What truly puzzles me is why Mac Jones is a mid 1st round pick and Purdy is a late 7th round pick. Looking at their college stats, I am not seeing it. They have similar styles and Jones was passing to much better talent than Purdy (arguably a bit better competition to but the Big 12 isn't the FCS either).

@@jimwerther - Without pass Texans draft first and take Young instead of Stroud. Panthers do better with Richardson who becomes their franchise QB. Young flames out with the Texans like he probably is with the Panthers. Bears don't get first pick because Panthers do better with Richardson. Arguable but that is the reasoning. Not sure who the #2 pick was on Panthers draft board. They could have taken Stroud instead so Richardson ends up with the Colts anyway. Same situation with Mahomes in KC.

QB is the most mysterious position in football It just all depends on the teams they got drafted by the players around him and the coaches Some players needed a certain coach to unlock there potential Mahomes on the Bears roster would probably be a different Mahomes from today Some QBs thrive year 1 similar to Stroud and others need to sit on the bench first Brady, Rodgers etc..

You would think in a copycat league like the NFL they would take the Chiefs or GB approach and have their rookie QB sit behind an established veteran like Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers. Mahomes is the outlier to end all outliers because the Chiefs built a team before taking Mahomes but I digress.

Trey Lance was basically proof the league doesn't understand qbs as it pertains to scouting. Played half a season really. He rarely played past halftime. Had no real tape. Didn't do the All Star games. He played one game in '20. Against UCA. Didnt play well. Then he had a monster combine. I mean "He must be Him." Type performance. A combine baby. It happens way too often. A guy has one excellent day in shorts throwing to wide open guys. Then, he's "high ceiling" or "raw potential". Its an obvious flaw they refuse to deal with.

@thequixoticangler3364
@thequixoticangler3364 6 ай бұрын
@@MikeHarvey-ol7xr it's even crazier than that. You're a fellow tape rat, I'm assuming. You mentioned some things only a rat would notice. 1. Beyond the 0 int, he had less than 10 contested passes all year. That's not just a red flag, that drops you off the board if the scouts understand football. He played in a ridiculously basic scheme. 2. That scheme was because of him. He's not a high IQ player. He never, ever called an audible and check downs were slim to none. Again, a good scout understands that means one of three things: 1. The coaches are ignorant and don't know how to scheme. Not likely considering that HC took over at KSU and has revolutionized that offense. 2. They don't trust him. If you're not giving him options, that's because he can't be trusted to understand when and why. 3. He's an airhead. His interviews confirmed this. Shanahan didn't want him, but McDaniel and the owner were sold. The brass forced the pick. Shanny knew it was a waste from go. In this case it's 2 and 3. He just didn't have it, but because of Wentz and the spotlight on that program (NDSU during the 5 year period from Wentz to Lance lost 0.3 games a year, and, they had more players drafted in that time than the rest of fcs combined) and him going off in Indy, he got the "Needle" treatment. As in they thought they'd found the needle in the haystack. The Lawrence draft had 4 "Needles". Only Trevor remains. Teams feel forced to draft a QB in the first. It's killing the league.
@thequixoticangler3364
@thequixoticangler3364 6 ай бұрын
@@MikeHarvey-ol7xr one more thing: Nobody develops QBs anymore. They just assume they're ready and will grow into it. Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes, Cousins and Brees all sat a year or more. The NFL did this to itself because of one player: Andrew Luck. He broke the mold and the game as a whole. Everyone is looking for the next Luck. The best "new" QB this year was Love. What did he get to do that the others didn't? Sit and learn. Levis is next.....

Let me put it this way. 2021 was a very hard year to judge the QB class just because a lot of them played a shortened 2020 season because of COVID-19. I don't blame the scouts for putting guys like Zach Wilson and Trey Lance that high because those guys played more games in 2020 than most of the QBs in that class. The same went for 2022. Although a bunch of highly touted QBs had down years in 2021 which is why they slid in the draft. The 2023 QB class needs time as well, but there's also the feeling that like most times when a QB is considered a bust, it has little to do with him but with how inept those organizations are when it comes to surrounding the QB with a talented Offensive Line. Whats the point of a top QB if he doesn't have a freaking line long term.

