Or at least that it got a proper sequel system, like an HD3DS. I would've loved to have 3D gameplay in a higher resolution. Heck, even just 480p would've been a massive upgrade that would've made games look really clean on screens of similar size. And with the 3D, that would've been awesome, especially if games could get 60fps more consistently with it on. Link Between Worlds looks super crisp with the 3D on

@@jcc4543 Switch is one of Nintendo's worst consoles. Don't get me wrong, the library is insanely good, but the features of the console itself are all half baked. They're just presented really well and that top tier marketing made it a success. Let's be real: No browser function still in 2024, their eShop is literally just a straight reverse chronological list with no real sorting options without doing a specific search and sales (and who knows how that is sorted), they don't have any in-build social media that even the New 3DS got with Miiverse (short lived as it was), the gimmick is something that in Nintendo's best estimates is used maybe 20% of the time and most people either leave it docked or undocked 100% of the time, there is no way for players to adjust the strength of the rumble that was a major feature at launch and has since been nerfed on a system level because of some early complaints that the rumble was too strong making it far less noticeable and still no user control, the joy cons have drift, the d-pads on the pro controllers notoriously read incorrect inputs when moving from side to side unlike basically any other Nintendo console, the early systems had a ventilation/heating issue that caused the grills to crack for many players, not to mention they used nonstandard powering rates that caused many third party docks to brick the console cause of their weird choice, and for 4 years, the console got less first party exclusive games than the Wii U in the same equivalent years (made up for somewhat with Wii U ports, but that also does nothing for the most loyal fans who didn't even get a way to upgrade at a discount). Really, even from a games perspective the Switch didn't hit its stride until 2021 or so. The pricing has been the most egregious Nintendo's ever done (except for Metroid Prime Remaster which was a very unusually good deal by any standards), the Switch pro controller is lost the insane battery life advantage the Wii U pro controller had while costing $20 more, they started charging for online and barely improved it, even removing voice chat from the console, which even the Wii had. No folder system for the longest time and now they did some alternative that is basically a collection of wish lists that reference the games but they aren't accessible from the home menu, you need to go to the full app menu first, which is really weird for a console designed around being snappy. No price drops, no Nintendo selects or equivalents, no themes and barely anything that could be considered a customization option outside of profile icons, and no system level music in any of the system apps or homepage. It can't even. On a more personal note, I hate that they switched to offset thumb sticks. I loved the parallel sticks on the Wii U, felt like it gave the console a bit more character and made d-pad controlled games feel a bit more natural as a benefit. A unique niche that they fully abandoned for the Xbox standard, and this just makes it even harder to go between other consoles and the Switch because the button layout is the same for both and that triggers muscle memory when I switch between Xbox/PC and Switch that the alternate layout actually helped mitigate for me. I'll admit that's mostly personal preference and a multi-platforn gamer issue than console itself issue, so that's why it's in its own section here. Also the handheld mode is just plain the least comfortable a Nintendo handheld has ever been with that flat back and the weight of it. Sure, third party options help, but that's more of a point against the system for me Personally, what I can say is that the Switch got me playing other consoles and non-Nintendo games than any of their prior consoles, and I lived through the Wii U years and stopped buying the 2D platformers by the time DK:TF came out, so I did not have much to play back then. I was not that way with the Switch and yet it still got me away from Nintendo games more than that. When I realized that, I realized the Switch is just not a console I enjoy much despite my time on it and vast library for it.

I love these 'Forgotten games' videos, I've been watching a lot of them lately. There are a lot of game critics out there, both professional and just regular gamers, so eager to declare something is garbage because it has a single flaw, or call a game dead because it's player base dropped from 1 million players down to "only" 100,000, etc. And the game industry itself is so obsessed with "newer and better" that anything more than 5 years old is treated like it doesn't exist any more.... It's nice to just hear a more positive take instead, to hear about some of the games we've missed due to the overwhelming noise of the industry, some older games that are still fun to play, even if they're not perfect, they're still fantastic games that some game artists put a lot of work into.

I think the 3DS is the most underrated video game console of the 2010's. There's such a mixture of reactions to it to this day, the most positive being for the XL versions which are easier to handle overall and make the 3D much easier to view and enjoy with less strain on the eyes.

