I don't see that documented anywhere. Most teams won't share their plans for a player 7 days from now, much less for an entire year in advance. Please share a link to a quote from someone within the Vikings organization stating that McCarthy would sit through all of 2024. It doesn't exist. But let's go with that logic, based on what has transpired. Darnold should be re-signed, and McCarthy should sit. He didn't get to develop on the sideline this season. He was injured. If he starts next season, it's the same thing as starting day one, thus going against their entire alleged philosophy to prepare for success.

"System quarterback" is such a stupid and nebulous term thrown about by people who don't understand offenses. What, you want all your play to be broken, scrambling chaos fests? When you have a QB who sees the offense through the same eyes as the coaching staff, throws on time, maximizes the progressions, doesn't turn the ball over much, has the arm and anticipation to put the ball anywhere the system tells you too and people use those qualities as a negative? WTF? Darnold does pretty well on broken plays too. He's the right play in the right "system."

And before you go...But, but, playoffs! But, but Super Bowl! The defense let this team down more than he did. (Yeah, yeah. Checkdown. 🙄) The guy took a beating and those who say his down field passes were inaccurate are, themselves, inaccurate. But haters gotta hate. All that said, I was fine not paying him big money after that Achilles injury. Too tough to know how players will come back or if they'll come back. Obviously, he hasn't come back from it. And obviously both he and Rodgers prove that just because you did well at one team doesn't mean it will translate to another.

Had this same conversation on another thread. I'll just copy-paste instead of re-writing: - 25M, 2 year deal, or 35 for 1. I'm a big JJMc fan, but like the Packers have shown, there is absolutely value in having a rookie sit in his first year. From what I hear, JJMc has been AMAZING in conducting himself like a professional, in team meetings, watching film, and all the things that one would hope from a player (even an injured one), so IF he comes back strong, I'm ok-ish with him taking the reigns for real next year (Kevin O'Connell being a big reason too). Now, realistically... Daarnold gets an extension like Mayfield in the range of 4x40 from someone (likely the Browns, because..... Browns). In that inevitable scenario, I'd like to see Daniel Jones sign a prove-it ~several million one year - which would be smart for him too, to grow under KOC. Then flex snaps between him and JJ depending on opponents and game situations - and that also gives JJ the freedom to take time off for knee safety. What I DON'T want to see is the Vikes make a long term commitment to Darnold... and I don't think that would happen - one thing the Vikings have been very good at is knowing when to let guys walk. ^ very well thought out. Would you change your mind if Darnold plays really well in a deep playoff run? - Honestly, no - not at the price and term he would command in that situation. The Vikings have made several mediocre QBs look like All-Pro's over the last several years. Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson, and a perpetually capable running game (except last year)... That's why I'd be curious to see Daniel Jones as the Opening Day / 1A (with a Cap Hit comparable to the risk). As we've discussed with regards to floundering franchises, the Giants also have to be on that list. TALENT doesn't just go away - only the ability for teams to utilize it. Jones could easily be the next Baker with the weapons around him, and a line that is sufficiently adequate.

As a Panthers fan, I saw what he was and is capable of. Tbh I'm glad he left Carolina. I liked when we picked him up and that 4-0 start that year was, because of him and McCaffrey. We lost McCaffrey to injury and then we saw what happened. Then we traded him away and made it worse for Darnold. Coaching and weapons are so important to a player and it shows with the Vikings

I think we need to see Sam darnold in a season 2 to see if not only: 1. Repeat the success 2. Can KOC repeat the success.(Technically it's already answered but I want to see him with the same QB for a second year. I'm not arguing that this guy cant make a team out of a bin of Hot Wheels) 3. If the rumors are true and Brian Flores leaves can they both repeat the success without him on defense.
@BalsamicThunderКүн бұрын
As a Vikings fan I think the number 1 reason Darnold comes back no matter what next year is how injuries to the qb have shown you need to have 2 guys you are confident in. No team would no that better than the Vikings considering this is the second year in a row we have had a qb lose their season due to injury. Plus I think Cousins in Atlanta could be seen as an example of what happens if you comeback to early from a major surgery league wide. Atlanta's Cousins situation gives valuable insight to benefit his former team about handling a major injury recovery season. Especially when it the exact same team doctors who looked at both of their injuries and can make comparisons. I would prefer JJ to not suit up at all for at least the first half of next year even as a backup regardless of what happens to Darnold just to 1000000% sure he is healthy.

Having Jettas command a ton of attention certainly helps, but Darnold’s accuracy is ridiculously high on some real tight windows. He’s had a few INTs here and there, but more often then not he’s either hitting guys right between the numbers, or putting the ball in a place where only the receiver can get it.

I would say with as many wins as you got with him and possibly getting the number 1 seed, you gotta keep him. Especially if he wins some playoff games there is no question. Even getting to the NFC championship would be monumental would ensure a great contract. And just have McCarthy sit for a few years, Packers style, then you can send him in. But you gotta ride with Darnold for a while, with him this team is firing on all cylinders.

