Let me just explain that the light being further away only makes it "smaller" relatively to the subject, which will cast harder shadows and harder spotlights. What makes shadows longer, or shorter, is the angle. What probably misled you at 4:14 is, for exemple: if you have a light at 1.20m high and you move it further away it will indeed make the shadows longer, but because the angle changes. If you want the same lenght of shadow, but harder, just move further and raise it. If you want longer shadows just lower the light, there is no need to bring it further away. Well, I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the clarification, I wasn't in fact "misled" as you suggest, like you said, moving it further away changes the angle, which has the same effect. And actually, moving it further away doesn't "only" make it smaller, it also makes it less powerful due to the inverse square law, so when working with artificial light you will either need to increase the power of the light, or change your camera settings to compensate for the loss of power.

I was thinking the same. A more straight angle gives long shadows just like during sunset.

@@LaurenCarisShort I just re-watched this video and I am sending you high five for loving the hard light! Big fan of it! I am shooting in direct sunlight and it is so adrenaline filled hahaha. Shooting in sun in summer is like riding wild horses 🤭🤷💯💯

I would like to add one thing for the photo at 2:49 the main subject should be more brighter than the background. In this photo it's opposite, the behind glass is looking brighter than the front main glass and the main glass is looking dull.

And don't put same thing besides the main subject. Put something different and also u should use depth of field. Because you wanna highlight the main subject and not other things.
