@@TheEvolver311Dreadhoard Arcanist, Snapcaster, Liliana and Bonecrusher Giant all left standard after dominating any deck for two years. That gives designers room to create a "weak" set that is cool for limited but doesn't see that much play in standart. Weak sets are what in the end slows down powercreep that happens over the years and what made modern what it was playing the best cards of the past 15 years. Now it is best of the last special product. The flashback Sphinx will stay until 2029 instead of 2026. Any new blue four-drop in standart has to be better or there will be no change in decks until 2029 or wizards will barely sell any packs. We know that won't happen. 😂
@_Ve_9816 күн бұрын
I think the biggest power level problem is not Foundations having very good baseline cards, it's the 6 sets a year. It's absolutely possible to make other cards that compete with those cards without being strictly better and wizards has gotten pretty good at it. If they end up increasing power creep every set it won't be because they are forced to do it, but because they want it. The real issue is that you don't actually need power creep to increase the power level of standard, just lots of cards. The more options we get, the more we will be able to pick and choose and to make our decks better and stronger.
@TonyScimeca16 күн бұрын
Allow me to propose an optimistic take, that foundations and its power level will enable draft to be more tuned. For example, If a series of new sets don’t want powerful Wraths in their limited environment, then WOTC designers won’t feel pressured to include a limited warping wrath in their set because standard already has day of judgment to fall back on

For me the biggest concern I have with foundations is actually the "build around" cards. This set is going to be legal for basically forever, which means any playable cards are going to see play for a long time. It's one thing to say "any decks that want mana dorks have llanowar elves" or "any deck that wants a wrath has day of judgement", it's another thing entirely to say "Elvish Archdruid always exists, so you're going to be playing against elfball forever and ever and ever".

@jaronfranklin116 күн бұрын
It’s possible that since this set needs to live for 5 years that this is the power bar not the floor. I don’t think they want a scenario where 3 years in the core set is useless and no one wants to buy any of it

@lVideoWatcherl16 күн бұрын
While from an operating cost perspective, it may make sense - from a company politics perspective, I bet you that Future Sets will be powercrept just as bad. Because while you are right that by reprinting foundations, they can always continue making money, if the _other_ sets then _don't_ make comparable money to previous UB sets, what do you think will the suits at WotC and Hasbro think about that? Do you think they will be happy that the revenue on sets newly made standard-legal, which are associated with licensing fees too boot, are lower than what they make on foundations? No, I don't think this will slow down powercreep in any meaningful way. I'm far more on Richard's POV - WotC basically ended Rotation for Standard, because they know it is meaningless. They will just have a Rotation within a Rotation, because the cards will rotate organically by power level.
@jaronfranklin116 күн бұрын
@ I agree with you that there will be plenty of powercreep I just don’t necessarily think that the Final Fantasy set will immediately be significantly more powerful overall. I think the goal is that Foundations is more powerful than a normal core set because it needs to withstand 5x the powercreep. But eventually it’ll just be as strong as a normal core set. Just probably not by the end of next year. Wizards can have their cake and eat it too. You want solid meat and potatoes to go with your UB dessert

That is an example of power creep in just 2 years and exactly what people are talking about. Wizards needs the new sets to sell, how do you sell new sets? You print cards that you have to have to play competitive decks, and how do cards become the new best cards in a 3 year format? They are more powerful than everything else in the format.

I think snapcaster Sphinx creature casts the most powerful card which is Sunfall. Feels silly but for 6 mana you rescue your snapcaster and cast Sunfall. Rinse repeat until they are dead. Reminds me of blue white decks when Yorion and Lier were the control deck. Along with Devide by Zero for the rescue.
@brakalanga766716 күн бұрын
Big blue control will be a thing, calling it right now. Examples of what you can do: - Season of Weaving can copy Gilded Lotus twice while drawing a card. You get 6 untapped mana this way, enough to cast Time Stop on opponent's turn. - 3 Gilded Lotuses + 5 Islands equals 14 mana, enough for Arcavios fetching Dopplegang for X=2. Two copies of Arcavios to redraw Doppelgang and finding the next Time Stop, two copies of Lotus for the required 6 mana. It's a LOCK. - Aetherize, which means no more being slowed down by white in deckbuilding - You can reanimate the new giant wizard (Archmage of Runes? iirc) with Reenact the Crime. It enters as a token, so it's another great synergy with Season of Weaving - You can ramp into Lotus thanks to Stern Lesson, which is card neutral and can be cast at instant speed. Under pressure? Aetherize. Opponent slows down? Stern Lesson. And so on. There's even Finale of Revelation in the set, although no good lands to untap (like Lotus Field, for example). There's no ring, but the revised version of Urza's Command does almost the same thing and can ramp as well if needed. It will be really, really interesting.

As a former long-time Modern Burn player, I think we're close to a Standard burn deck being playable, but a long way from a burn deck being a problem. As was mentioned in this podcast, burn requires a critical mass of burn to function. It looks like we'll either have that or be very close to it in Standard. Another thing that burn requires is not having a natural predator in the format. If there is a tier 1 deck that has access to main deck life gain, even if it is incremental, burn will be present, but not oppressive. Whether or not that natural predator will exist is yet to be seen. And finally, one of the most important reasons why Modern Burn was able to exist, is that it was able to punish the natural play patterns of a large portion of the format. Looking back at Modern from its inception through 2015, much of the format was either slow control, mana dork reliant midrange, or decks with greedy mana bases that would often do between 2-6 damage to the opponent for you. Not to mention the super greedy Jund decks back then, which had the same mana base issue but took it to a whole new level by playing Thoughtseize and Dark Confidant. Those decks would often make it so easy for burn that burn had to only commit 3-4 cards to actually kill the opponent in game 1.

