Thankyou Sean. I am an old woman now, but was reared on a wee west highland croft, and seeing the dogs and animals brought tears to my eyes! We had an old border collie sheepdog called Cu! He had saved my old Uncle, bringing him down to the house in a very bad blizzard. When he was retired, he was allowed in the house. He used to lie in front of the fire and edge his way into the heat, but when he got too hot he'd howl and we had to drag him back again. This would go on all day! I was told not to feed the brute anything from my dinner plate, but I'd notice Uncle giving him a tit bit when he thought I could not see him! My Uncle always said that the animals were not pets, and kept this up when I was around. When I went to bed in the wee box bed, I'd hear him talking to old Cu and giving him MY Custard cream biscuits. He'd clap him and brush his coat talking away to him all the time! So, he did not practice what he was preaching! Ha-ha! Cu had trained a lot of our young dogs by the long lead method, just as you described! I'll be addicted to your videos from now on, and hope that you do well, ending up with a farm yourself! ....old Tich (nickname since schooldays)

Whenever the topic of raw instincts comes up, I'm always reminded of the Border Collies & Blue Heelers that would come to socialise at the local park when I was growing up. You can really see the different behavioural instincts when you've got dogs of all ages & breeds together, and hands-down the cutest example was a Bluey puppy... less than a year old, barely started obedience training, and while all the other young dogs were chasing each other around at break-neck speed, he'd be rounding all of us humans up into a group! 🤣👍

I find it fascinating, learning so much! I’ve never seen RAW vs. trained, so my mind is forever blown. I work with Border Collie’s and farm dogs that have been adopted into families in urban environments. I teach them how to use their herding instinct to overcome their anxiety. That is why I am glued to your channel because you can do something I will never do, but I can adapt it to help herding dogs at home. It’s so much fun, and much respect to your wife and family. Gratitude. 😊

I just wish I had have gotten to my rescue BC before he developed so many bad habits from being isolated for so long. We are both lucky I had plenty of time to spend with him. I’ve known since day one he would have been an amazing worker because his instincts were very strong. These dogs are so very intelligent and I sometimes tell him I’m sorry I’m not a farm owner. I’ve rarely been a day away from him and he’s my best mate. He loves going in the car with me and he’s pretty much a lounge lizard now. He loves to chase and stalk birds and sometimes I just wonder what he might have been like working. I know he would have loved it. I can only imagine what awesome parents he had. Look after your dogs. They are the greatest people.

Even during the introduction it is evident that Kate is already, in her mind, *on duty* - totally alert and ready, without a sheep in sight, in anticipation of doing her job. Then, as she is resting in the tractor after her first wild run at 4:38 , she is totally dialed in to Sean to her left, *and* simultaneously giving the sheep the side eye out of her right. Totally obedient to Sean; totally in charge of the sheep. What amazing dog!

Great idea for a video! Some more suggestions: you react to the movie “Babe”, why did you pick Storm to keep from her litter? Same for Echo. Also more about your training as a shepherd- is there a school to go to? Do you have to find a mentor to teach you? How long do you train as a shepherd before you can take a contract to work as a shepherd full time? Are shepherds typically given housing on the farm? Is it typical for your employer to allow you to graze your own herd on his ranch? How did Kate evolve where she went from not working for you to where she decided to work with you- how did she make that mental leap? When you asked Stacy to marry you, was she worried about low pay and the lonely life out of the city? How did your family react when you announced you wanted to work with livestock instead of being say, an accountant? Do you ever watch herding competitions or videos and think, “my dogs are better and we could totally smash this competition? What % of BCs end up being successful working dogs and what happens to the dogs that wash out? And finally, how has tic toc changed your life- I remember that one video where you were recognized in the forest and you got totally flustered.

Sean is a fantastic instructor. He clearly has a deep understanding of his art, and how it affects his animals, as well. When he talks, he comes across with respect, himself, as though he's talking to his best friend. It makes it very easy to listen to. I am a new homesteader (in other words, after 50 years of daydreaming, I finally got a small acreage). What I will be herding is just chickens, ducks, and geese but I am looking for a dog to help me. But after watching a slough of herding videos, and considering that I love lamb and have always wanted to spin, I am suddenly thinking of sheep - but the wife is standing her ground firmly against them. I know this isn't the scale of sheep herding that you, Sean, and your dogs do but I do appreciate your videos, just the same. Thank you.

I was watching the movie “Babe” and there is about ten seconds of Rex and Fly sprinting into action that made me crave more of the same… so here I am. These Border Collies must be the most perfect creation of God, nature, man or fiction. You can prepend the adjectives “unbelievable, incredible, amazing…” to all of these Border Collie adjectives and it still doesn’t capture the total measure of their 40-50 pounds of wonder: Speed. Stamina. Intelligence. Focus. Determination. Purpose. Attitude. Communication - with Master AND herd 😄. Agility. Resourcefulness. Courage. And let’s not forget their off duty qualities: Companionship. Beauty. Devotion to Family. It is impossible to overstate what wonderful animals they are and how lucky we are to share a world with them in it. ☺️😇😄🥰😊🙂

It is amazing how much herding instinctual the border collie have. She was wanting to herd but without direction from the handler, It can put the sheep at danger, if a dog gets out with sheep and doesn't know what their objective is, other than chasing the sheep. You show a very important lesson in the importance of a well trained dog. Border Collies are not for fun when it comes to an untrained one in with a herd of sheep or other livestock. It takes the ability to harness and train that raw instinct to the dog. Then the dog is not lost in itself and the moment. It saves the livestock energy and trust in the dog. Otherwise you have a dangerous situation . Thank you for the insight on the raw instincts and trained instincts with working dogs.