I never used one back in the day, but in more recent years bought a used 'New' 3DS XL to mod and install a Commodore 64 emulator on (great device for that), and started discovering the excellent games library available for it. Built up a good collection of physical games (3DS and DS), although resorted to less legitimate means to get other games thanks to the ever-rising prices for physical versions, and some just being rare or never available in cartridge form. I still look to add to the collection when I come across a decently-priced game I don't have and looks interesting. I have since added a Galaxy style New 3DS XL as I like the look of that. Rare to see in the UK as it wasn't officially released here. Brilliant little console. I wish there was a more modern equivalent with the dual-screen clamshell setup. I have Codename Steam and Fantasy Life in cartridge format, plus a non-legit copy of Ace Combat (the later + version tends to be tricky to find and expensive if you do).

The New 3DS non-XL may be less comfy to hold than the XL version, but the extra pixel density can really make some games a lot more crisp to play and the 3D effect looks a lot better on it, in my opinion. I always felt like the XL scaled up the X and Y axis, but they didn't scale up the 3D Z axis with it, so the 3D always felt muted on the XLs to me. Decent, but not quite as good as they could be

Back then the only reason to own Ironfall Invasion was for an exploit that helped homebrew 3DSs. It was also the same reason why folks would purchase Cubic Ninja, an exploit was found using the QR code scanning feature which would cause a buffer overflow to happen allowing folks to run custom hardware on their 3DSs. Both Cubic Ninja and Ironfall Invasion were pulled from the 3DS eShop briefly to prevent others from downloading the games just to run an exploit. Ironfall Invasion was eventually put back up and was given a patch that automatically comes with recent downloads which makes the exploit for the game unusable even if an older version of the game is available, unfortunately Cubic Ninja is still unavailable digitally although its listing is still on the 3DS eShop it says "Available at your local retailer". That said, the exploit for Cubic Ninja still works but requires multiple QR codes to be scanned due to the web services for Cubic Ninja being revoked once system update 11.0 came out which also patched tons of homebrew exploits including Cubic Ninja's exploit, hence why the web services for Cubic Ninja got revoked. But enough about why Ironfall Invasion had a brief period of popularity, I have a few recommendations of my own for games that rarely get mentioned. First, Senran Kagura Burst and Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson. Both games are pretty much digital only these days with Senran Kagura Burst being *only* digital (at least in the US) and the sequel having both physical and digital releases worldwide but good luck finding a physical copy for cheap online. Both games are 2.5D side-scrolling, beat-em-ups starting anime girls with big booba. Senran Kagura Burst and its sequel may have different ratings, but both are for mature audiences and not for children and also the kind of games you'd need headphones to play in public. Second, the Denpa Men series. All three games have the main feature of traveling through locations in the real world to collect creatures called "Denpa Men", kinda like Pokémon GO but before the game existed. Catching Denpa Men is also difficult to how Pokémon handles it. Instead of using balls, you use nets. You can only catch so many Denpa Men at once before you need to accept or release the Denpa Men you've captured and depending on how long you linger in a city you can get rare Denpa Men that have special antennas. Usually something like boosting item drop rates or how much gold you'll get. Also for some reason they use text-to-speech software for the main character but everyone else talks ala Mario & Luigi style. Third, Kirby's Deluxe spinoffs. After the success of Kirby Triple Deluxe and seeing how much folks enjoyed the side games included in Kirby 3D and in 2014 HAL Labs made Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, both are reasonably cheep yet both have hours of content and going for platinum medals/trophies is a really tough challenge many can enjoy. In 2017, following the success of Kirby Planet Robobot, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Kirby Blowout Blast were released. The latter released in July while the former was released in April. Unlike the other three games, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe was the first time Kirby was made into a free-to-pay game. Unlike its spiritual sequel, Super Kirby Clash, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe has a limit of 3,000 Gem Apples that can be purchased with real money, after those 3,000 are purchased no more can be bought and the Gem Apple Tree will be at max level giving 450 Gem Apple every 12 hours. It's recommended to buy all 3,000 Gem Apples or else it'll take roughly three years to beat the game due to the Gem Apples required to unlock later quests.

