For those rec players who get frustrated with the third shot drop, I recommend just hit it a bit long to ensure it goes over. Then sit back, if it looks good, move up, if it goes too long, stay back and try again. It really should be called the 3/5/7 drop shot- you don't have to be perfect the first time. Just get it over and keep working at moving up when the opportunity presents itself- rec games don't count, so swallow your pride and just practice it.

Instead of 'third shot drop' it can be 'odd shot drop' or 'odd drop'. I'll see myself out.

If your fast then you can move up as long as you get to the line before they hit the ball. It just needs to be low and slow and away from them.

You’ll never get the drop shot if you don’t know the proper technique. Allow the ball to reach the Apex and start to drop before you attempt a third shot drop. By then, the ball has lost most of its pace and, with practice, you can place the ball wherever you want on the court. And, of course, drill, drill, drill!

Your a great teacher Kyle. Extremely helpful. Would you reccomend putting backspin on the 3rd shot drop? I do it all the time and it works great against especially lower level/rec players.
@thatpickleballguy Жыл бұрын
The most important thing is hitting your 3rd shot so your opponent either 1. Has to let their 4th shot bounce. Or 2. hit up on the ball. So whether it's topspin or backspin, either works. I use both. I almost always hit backspin on my backhand and typically hit topspin on my forehand drop.

I am so confused about the doubles serving/scoring: 1)Does each side always start on the right side no matter what the score (for example: if your score is 3 - 5, does server #1 start on the right-hand side?) 2)Or do you start the serve on the right or left dependent on the score - right/even and left/odd thereby making server #1 whoever starts the serve dependent on the serve of the right or the left? 3)After server #1 serves and loses and the serve is passed to server #2, then does server #2 serve from the box where they currently are or do they move to the box where server #1 was?

How would you instruct, what reads suggested to a partner for deciding if and when to rush the net after partner’s return of serve?
@thatpickleballguy5 ай бұрын
clarifying question. are you talking about if... You and i are partners. and you're back returning. my court positioning would already be up at the kitchen, and you would run up right after hitting your return! is that what you mean/
@jerrywelsh33665 ай бұрын
@@thatpickleballguy I screwed up the set-up. My uncertainty and that of partners is when the other is serving, we anticipate a decent, deep return, what reads do you suggest for rushing the net together on the third shot. I find myself at times, popping the clutch inly to find that the partners third was weak and he stayed back. If I’m playing the third, I know immediately it’s decent enough to approach and get a jump.

Hi we are new to pickleball and have been playing with one partner at the kitchen line and one behind to cover if they miss. Can someone explain why this isn’t good strategy? If I’m understanding it’s just because two at the net is better offensively. We do seem to do more running than most other teams 😂but I am surprised that this isn’t typical strategy to have one offensive and one more defensive player in a sense.
@thatpickleballguy Жыл бұрын
Truthfully, the best way for you to decide if it's a good strategy is to play one game doing it, then play one game with both of you up at the kitchen! And see which one works better! Part of what makes this game is experimenting. :)

You have to be on the court to serve. So you can't be outside the sideline. Also, you can make contact in front of the baseline as long as one of your feet is still behind the baseline on impact!

Good question. The most basic answer is, improve your backhand dink and then it doesn't matter as much. That takes some time but it is the primary answer. Another option if your backhand dink is really poor right now. You can run around your backhand to allow yourself to hit a forehand for a better shot! Let me know if that helps!

On the return and run, better to return soft and long as the opponent has to let it bounce once. If the receiver of the serve hit a low hard drive they have less time to run into the NVLine.

Yes. I think that's a strong strategy. When you watch pros, you'll watch them hit it with more force because they're typically faster to the kitchen. But hitting DEEP is the primary principle!

Forget beginners, I find many players telling me they are “intermediate” can’t drop the ball in the kitchen from near the baseline area. And that is because they have absolutely no touch. They can only drive the ball, which only works at lower levels. These players are usually hyper-aggressive at the kitchen often flailing at the ball and invariably off-balance. The other shot they never hit is a reset. They don’t have the shot.

A 3rd shot drop is all about timing and keeps the opposing team on their toes. If you always drive the ball they know whats coming but if you have a drop they can't predict if you're going to drive or drop!