I feel like FDN provides 60-70% of a deck archetype, the "good enough" slot. The big bombastic cards are still gonna be from other sets, but this is that toolbox of "here's the red burn package" or "green ramp package" or "orzhov life gain package"

Isnt ward 7 basically haste on the eldrazi creature? If it does get removed well then it technically did its job as a big beater right? Instead of haste it has "etb: opponent discards a removal spell and loses 7 life." Isnt that better than having haste and it still gets removed before combat damage even goes through? 37:39
@styfen16 күн бұрын
For some colours yes, but not all. There's ways of removing it that don't trigger the ward, including Wraths, Edicts and the new Nowhere to Run. It is a huge issue for decks without access to wraths, but all those colours should either be closing the game out before it happens or countering the card. There are cheatyface ways to get this big idiot down faster than normal, but Smuggler's is relatively slow and Kona only has 3 booty. The bottom line is Standard is so fast, aggro is so pushed and has multiple directions of attack that Timmy's mate here needed to be this insane to even have a shout of being a viable card.

I'd love a MtG like pokemon. It'd be amazing if they have it where if you collect over 4 of one kind you can send them to arena or online

It's not that deep. Hearthstone already did this with the base set.

Sire of seven death's is being talked about for modern just because of it's mana cost. Ugin's labyrinth cares about mana value 7+ and sire of course has a mana value of 7.

Seth, when are you stop asking the same question every set lol. You go " now that youve seen all the cards for set X, what impact do you think they will have?" . its gonna be the same answers, you are gonna be skeptical too much will change, Richard will say nothing will change and Crim will be the reasonable one and say there will be a few cards that will add to standard.

Lets be honest, the real card people want to play is Vampire Nighthawk, it's super good and is in no way my favorite card, can't possibly be... ;)

I wanna know in what world they thought Regal Caracal is ok. I was banned in standard the last go around, and it was pre-banned in pioneer like WTF!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!
@Crusina16 күн бұрын
Why? *edit wtf drugs are you on
@AstoranSolaire16 күн бұрын
Not only was Regal Caracal never banned in Standard, it has also not been banned in any format ever. Furthermore, only fetches were pre-banned in Pioneer. You are thinking of Felidar Guardian, which in fact evaded a ban in Pioneer for a whole two weeks.
@smartkaboose380616 күн бұрын
I think you're thinking of a different card. A 5 mana lord that makes 2 1/1s would never and has never been banned

I'm buying a total of 3 play-sets of Land-Of-War, Twinflame Tyrant and Lyra Dawnbringer. I died wayyy to many times by the hands of Lyra last standard.

I remember when Carnage Tiran was actually great in Standard. And now, we're arguing that Sire of Seven Dust ain't good enough. Kind of how MTG goes, I guess haha.

Everyone else: Foundations is pretty weak. These guys: Is this set too strong!?!?!
@CopticKalnor16 күн бұрын
As an old hand in Yu-Gi-Oh, Foundations lasting 5 years and being this strong scares me. I've always admired how in comparison Magic's power creep was at a snail's pace. That was entirely down to its rotation. With Foundations sticking around for 5 years and setting a reasonably high bar you get the same issue as Yu-Gi-Oh where if they don't print more powerful cards people won't buy the sets. Then you get to where that game is so unplayable and worse than visiting the dentist now. Also throwing Universes Beyond into standard will accelerate this. Marvel won't be happy if they're IP isn't selling as it's underpowered. Any IP holder will want their set to be the next best thing to ensure sales and free advertisement for years to come. They want Spiderman to win worlds next year. So I am very worried Magic is going to snowball into hell like Yu-Gi-Oh did years ago. With unplayable sets peppered with one or two chase cards to sell them. Quickly followed by a ban list as the only way to attempt to rectify the format once they've cashed in...

Every set rotates, they powercreep the same year. Even sheoldered is falling off. This is not a long "evergreen" set, it is the current rotation

Does anyone else remember the dozens of times Seth talked about how boring it was to crack digital packs in MTG Arena? Seems like he’s completely forgotten that.
@stevendefeo842416 күн бұрын
At the 7 minute mark Richard was saying how each set that follows has to be more powerful than the one before. It doesn’t have to. They should start intentionally powering down these sets. If players leave then players leave.

They should print a Two mana of red creature that's like a 2/1 No key words When thiss creature attacks it deals three damage to any target
@Suppaichu16 күн бұрын
Alesha seems like a nice design though. In a curve out deck, it can reanimate anything you played t1 or t2 and died, and can get out of control if alesha herself starts attacking and reanimating 3 drops and sheoldreds. Might be too cute though, but i like it a lot i kinda just wish it reanimated the creature attacking, i think that might have been able to make it worth it

Due to airflow, presumably from a ventilator, Crim's blue hair sometimes forms some sort of ahoge during the episode. Lol

After seeing the set I don't think fundation is meant to be a baseline traditional style core set. It is more like a collection of staples for the next 5 years and some plants for the future (elf lords for lorwyn for example). Maybe this is a way wotc wants to adress rotation aversion in players ? If your deck is in large percent foundation it doesn't really rotates.
@levithewizard16 күн бұрын
When i played tournaments 10 years ago some deck archetypes wouldnt have enough cards to be viable especially (midrange/control). This feels like their giving each color the "foundation" cards to make 1 viable deck