I said before the season that Sam Darnold was in the best QB situation in terms of all QB's on their first year with a new team and that i wouldn't be surprised if he had a Mayfield/Smith eqsue resurgence but damn, i never imagined it would be THIS good. I was going to bet on him for the comeback player of the year too until they announced that they would be changing the way they define a comeback player to pretty much only cover players who came back from injury.
@ajgross672 күн бұрын
As a Vikings fan we need to offer Darnold a 3 year deal with the 3rd year having minimal guarantees, and if he doesn’t take it then franchise tag him. If he does take the deal then be open to offers on trading JJ, but only if a team is really willing to overpay. I think the most likely outcome is both guys are on the team next year, and the front office restructures some other deals to make the cap work
@juicesnap2 күн бұрын

@ajgross672 күн бұрын
@@juicesnapI think you let Jones walk to get the comp pick. I really don’t see a scenario where they keep all 3 QBs and Darnold has played too well to let him walk. Maybe if you trade JJ you keep Jones as a backup but only if he if takes a fairly cheap deal
@zlinedavidКүн бұрын
For the Vikings’ sake, I hope they sign Darnold to a 3 year deal and let McCarthy sit. The kid is just getting ready to turn 22 as it is, he’s got plenty of time to sit and develop. @Cmoli31452 күн бұрын
The more I watch football, I realize there are no bad QBs in the NFL. Every QB just needs a good scheme and coach that matches the strengths of the QB. If you go to the Jets, or the Browns, you are set up to fail. Move them to a better organization and it’s like they are a completely different player. That’s why i always feel bad for #1 overall picks. They are set up to fail from the beginning.
@LakotaMcConnell2 күн бұрын
I dunno I feel like Nathan Peterman isn't going to be good no matter what
@nightshift82492 күн бұрын
In the broad strokes, yes. There are physical outliers and different ways of approaching the position, but I agree that most high draft picks are set up to fail when they go to these dumpster fire organizations like the Jets. As a Giants fan, I watched up close as our franchise destroyed DJ’s development with three different coaching regimes and a highly publicized campaign to draft his replacement after paying him. Maybe DJ will have his own Darnold-like rebound after some time with a healthier organization.
@pyrrhus62642 күн бұрын
I think it was part of a question about Darnold actually but KOC said something like “QBs don’t fail organizations, organizations fail QBs.” With that attitude it makes sense this would be the place he finally thrives.
@vidowatcher912 күн бұрын
Something I've been thinking about lot too lately, especially with Goff's elevation, Geno, Darnold, Purdy, Darnold, the still pedestrian but better play of 2022 Daniel Jones. There are exceptions but the physical talent is almost always there. People like Jamarcus Russell and Manziel with their alleged poor work ethics probably never develop, unless maybe there was even a staff that could coach that out of them. And there exceptional talents. I don't want to minimize the insane arm talent of a Mahomes and prime Rodgers, the insane dual threat of a Lamar Jackson, the pre snap genius of Tom Brady/Peyton Manning, the tough play of Josh Allen, etc. There are all timers and that still needs to be respected, but I agree. The vast majority of NFL players are good enough to be average at least in the right system. The Browns not having a QB since The Revolutionary War is an indictment on the Browns. Not Tim Couch.
@zaneseibert2 күн бұрын
I've come to the conclusion that any QB picked in the top 10 will underwhelm. Not because the the QB is bad, but because the team is bad. QB is an infrastructure based position.

To answer the question in the headline, "beat Detroit then make a playoff run." Let's not put the cart before the horse. I'm inclined to agree with Stephen A on this one-the single easiest way for an NFL team to live in cap hell for years is to give too much money to a QB who isn't on the talent level of a Brady or Manning or Mahomes. Ask Seahawks fans what overpaying Russell Wilson got them, or Ravens fans the same question about Joe Flacco. If the Vikes can get Darnold on a team-friendly contract, great. If he wants superstar money, they need to let him go and use that cap money (as you mentioned, they've got QB-on-rookie-deal potential at the position, which is how Wilson and Flacco got rings in the first place) on the O-line and the defense. You don't build dynasties giving superstar money to journeyman quarterbacks.
@natebohach12 күн бұрын
Yeah we had 6 years of hell with Cousins.
@shawnjohnson97632 күн бұрын
@SimuLord A few things to point out. The Vikings have a ton of cap space and built this roster with over $60 million in dead cap and still had the greatest free agent class in history. Second, Flacco and Wilson weren't journeyman QBs, they were with the teams that drafted them and Wilson played great for nearly a decade. If you win a Superbowl, you don't dump the guy who got you there. Third, look at the teams that have been winning the Superbowl for the past 5 or 6 years. They all have QBs on big contracts. But those QBs play at a high level and get it done, and the teams manage to build a roster around them. That being said, the Vikings have shown that they are willing to move on from a guy if he's too expensive or isn't the right fit.
