Yet another amazingly clear and informative video that as ever, you put across in such a way amateurs like me can also understand. I like your honest opinion about all aspects and how distractions such as walkers also come into the equation. It's not at all as easy as some people may think as there are so many things to consider when setting up and shooting. You've taught me more than anyone and I really do appreciate and thank you for that Jess. I last week photographed a big, black German Shepherd (black not easy!) and could see how much more improved I've become due to your videos. It's made me feel very happy and inspired. Pippi is bursting with such wonderful energy and how brilliantly she did as she listened to you and did what you asked of her. You clearly have a beautiful relationship, as you do with all your dogs, that is truly moving to watch. Amanda

Love your Crazy Ginger Pippi!! Such a good girl. Love the shoot, too. I am always so excited to see you have loaded a new video! When you have had some more time with the 85mm, I will be super curious to know which you prefer the 105 with that insane bokeh or the 85. You make them both sing. :D
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Aww thank you! Both are awesome but in different situations I would reach for one over the other. For portraits with a little more distance all around, the 105 is the bees knees. For tighter spaces or bigger puppas, the 85 is a killer!

Nice educational video and review on this lens. However, I'm in doubt on buying a new lens, what would your prefered focal length be? 85, 105 or 135mm? I normaly shoot with a 70-200 2.8 at 200mm. So I'm curious.....
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
If you stay at the 200mm end, I would honestly look at a 135 I think? If you bounce back and forth, really get specific about where you're going back too. The 105 for me is a dream, but at times it can be a little tight, so the 85mm fills that gap for me now. I won't need wider than that I don't think, and if a 105 is too wide, I just walk forwards now! If you're happy with your 70-200 Jurgen, stick with it. There is no need to have loads of different lenses, honestly 😊 You didn't note which system you shoot with, I think Nikon do a 200mm f2 which I know is like silk. Canon might too? Sony have something coming as far as I know!
@jurgenvanhest99134 жыл бұрын
@@ThatPhotographySpot Thank you so much for your reply. I shoot with a Nikon D600, but want to sell everything, except the 70-200 and my 50mm 1.8, and buy a Nikon Z5 or Z6, with a prime lens, but that would be a major struggle to choose in focal length. That it will be a Sigma Art lens, there is no doubt.
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a tricky call. The 135 gives you options for action photos whereas the 105 is a bit rubbish in this area, make sure you consider that too just for versatility 🤓
@jurgenvanhest99134 жыл бұрын
@@ThatPhotographySpot When you say 'rubbish' then I think I've made up my mind and settle for the 135mm. I'll give it a rundown if I can rent it somewhere.
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
@@jurgenvanhest9913 For portraits it is INSANE but with a moving subject (fast dog) it's just not good at all on the AF side. It's the perfect portrait lens though! The 135 is worth a try though for sure, it's perfect for both portraits and action 🤓

Very interesting video. Please could you also do videos on: How to edit the background in a studio portrait if there are creases and wrinkles. How to determine when looking at the back of the camera if it's sharp enough cos it's hard to see. How to set the exposure right for dark dog on white background. How to correctly set white balance with a grey card. Deep dive on how to position the angle of studio lights. Mistakes that amateur dog photographers make and how to avoid them. :-) :-) :-)

OMG, I find almost every question I have in your videos, it is awesome. I have been shooting with a Nikon D4 for years now which everyone knows is heavy so I have been looking into a different camera and lens for photographing pets and some landscape while out hiking. The Sony and lens you are using was exactly what I was looking at. What is your opinion on the weight of the kit, and landscape shooting with the 85mm?
@su20mm00er3 жыл бұрын
I did a shoot with animals with my Sigma Art 85mm last year. The bokeh was awesome! I have a 70-200 2.8 but too heavy for me during a long shoot. I am not a pet photographer, but I volunteered my time to do a little fundraiser for animal charities who helped in the Australia Bushfire. My pics were acceptable but not great. Im doing another fundraiser again this year and I'm so glad I found your channel. I wanna up my game this year. I've noticed a lot of pet photographers don't bring light at the shoots. It's all natural light. Do you ever use OCF outdoor?

As I am learning more about the longer focus lengths, I tried to understand the advantages of the 85 over the 105. A little more field of view? But you also said something about it being better for closer tighter backgrounds? Can you expand a little more on the advantages of each of these 2 focal lengths? I’m assuming the 105 will offer better bokeh and so on for the longer 135 and 200 lenses, right?

I am having some trouble with the autofocus on my nikon z6, ive tried to research this but does the camera have to be in auto-af to use the eye detection? I normally use single point focus (and i know you do as well) but it seems the autofocus does not kick in at all when using it. It does work in the auto-af focus mode but none of the others. Distance and focal length count for a lot with depth of field, more so than aperture most of the time. Noise doesn’t become a visible issue until 1600 unless the image is underexposed in camera.

Sometimes the screens don't help us out! To check, set up your zoom in your display to move in to 100% on the first press. So you're viewing the full image then press zoom on the camera and you go bam straight to 100% zoom. That way, there's less guesswork. Over time though, you learn to trust yourself and your kit. Sometimes I do a little check if it's a super important shot, but for these ones I didn't look at them, aside from the first shot, until we got home ❤️
