Some great takes on this situation. I always felt like Russ was just kind of corny but a really good dude. I thought it was terrible that fans booed him at the Broncos-Seahawks game. A little perspective on one thing from a Hawks fan: You (like most people) saw him rush back from injury to not quit on his team. I saw him insist that he was healthy when he wasn't, come back just as Geno was hitting his stride, play like crap for three games, and then FINALLY admit that he came back before he was healthy. We went from Geno putting up 31 pts (against the Jags, but still) to being shut out for the first time in a decade, with Wilson insisting all the while that he was healthy, which nobody believed for a second. Here's the thing about Wilson- I'm sure he really believed that the team was better off with him playing injured than with Geno. Endless positivity is Wilson's brand and it has worked for him, but it's gotta come with some Ws or it just comes off as ego and wishful thinking to the fans.

I hate Wilson's contract. I hated Hacketts decision making. Wilson's career has been pretty consistent in Seattle. Eight 10+ win regular seasons, the occasional division title (he's won 4 in 10 seasons) and 8 playoff appearances. Roughly half of these accomplishments were without Lynch and the Legion of Boom. All 3 clearly needed to be together for the Seahawks to get to win their only Super Bowl and later fell 1 yard short of repeating.

I think Russell Wilson is really a good guy who tries to be too careful in speaking to the media (or anybody) that he comes across as fake or ingenuine. He is also very religious, which can make some people uncomfortable when he talks to them. The guy has never done anything wrong off-the-field other than doing corny commercials. He can rub people the wrong way, but he is hardly Public Enemy #1.

I'll tell you why people have turned on Wilson: because he told the world that he would be better if it wasn't for lesser talents holding him back. He portrayed himself as the selfless player following the game plan of his conservative coaches to the detriment of his own personal glory. Then when he got the chance to prove it, it appears that it was exactly the other way around, i.e., the coaches, teammates, and game plans made Wilson look better than he actually was. This might be complete bullshit: maybe he's just older now and he would have lived up to his own hype five years ago, or maybe the Broncos coaches aren't putting him in a position to succeed. But regardless of the reality, nobody likes a big-talker who takes the credit doesn't actually have the skills to back it up--maybe because every person has had to deal with that type of person at some point--and that's how Russell Wilson is coming across the people right now. I suppose you could say he's embodying the sort of person everyone has had to deal with, and whom everyone hates. I think it's overblown, but no one said public opinion was logical or fair, and Wilson at least has the luxury of crying himself to sleep on a pile of money. And I'm sure that mental image doesn't make him any more likeable to his detractors. I'm not a Broncos fan but I hope Wilson figures his shit out. It's always depressing to see a HoF career end in boos and ineptitude.

With that price tag came a budget deficit everywhere else on the field, and he acted like it wasn't his fault Seattle couldn't pay for more talent around him. Denver then made the same mistake and payed him, trading away any opportunity they had to build a complete team around a solid QB. Wilson's ego lines his pockets, but cripples his teams.

Weirdly enough I feel like people are criticizing Wilson because of broncos fans. When russ got traded all you heard was oh we fleeced the Seahawks and we are gonna finish first in the division. When russ got extended before taking a snap broncos fans were saying we got a steal. Seahawk here, and I can explain some of the hate. 1) Broken Hearts - He said he would stay in Seattle his whole career, so when he filed for divorce with Seattle we truly felt like a jilted spouse. 2) We defended him - We knew his issues, but we defended him anyway. There came a point about 2 years ago when we knew Seattle wasn't big enough for Pete and Russ, and there was a 50/50 split among the fans about who should stay and who should go. 2.1) His supporters would have followed him straight into the ground. I know because I was one of them. There was always a reason to give him the benefit of the doubt. 3) It has come out that Russ was not held accountable in the locker room for way too long. While the LOB was getting dressed down for bad games, Russ was getting a pass. I don't remember if it was Pete or secondhand Pete, but he admitted he didn't hold Russ responsible soon enough. 4) It's a game - I will hate on Russ professionally for the rest of his career. No reason to support him or wish him well if he isn't a Hawk. As a multiplier for me, he went to Denver...Fuck that horse-faced fuck John Elway. Yeah, I was a fan when we were in the same division.