I’ve played a few of these myself and have to agree that there are some pretty great titles here. Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball is a really different game. Though the baseball minigames are each and their own fun to complete, the huge sticking point that makes the game stand out all takes place in Rusty’s shop. Rusty manages to tell a good story, and it’s a treat that will be a home run with fans who are familiar with old school Nintendo, before they even made video games. The game is also packed with little details that go a long way. It’s an experience that I don’t think will be the same without the haggling down prices with real money combined with in-game coupons, (which should approximately total out to $16 dollars factoring the best haggle deals) so it’s a bummer to see its spirit die with the Eshop. Now Codename S.T.E.A.M. may even be my favorite title on the entire Nintendo 3DS - post alien speed patch of course. The standard 3DS has a toggle for x2 speed, while the New 3DS gets x3 speed amongst other additional QoL enhancements, but playing on either system is ultimately good either way. Codename S.T.E.A.M. didn’t feel like a title that Nintendo wanted to shove in everyone’s face to reach an expected sales quota for that year. Instead, the game felt like it was a developer's passion project that managed to get the greenlight to actually be made into a reality. Codename S.T.E.A.M. is to tactics games, what Classic Paper Mario is to traditional RPGs. Considering how many developers worked on both games, I think that was exactly the goal. Both games simplify the mechanics of the core gameplay loop, starting you out with the limited, basic methods of combat, and eventually expand the range of playstyles to an near infinite degree with new characters, perks, and attacks that you are in charge of experimenting with. Not to mention, the luck factor notorious in both genres takes a far back seat in both games, making the player's skill of executing the attacks take the spotlight. It’s funny how both games take what effectively is their genre that they redefine, and evolve them into what are basically action based puzzle games with visual aesthetics based on cartoon books. Like Paper Mario did to me and RPG’s, Codename S.T.E.A.M. was the game that finally got me to start trying other tactics games to see how it held up in comparison to them, and I eventually got into Advance Wars, Xcom, and I did try out the GBA Fire Emblem titles because of it. After playing a lot of different strategy games, I came back to Codename S.T.E.A.M. to see if it held up, and again, just like Paper Mario had done with RPGs, I personally think Codename S.T.E.A.M. stands out of the bunch for how it takes its own strides to make itself feel smarter and less luck dependent, more structurally unique, and just full of character all around. Codename S.T.E.A.M. can go under $5 loose at local game stores, and if you see it, it’s such an easy snag for what you can get out of it. If you go in without any expectations given it’s a new IP from Intelligent Systems and are up for solving a tough yet fair challenge, Codename S.T.E.A.M. and all its glorious one liners are probably going to stick with you for a while. - Noah

I love Ace Combat. The weird thing is that rather than releasing an update, Nintendo launched the plus version on a second (physical) game, with amiibo support, so is much better to get that late version.

Protect Me Knight/Gotta Protectors is slept on so hard by so many people. I loved playing the game back on the Xbox 360 and couldn’t wait for the 3DS sequel to come out. Unfortunately the series isn’t as much as a hit as I see it as though :/ Thanks for putting one of my favorites in here. It means a lot.

0:04 - C'mon, Fossil Fighters Frontier was right there and you didn't end up talking about it! Spectacular video here giving so many 3DS games their much needed attention. I was particularly pleased to see Dillon's Rolling Western get promoted; it is an awesome series that I wish more people could experience (the 3rd game in the series is easily amongst my favourite 3DS games). Fantasy Life is also a great game that more folks should experience. I was also surprised to see games featured here that I had never even heard of myself. I tend to be somewhat familiar with obscure games, at least outside of the PC scene, but the likes of Rage of the Gladiator, Return to Popolocrois and Moon Chronicles were unknown entities to me. Cool to learn of them.

Fairune (series) - it is Hylide but with modern gaming sensibilities to make it a shot and tight polished gaming experience. You explore and grind a bit to continued if needed. Not only does it tell what you what to grind, that is often a clue of where to go next. Dark Legend of the Witch (series) - this a shooty arcade platformer similar to the ones on the PC-Engine e.g. "Dragon Egg!", "Chiki Chiki Boys". But you have Megaman Bosses with weapon acquisition and Gradius upgrades (speed, missile, double/laser, options.)

Just wondering, is there a reason why you don’t have the title of the game pasted in the corner during the whole clip like you did in other vids? I used to really like it, it helped me remember titles to check out and was easier to screenshot for later. But I understand if there’s an added benefit to not having them.

I played that mobile game Honestly it's not as bad as you think It's basically Fantasy Life but with a city builder. It has the open world but it also has instance-based dungeons too. It's grindy as hell though, and there's this feeling of you're always underpowered if you don't pay up. And yeah it has gacha mechanics too And last but not the least, it's Japan exclusive, I know some Japanese so it's not much of a problem for me, but you're probably going to be lost if you don't know the language
