One nice thing about squid surge is going up a wall that's not fully painted (as a brush main, this is quite useful) because most times painting all the way to the top is a pain. On critial situations, it helps a lot

If you’re afraid of practicing in pvp I really recommend playing salmon run at high hazard levels to implement all these movements options naturally when playing against real players! Some situations and even some bosses even encourage the player to implement these new options to beat them ie: Smashin lid: squid roll to bait the attack and expose the pilot. Fish stick: squid surge to get up fast/or compensate a weapon with low inking range. The squid roll in general is amazing to tank strong hits from cohocks, other lesser salmons and the missiles from the infamous fly fish! Practicing over and over will become second nature in ANY game mode and your gameplay will change dramatically for the better.

I agree, but my issue is that I squid roll often in Salmon run, but I always forget to implement it in ranked for some reason. I think part of it is that I'm too used to sub strafing from Splatoon 2 where we didn't have squid rolling as an option.

I think "Squid Hopping" should be called "Main Strafeing" because of how similar it is to Sub Strafeing. It's also confusing because you aren't actually pressing the jump button so "hopping" doesn't really make sense.

I’m pretty sure in splatoon 1, squid hopping was where you need to quickly traverse enemy ink, so you hop in and out of the enemy ink, only painting your feet. Good for covering intermediate distances or when you know enemies will be shooting at you and therefore covering your escape route.
@drunkfur

Note for squid roll: you also get a slight boost in your ink refill!! So it can be extremely useful when using it regularly in matches because you're less likely to get caught with no ink.

Salmon Run is a very good way to practice sub strafing, since failing at the technique results in very little punishment. Hold R right as you touch a golden egg, then hold ZL and swim the opposite direction once it's on your back. When doing this for long enough, you'll eventually condition yourself to sub strafe in multiplayer as well.

I desperately want the devs to start designing more ways for players to utilize squid roll wall jumping- so much untapped potential that I thought Flounder Heights was going to deliver. As you mentioned we see it in small instances on certain maps, but I'd love for there to be a map where they simply make that the gimmick.

Squid hopping can also and should also be utilized with dualies, especially Squelcher Dualies, in order to still fight while recovering ink. It'll slow down the time to kill and drastically nerf accuracy, so dodge rolls are still the preferred movement option, but I've gotten out of several sticky situations personally by implementing the movement I'd use on shooters into my dualie game play as well, when low on ink. Dualies essentially can take any of these movements and combine them with their dodge rolls for much more effective evasion

Something I learned from ProChara, this Strafe Jumping (26:12) is actually rather useful for Dynamo, as you can pair it with a HORIZONTAL swing, giving you something of a lunge. This is the only roller it works with, and the timing window to get a horizontal swing instead of a vertical swing is pretty tight, but not so much that it is inconsistent to pull it off.

Squid surging is pretty good for rollers I think because you can start the flick before the surge is done and use the momentum to have a full range shot as soon as you’re over the ledge, takes some practice but pretty satisfying

ledge cancelling works because when you come out of squid form your hitbox momentarily touches the ground before you go back into squid form. I found what helps me is thinking about it like a crouch jump from other games, where u input for the crouch, in this case for kid form at the height you would be able to clear the ledge.

There's also "wall jumping" which is performed by squid rolling off of a wall. It isn't something that you would usually use in a fight, but it can be a good mixup option if the enemy engages you while you're climbing a wall. There are also a few shortcuts that you can perform with this, such as the one on Mahi Mahi that allows you to go from bottom mid to top mid.

Regarding the Squid Surge: I don't really play much of the standard multiplayer modes, but I play a lot of Salmon Run, and the Squid Surge is really useful for climbing walls while you're being targeted by Tenta Missles, which happens a lot cause Flyfish are a bitch. The extra armor you get has saved my ass more times than I can count (mostly cause the one-hit kill hotboxes are such a pain), and I would assume this defensive utility of the Squid Surge also applies to Tenta Missles in the regular modes.

A tip to speed up your squidroll usage! Squidrolling at a 90degree angle will make your movement much quicker, as you aren’t wasting time moving in a direction you don’t want to go. Why waste time going left for a few frames if you want to squidroll right, straight back the way you were just escaping? Try swimming back, then to the side instead, this will put even more distance from your starting point. This can be done in all directions, opening up that 90degree angle all across your movement. Becoming comfortable with these quick angles to squidroll will speed up your application of this very creative technique! LONG LIVE SQUIDROLL!!!

The squid roll forward control camera is heavily helpful as I was not too consistent with it. Sub strafing is a thing I did in two but I did not utilize it much and now that squid roll is a thing I have no reason to use sub strafing unless I am in bid ha ha. The squid roll jump and shoot is something I can practice as I did not know that was a thing. Great informative video.

This is a little movement tech I thought up of myself but have never seen anyone else do before (is surprisingly helpful but niche) When you're swimming in ink you only need the littlest amount of momentum in the opposite direction to execute a squid roll. It is so little in fact that you could squid roll backward with the inkbrush by simply holding ZR and "brush rushing," going into ink, then executing a squid roll immediately. Now take that principal and add sub strafing to it. In the narrow angle at which you can't squid roll you can create the tiniest amonut of possible momentum then execute a squid roll in the form of sub strafing. I'd need to record myself doing it (if anyone in replies asks) but basically you sub strafe back then roll forward immediately after. Uses include - Getting away from flanks with weapons such as chargers and splatings - escaping a pressured area when you have cover and need invincibility frames - speeding up movement when splatdashing (niche use since most of the time doing 45 degree angle squid rolls are faster) - getting up a thin wall where you don't have time to reposition (such as being pressured near basket at sockeye)

TIP FOR SQUID ROLLING FORWARD and squid rolling in general!!! while you’re swimming forward, quickly rotate your left stick in the opposite direction that you’re rolling in a complete circle! Hit the jump button while your stick is just about to complete the rotation. This stick movement accounts for the angle you need to start your roll in order to roll forward, and it accounts for the aerial correction after you roll to continue forward. If you do it fast enough it will be indistinguishable from a normal forward squid roll. I highly recommend you try this trick, i discovered it myself and it has made squid rolling significantly easier.

I tried practicing squid roll in Salmon Run and ran into a problem. After the roll you're facing the camera, meaning you can't see what's in front of you. That means I can't tell if there are any little meanies coming towards me. I need to be able to squid roll and then orient the camera without slowing down. I tried a few different things in the lobby to overcome this, but everything I tried felt like it was slowing me down. Eg. execute the roll, reorient with Y and then flip the left stick in the opposite direction of the roll: this works but in my testing it typically acted like a turn, slowing me down for a second or two. The other way I tried was just turning the camera with the right stick after the jump. The only way this seems to work is to smoothly turn the right & left sticks in opposite directions at the same time. How do you all handle that or do you just not worry about it?

It sounds like you are using Stick Controls only there. Since i use Gyro its not a problem since when i roll i can turn the camera with either motion and gyro pretty seamlessly.