Russell complained about getting sacked too much in Seattle... the problem wasn't his offensive line, it's that he holds on to the ball too damn long. He's currently on pace for 55 sacks which would be the most in his career. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. He's been exposed and no longer has Coach Carroll to cover up Russell's flaws.

I am a Seattle fan and I know I'm really late to the party here, but when I booed Russ in that Week 1 game, I did it literally because of the fact that it was him on another team playing against us. It wasn't because I hate the guy; he, the Legion of Boom, Pete Carroll and everybody else on that team in 2013 and 2014 are literally the reason I became a football fan. I actually wanted him to dominate this year (just as long as it wasn't against Seattle, of course) because I know he's a fantastic QB. I assumed this line of thought was how Seahawks felt in general. My interpretation-and I'm sure it's shared-is that Geno was doing pretty well in relief after his torn finger. So you're trying to convey to the football world how great you would be on their team, and your backup is starting to show that he can lead the team as well as you can. Turn that over in your mind. So Russ comes back early and puts Geno back on the bench. But he's back too soon, and the 'Hawks lose several games because he can't throw well. Thats Good Sports- As a Seattle resident and a Hawks fan, I was 100% behind Wilson for the 8 of his 10 years here. His last 2 years here weren’t great and his last year was bad. The Wilson “thing” has many layers to it. Lets go start at SB50. There might be some truth to the play call. I don’t know if it was an audible or he convinced Pete to do a pass play but I believe he coveted that SB MVP and the glory. Pete is a veteran coach that knows what to do in situations like that. Who’s going to be remembered more? The QB that hands off for the win? Or the QB that passes for the win? Wilson is obsessed with legacy, and it wasn’t obvious back then as it was in his last 2 years here. Now to his last 2 years where he wanted to cook. Pete let him cook until he burned the food against the Bills and Pete said nope, no more. I also think that leading up to his last 2 years here he broke plays intentionally so he could throw it. We’re teammates covering for him? I think so; especially the offense. As a player that counts on getting the ball; they aren’t going to throw him under the bus; they do that they don’t get the ball. Wilson got booed because of HOW he left, not because he left. Wilson’s deep ball hasn’t been good for some time, lat injury or not. Wilson also isn’t Manning. He’s not Brady. He can’t do for the Broncos what Manning did or what Brady did for the Bucs. He wants what those guys had/have and he’s not earned it. For a bunch of guys with business acumen- the guys that bought the Broncos- they sure did a bad business deal signing Wilson to such a massive extension before he even took a snap! Broncos should have waited until he was into year 2 of what he had left. As a long time Hawks fan who watched every game of Wilson's career it's actually pretty straightforward; the "Legion of Boom" + Lynch was what propelled us to those two Super Bowl appearance's. Football is a team sport. There is no I in team. Plus Russell claiming that he carried the Seahawks on his shoulders is total bull shit. If you look back at the stats for SB 48 win over the Broncos, where the Seahawks scored 43 points, Russell only threw 2 TD’s for a total of 12 points. That leaves 31 points scored by Steven Hauschka and LOB defense. Ever since 2016 when Russell married Ciara his play went downhill. We barely got to the playoffs as the wildcard and either lost the wildcard game or the next game. We didn’t even make the playoffs in 2021. Russell is all about himself, yet plays a team sport. If he wanted to be about himself then he should of played tennis, golf, or any other individual sport. As a Seahawks fan, I’m glad Russell is gone. Thanks Broncos for taking him off out hands.

Know what, I appreciate you putting this up. In the beginning I was upset about losing Russ and us keeping Pete and Jon (who I am still judging for losses and poor decisions within the last 3-4 years). However, with the stuff Richard and KJ brought up and the different narratives running around, Russ' antics, all that helps make things more clear for me. I may still be a lil sore about losing Russ I am not feeling as upset as I used to be. Also Geno sort of won me over this past Sunday.

