Cardfight Vanguard has standard legal crossover cards, and they solve the issue of them potentially being meta by usually just making them overcomplicated nonsense cards that are just terrible. Maybe it changed during my hiatus, but you could usually expect most tier lists to be bottomed out by promotional decks. Anything moderately playable would usually get powercrept by the next main booster.
@EnerKaizer6 күн бұрын
we had multiple collab decks be meta contenders actually. the collab decks for Mushiking or Lucky&Berry for example actually topped events. The major difference is that we do not have generic staples or the like, so collab cards like this are not necessarily "must play" cards for everyone. If you want to play for example a Shaman King deck you can only use cards from the collab to make the deck, they aren't chase cards like, say, the one ring for example.
@vvv_vimeru6686 күн бұрын
That is a reasonwhy i dropped CFV. Standard was full of bs collabs, random anime girl screenshots being tier 1, AN ACTUAL BEETLE, Luard for the 3838299th time, the corocoro ones are actually so fkcing ugly and boring too. That alongside the D cards being designed like ass, decks don't last 3 months, V killed and premium on ghe chopping block just made me quit. But the collabs were the biggest drop the ball moment for me, i want to play with luchador mechas and weird creepy doll girls, not random 2003 clothing game no one remembers or random vtuber idol band
@noodleguy1006 күн бұрын
That's literally not true, multiple collab decks have topped, both ones that made it over to the US and ones that are still JP exclusive. VSPO, Mushiking, Monster Strike, Gotoubun, Love and Berry, fucking Bandori (Which has been topping and is still topping ever since it released), etc etc have each seen success and had their time in the spotlight. I think it's honestly fine in CFV, though, compared to MTG at least. For one, CFV has a collab like maybe once every 5 sets, compared to MTG now doing every other set. Two, the CFV collabs are incredibly accessible. Collab cards have different rarity tiers that make them very common and incredibly cheap (I picked up a MyGo!! collab deck for like $30-40 when it released, and was a tier 1 meta threat). Three, the collab decks are all completely self-contained. If you're playing a collab deck, you're only playing collab cards and maybe splashing in a couple generics here or there. All of the collab cards are explicitly locked to their own decks and don't work with anything else, which makes it alot easier to ignore as it's own seperate thing. I'd imagine over in MTG they're gonna be printing busted ass generic cards in all their collabs that become must play staples in Commander/Modern and w/e format they're legal in, just like they've been doing for all their previous collab sets.
@corgipuss74686 күн бұрын
@@noodleguy100 I actually have been out of the game, due to a lack of locals, long enough that I don't actually recognize all of those titles. And even if a few decks were good you have to admit, they did print a lot of poop, like that one Monster Strike guy who was just worse Bastian. Also some imports that were just too late, like I think the first TouRan import was like a year late or something. As for the MTG side, I guess that's my own ignorance. I didn't expect the card design to focus on being a bunch of generics. That sounds more annoying than anything cuz if you wanted to use collab cards, you probably want a deck of them. If they're not designed to synergize with each other then it just seems like nonsense.

In reflecting on where the precedent came from for WotC shifting their approach and jumping off the deep end of truly goofy stuff, one thing actually stood out to me for some reason and that's Fblthp. For those who don't know, Fblthp was a homunculus referenced in exactly one card's artwork and flavor text (Totally Lost) and for some reason a lot of people latched onto it HARD. Like, it was solid chuckle worthy imo, but some people ran with it creating custom cards and referencing this one obscure gag. idek how much of this is me remembering accurately and how much is retrospect based on the fact that they actally printed a damn card for the guy in a main set. I'm not saying Fblthp was the most significant thing that led down this path, but I think between that and the soon to follow resurgence of the Eldrazi as the largest threat to the multiverse only to be followed by the next and the next, Wizards may have begun to realize how effectively they could get a cheap pop by being cute and catering to players' obsession rather than building up a layered standalone story. Also see how many returns we've seen since RTR (the block containing Totally Lost) showed how much people will hype nostalgia. I remember rolling my eyes at the Godzilla tie-in cards despite them being essentially alt arts that functioned as their in-universe counterparts down to having that card's name also printed on them. The cloud I've been shaking my fist at has only gotten bigger since. I'm not sure I even feel confident in dusting off my old EDH decks to try and reconnect with the community unless I found a playgroup that didn't use UB (LotR, I could make an exception for, maybe Baldur's Gate, but beyond that it's a huge stretch). I'm being melodramatic ofc (&maybe puritanical) but that doesn't change the feels going on when I imagine sitting down across from a Mr. House commander deck or smth. That's just not really the game/theme/vibe I signed up for?

I am going to make a small defense in the case of the LOTR set: it is an IP that fits pretty well into magic as a UB. Wizards, dragons, orcs, just all around high-fantasy stuff. It is the one UB set I wouldn't mind having in standard, because the theme of the IP is not really as different from MTG official stories compared to other things. Sadly, this has already passed. They saw the profit margins, and thought: WOW, WE NEED MORE POPULAR CROSSOVERS! And now, we get Spider man, such an disconnected theme from mtg stories, for multiple years in standard.

I do not want to be reference at if I'm considering all the play pieces available to me to try and play my favorite card game. Even if they promised to do in universe reskins like they did with secret layers I wouldn't care, because at leas they really would be optional.

UB doesn’t undo the over two decades of magic sets and lore. it’s not like all of MTG disappears or that somehow Magic’s deeper appeal just vanishes instantly. There’s definitely a case to be made that MTG is compromising its identity in favor of pandering to increase sales (and given Hasbro’s involvement at this point I cannot doubt that at all). But also, I don’t care that much if I can drop Emet-Selch Final Fantasy XIV and win the game, so

while UB doesn’t undo the good parts of MTG, the destruction of Magic’s own identity in favor of chasing more and more money is definitely something that’s valid to complain about. It isn’t like I despise the idea that Patrick Star and Captain America can duke it out in a card game, however, if that means I get less original MTG content it makes me mad. Add onto this the fact that recent standard MTG sets have been steadily declining in story quality due to strict and ever shortening deadlines and it becomes obvious that WOTC and Hasbro only care about magic if it is pumping a gajillion dollars into their pockets TLDR; as usual capitalism leads to the destruction of creativity, and the time between the releases of sets in Magic shows a preference for moving cardboard rather than actually wanting to make MTG better

It is objectively better designed as the first few turns are always manageable and your journey has a definitive beginning, but it goes out the window to me when by turn 5 you are at yugioh speed these days

I never much cared about the lore. However, I associated Universes Beyond with commander product. I don't play commander. So I feel like half the games sets are "not for me".
