Stan, teeks, six60, lab -They are all maori (from new zealand not australia). Singing is huge part of the maori culture. Its how we hand down our ancestors stories and values and even how we welcome people. That soulfulness you hear from these singers comes from waiata and a background in singing maori songs (if you maori you have to sing at family stuff so we trained from the get go). Ya should review some kapahaka our traditional maori songs and you'll see the connection.

Teeks is legit. He sounds great live. He's also awesome with culture. I don't know if he still does, but he used to teach Te Reo Māori, our Indigenous language, at tertiary level and is part of an organisation of Māori creatives who provide rangatahi (young people) with mentoring. He's also been open in interviews about the journey music has taken him on emotionally and the growth he is achieving as a man because of it. Just seems humble.

Oh, I forgot, use of vibrato is a common form of expression with Māori. You will hear it in our songs and chants, traditional instruments, karanga (formal call of welcome) etc... It is used for a number of different reasons. Sometimes it ties in with lyrics. We use a lot of metaphors (especially about nature) so you may use vibrato when you're singing about rippling water or heat that shimmers etc... (often accompanied by shaking hands action called wiriwiri). Similarly, if your composition discusses fear you may use vibrato to produce the effect of an accelerated heart rate. And sometimes you just use it because it's the right time to use it, like everyone else. I heard an old mōteatea (chant) once about an earthquake that caused severe distress for the ancestors of the people relaying it. That was wailed vibrato. It's very goosebumpy.

As soon as I saw Teek in your thumbnail I knew exactly what your reaction was gonna be. And I was 100% correct. Isn’t he just insane? I remember hearing him for the first time and having a similar reaction. Unique voices like his reminds me why music is so visceral and endlessly astounding.

I just stumbled across Teeks today on Vevo, and OMG! The depth and richness of his voice literally stopped me in my tracks. Haunting, captivating, soul-stirring; his voice is all that and then some. "Old Soul", I feel best describes him. I definitely get the feeling that this guy has been here before. I am totally "fanned" out!

After discovering Stan Walker, Kaiit, and now TEEKS - nothing from New Zealand surprises me anymore. The talent...soulfulness...harmonic perfection...musicianship... it's all there. What does shock me, is the number of people still unaware of these singers. Especially on this (U.S) side of the water. For this reason, I very rarely listen to radio anymore - American radio particularly, is a closed off, tunnel visioned, mess of boring.. repitition and sameness that favors certain "artists" over others playlist after playlist. Programmers have no interest whatsoever in discovering fresh, groundbreaking talent. Especially from other parts of this huge world. I thank the God of Music for platforms like KZbin - I've found so many new artists that will never be heard otherwise.

We don't really have singing comps down here in Aotearoa like you do in the states and in the UK - our amazing singers just make it on their own - with the exception of Stan who won Australian Idol but man would've been huge without it anyway. You should also check out Katchafire
