. Then, you need to look at the colour of your brush - are you using a black brush on a white mask? If so, this is correct and should be fine! Then, check your brush is at 100% opacity and 100% flow, this will show at the top of the Photoshop screen. Let me know if you get stuck!

@@ThatPhotographySpot I was using a white brush on a white mask so i changed the colour of the brush to black and it worked! thank you for helping me :)

That's ok! If you press D on your keyboard, the colour palettes switch back to black and white if you every get a bizarre colour on them. Then you can toggle between black and white by pressing X on your keyboard. with D and X, you'll always be ready to mask 🤓

I’ve just had to do this with a brindle boxer x 😒 The only trouble is I only use photoshop on the iPad so it was a little challenging.

That's a shame David, its much easier to work on a laptop/desktop!

That Dog Spot I think I’m going to have to look at a more desktop based approach for the photoshop edits.