Fields is a victim of bad timing since he was drafted by a coach and GM who were both on the hot seat trying to save their jobs. This was mostly because Ryan Pace's roster construction sucked as he constantly traded picks to move up in the draft and only did the bare minimum to improve the o-line and skill positions. And when Pace finally did draft a tackle, he needed back surgery and missed half his rookie season - which has been a recurring theme since the last super bowl appearance for them. Nagy on the other hand failed Justin by putting him in as a starter far too soon against an opportunistic Browns defense led by Myles Garrett while implementing a game plan that envisioned using Andy Dalton passing from the pocket. He got sacked like 10 times in his first game and the sacks never stopped coming. Big Dick Nick Foles who was second on the depth chart should have gotten the start against the Browns and let Justin start against an easier opponent. Nagy continued to not tailor the game plans to Justin's strengths the rest of the season and both he and Pace were gone at the end. Poles has been very diplomatic in his wait-and-see approach to Justin's development, but ultimately his slow development and inconsistent play have led Poles to move in a different direction. I wish Justin all the best in his second chance with the Steelers because he's a good dude with very obvious talent that needs to be harnessed and have the wrinkles in his game ironed out. And I look forward to the dawning of the Caleb Williams era in Chicago and hope that maybe, just maybe fortune smiles upon the Bears at the quarterback position. Even the Cubs eventually won a World Series, no?

Blame the fans and owners. Everyone has lost perspective and patience. They think you have to be a playoff or Superbowl team the year you're drafted if you're a quarterback. If you struggle, then you're s bust. Not realizing what entails playing the position. They look at CJ Stroud and think he has to replicate that type of season while not realizing that that's a rarity.

It's not fans and owners. It's the market..after Rookie deals, QBs are expensive. The most expensive contracts with most guaranteed money. Market and cap space pretty much forces teams to make hard decisions after a few seasons.

What went wrong is too many nfl scouts, and talking heads of the media boosted these dudes up so much for not proving anything. So many came from dominant programs where they really didn’t have to be a smart qb, they just had to deliver the rock- and now they realize that you gotta break down blitzes zone coverages etc…maybe scouts will learn

I agree with Mac Jones on the coaching changes stifling his growth. Look what Alex Smith went through his first 5 seasons. They went through 3 head coaches and 5 offensive coordinators. It wasn't until Harbaugh came along that they found out he was actually very good. I always thought that Aaron Rodgers would have been destroyed by that instead of the star he became if he would have been drafted by the Niners.

As one those much hated Vikings fans i still love your content. What your saying here is exactly what ive been trying to tell people. Its my personal feeling that Denver may possibly end up looking like draft day kings down the road by ending up with the 5th or 6th QB. If you look at the last 20 years of drafts you have almost as many hits in rounds 2-5 as you do in the first. The highest draft position would probably be Josh Allen and he wasn't even taken in the top five. All this trade up and qb run talk feels like insanity. Maybe the nfl should rename this years draft to "your hitting yourself, quit hitting yourself, why are you still hitting yourself?"

one expert said it before the best way to be draft proof is just to trade down and get as many picks as possible. because most people always get them wrong, thats just how math works. so having more picks will shield you from misses. and rookie wage is so cheap, hitting 1 or 2 is save you like 10-15m a year vs veteran pros.

I feel like Denver should sit back and get a QB they like when they get a chance. We are in rebuild mode and it's going to take a few seasons to get out from under that cap so we need to be hoarding all future picks at this point. Besides Denver obviously can't pick QBs so we'd probably wiff anyway, better to take a chance later where just as many star QBs have been found as the first round.
@Zay-y6m

Maybe instead of blaming the QBs blame the weapons they have, their coaches, and the stuff your asking them to do. QB is only a small part of the equation to a winning team The biggest issue I have with the Trey Lance draft was that nobody gave Trey the time of day. The guy has barely even been able to play One snap in the NFL and it's pretty much just been traded from team to team like a playing card
