Very cool to see! Thanks so much for doing this. The urban areas of Barcelona look really amazing for bikes, not just in the bike infrastructure, but in the lively street life and the priority put on humans rather than automobiles. I think we can learn a lot from your city, especially those of us in North America. Great video!

Great that it's catching on, and the community is uniting in finding commonalities and differences across the world. Maybe a website could be dedicated to +1/-2 and anyone can participate to rank their own cities or locations, and everything can be displayed on a big fancy colour-coded map...!

That's true, in the end the score is a little bit arbitrary and we paid a lot of attention to details. Having said this, I find Barcelona similar to bike as Washington DC, where we lived for a year (and both BCN and DC infinitely better than Los Angeles, where we lived for a few years!)

The game is really nice to discuss the real situation in a city, however totally biased: as Shifter and NJB both used very different points, as you did. Glad to see that Barcelona has so many bike-paths now... the total inconsistency of them will decrease once the city designers are allowed to use more street space for bikes. I would add -2 for having too many traffic lights, and +20 for being such a pleasant, dense human city.

@@willekevanderham5326 I'm curious why? In Barcelona my sensation is the opposite. If you're on the left, car drivers see you directly, not through the mirror. And inside the roundabout there's no cars turning towards the bike lane.

@@jordigomezsuay Drivers expect slower traffic on their right (in right driving countries like Spain) and being on the other side will make for one kind of dangerous when getting to street crossings and at the end of the cyclepath. And when you have to enter the roundabout and leave it, you will have to cross the car lane both times, out of a position from which you can not oversee the traffic as well. I have been on plenty of Dutch two way cycle paths on the left of the cars and when they end and you have to cross traffic to continue on the right you have to be extra carefull.

@@willekevanderham5326 Mmmmmhhhhh I'm trying and I cannot think of places in Barcelona where "left goes quicker" and left turn is allowed and there's a left bike lane. Actually the left turn alone already makes it a mess for the cars even without bikes and there's very few streets like that. About the roundabout, indeed you cross more car lanes going on the outside than the inside. And the ones you cross are the ones turning out of the roundabout, which can take you more by surprise than the ones inside.

We actually lived in D.C. for a year (and biked regularly). It has a few nice features, like the Rock Creek path. @@BikingBarcelonaTogether There was some (SOME!) progress made during the pandemic, with a few protected paths being expanded and (gasp!) connected. But this has been far, far too uncommon. Every little thing that gets done is sung about in the press like it was moving a mountain, yet we keep having little kids hit & killed by speeding motorists. The same people who just appeared on the news to say how amazing it was that they extended a bike path ONE extra block wring their hands and ask, "what can be done?" about the deaths. And the local news keeps blaming the children & cyclists for drivers hitting them.

@@matthewconstantine5015 That is really maddening. I (Anna) felt like Washington D.C. was absolutely amazing for bicycles (after five years in Los Angeles). What drove me nuts was when bike lanes ended suddenly right before a busy intersection; as Jedidjah said, I definitely planned my commutes around not catching any of those. But I feel like there is a similar sentiment here, in that many folks (and media and organizations) oppose all these changes and think that pedestrians killed or injured by motorists are somehow an unchangeable, permanent state of the world. And definitely they blame cyclists for anything that may happen to us. Hopefully this changes soon in both cities.

I lived in D.C. from 1980 to 2003 and even cycled in the AIDS Ride from North Carolina to D.C. Back then, I thought D.C. had pretty decent bicycle paths and regularly cycled to my workplaces in Alexandria and Silver Spring. Now having lived in the Netherlands the last 10 years or so, I see how terrible and dangerous it actually was. Even when I took the scenic Rock Creek Parkway, I was often only a few inches away from cars passing me at more than 60 kmh. Even the cycling paths that had no cars were in such bad shape and had so many pedestrians that I'd often have to go back to the road to cycle at speed. Recent videos and reports from my cycling friends in D.C. show that not much has changed and too many have lost close friends to cycling accidents.