Also, as a Hawks fan, love this take, Perna. I don’t think he’s a bad dude, but I think his always on personality limits his ability to respond to situations. Remember when he signed that huge extension with Seattle and sent out that cringy video saying something like “hey, we got the deal done” with a completely different voice, and everybody mocked him. I think that was him trying (and failing) to experiment with “dropping the facade”. Everyone laughed at him, and it reinforced to him that he can’t break out of that persona.

Remember when people talked shit about Seattle for booing Russ? Now Bronco fans are on his gram talking shit because he had a bad game. As a Hawks fan, the hate we have for Russ is justified. We supported him through his ups and downs. But when you cost us a superbowl, blame your o-line, and say you’re carrying a team on your back then leave because you think you deserve more money and end up doing worse, of course that deserves some hate… especially when a legendary defense is sacrificed for you. And to top it all off, your backup QB ends up outperforming you.

As a life long seahawks fan, I clown on russ only because Geno is doing so well. But in reality I also know that Russ will be great he's just having a rough patch and I truly hope he has a great career, but I will also say when we released Bobby Wagner that hurt a whole lot more. When he started out he was real. Like a role model, doing the right things. Going to Children's unannounced, being all about the game, and being what I would argue is an elite quarterback. Then there was the divorce and transition in life. It felt what was an authentic and real character began to become more about legacy and individual accolades. There was suddenly more coverage about what he was doing off the field then recognition for what was on it. And on top of that Russ' paycheck cost him his All-Pro offensive line. So instead of consistent line play he had to run for his life looking like a God of playground football. But then his reps released trade statements, while he denied and reaffirmed his commitment to Seattle. Go Hawks was the mantra, while his representation asked to leave do to poor offensive line play despite the fact his paycheck ate that budget. (As your Broncos are about to discover Perna) I personally love what he did, and respect him. But it's what he did after that earned the vitriol of the 12s. To put it in Mariner terms, he should have been Edgar, but he became A-Rod. I hope stuff improves, but actively he needs to put team over legacy so you can actually "ride".

To me one of the most fascinating things we're going to find out is how much Pete Carroll was managing Wilson's ego. They traded for and signed players for Wilson, hired an offensive coordinator for him, hell Pete still happily takes the blame for an interception Wilson threw. But in the end it wasn't enough--he needed to go somewhere else that wasn't holding him back from being one of the greats. His new coach is already gushing about Wilson being another coach on the field and is treating him basically like a peer. How is that going to work when they lose a few games and Wilson isn't happy with the game plan? What if he keeps getting sacked at the same rate?

As a seahawks fan I think the media and the sports world during last offseason has taken the Russ situation to a whole new level of annoyance. Going into the offseason people were barely talking about Russ as a top QB anymore, he was coming off an injury and his worst statistical season in his career. The second he was traded to Denver everyone did a 180, they acted like he was an elite QB , shoved the narrative about how we were going to be a basement dwellers in our faces, and even went as far as to give Wilson an undue amount of credit for the seahawks success over the last decade. It pissed me off how all these idiot fans who clearly hadn't followed the Russ saga at all complained about the fact that Russ was (understandably) booed in the seahawks game to start the season. We were apparently supposed to be all giddy that he was going out onto the field to try and beat us after the 1 year roller coaster that had just taken place and we were ungrateful if we didn't give him a standing ovation. Don't get me wrong Russ and his media team have obviously been frustrating but the sports world's misunderstanding of it all has been what's pissed me off the most.

But in the second half of 2020 and all of 2021 he was a shell of himself. But after he got traded last March people seemed to forget that and get on the hype train.

Thanks for articulating my thoughts on RW this season, as a Bronco fan. I am genuinely frustrated with his play, which might be unreasonable given the new system, team and coaches. But I really think he should be playing better and was excited when he was acquired. I knew he was a dopey fake cornball and didn't like his personae/personality, but he is also a very good quarterback. He works hard, stays out of trouble and gives back to the community. Does he seem cool? No way, but he is a consummate professional. You know who else were dopey fake cornballs? John Elway and Peyton Manning, great QBs who would shill for anything and are awshucks wholesome. In fact, the coolest QBs Denver has had in my lifetime are Jake "The Snake" Plummer and Jay Cutler.