Fantastic. Barcelona is making a real effort to make city more livable. the scores given seemed very personal in some cases, especially in the case of women, sometimes they didn't even have to do with infrastructure for bicycles. in addition I think the final score does not represent the effort the city has made, this is due to the human nature of complaining more than praising. but just for the record... if this game were played in Portugal the average score in any city would be -200, in Porto in particular it would be -1000 😥

At 8:25 I'd give minus one for each of the red sticks LOL - we have had similar placed on some of our roads in Ipswich (UK) and it always *feels* like you're going to catch your pedal or handlebar on them - I do, however, love your low-lying lumps shown on earlier lanes. And watching this has certainly put Barcelona on my bucket list of places to visit - time to start studying a bit of Catalan - aunque estoy seguro que mi inglés y español servirían.

You will definitely be able to navigate the city with English and Spanish only, but the locals definitely appreciate it if you try some Catalan, at least "bon dia" or "adéu" :-) Also, the red sticks are not tall enough to catch a handlebar, but I definitely rode far enough from them to not bump with my pedal either; it's true it sometimes looks like they're too close (especially because the lane is so narrow).

The great thing about compact cities (and not so compact cities) is that there are decades of experience available via the Netherlands. City planners do not have to re-invent the wheel. I'd say it is a great time for city planners from the Netherlands to branch out to other countries, or the Netherlands offering consultation to other cities in other countries so that biking can become just a means of transport, not biking. Barcelona, the city I plan on moving to 2022...COVID dependant.

Thank you for sharing. Seeing this from a Dutch perspective, I think the score is very optimistic. Far to many traffic lights and all those dangerous obstacles (poles) on the bike lanes and the very narrow bike lanes, sometimes stealing the space for pedestrians. But is is a start and better than nothing. If Barcelona continues the good work, it will get better hopefully.

the car at 5.11 has a pretty poor turn overall. His view is largely blocked by the plants and the scooters. Plus due to a relatively tight turn he can't really see bicycles until he is quite far in the turn. I think a bit more separation between the bike lane and the car here would have done better. Or remove the plants and shorten the scooter parking a little to clear up the view in the mirrors. Ultimately its still a driver error, but one that could be easier to avoid with some slight tweaks in the bikelane or parking.

Non-expert from Barcelona with some personal opinions: 0:22 +1 for the mixed use. When I saw the video in Amsterdam and thought how would it look in Barcelona, my first thought was that hardware stores for small stuff are reachable on foot. 3:41 +1 for continuous improvement. 15 years ago that bike lane was mixed with pedestrians and it was the best in the city. Now it's rebuilt because of better security standards. In general Barcelona's bike infraestructure is a big trial and error that doesn't stick too much with bad decisions. 5:07 -2 for lesson not learnt. Pedestrians cross the bicycle lane without visibility because of parked cars, and that already caused one famous deathly accident (Muriel Casals) 10:15 I disagree with the -2 on the signal. But so far those signals are exceptions and it's hard to go from A to B through the safest route if you don't know well the streets in advance with all its tricks, so that's a different -2.

Would be great if all the channels that will follow would only give points for bike infrastructure. As I think that was the main goal for Not Jut Bikes and Shifter. Giving points for buildings and other non-infrastructure things is a bit silly. It deviates from the original idea and also blurs the actual infrastructure experience.

Wow, that is some really good bike infrastructure! My home country of Switzerland, which is supposedly "bike-friendly", is decades away from that! And my home town even more so. There's barely any bike infrastructure, and when there is some, they're usually disconnected and badly implemented. La veritat es que no sabria com dir " to get doored" en català però suposo que dir menjar-se una porta seria potser la traducció més adient?

Sí, sembla la traducció més natural. Gràcies!

From Barcelona here. I know this is in good's spirits but the scoring and many of the observations were obnoxious. A good city keep everyone mildly annoyed, never anyone discriminated. We cannot get rid of the car and instead have bike highways everywhere specially so when most bikers are also assholes and use pedestrian infrastructure without police batting an eye. The city is first and foremost for pedestrians and bikes and escooters should be second class. You cannot ask for "more better stronger" before teaching people how to use current infrastructure properly and making good management of it. Most of the "Tactical urbanism" the current mayorship implemented is badly and hastly thought and thrown in the city, destroying its visual appeal, and severely underused because it's placed for political, not social, effect. Many of the bikelines too. Old cars are increasingly being banned from downtown, the authorities pushing working class citizens to spend 30k on a electric car because no alternatives better train infrastructure is being worked on, public transport gets more and more expensive as the city inequality grows more extreme. There's a push for electrification yet barely any public electric infrastructure exists within the city itself, etc... Barcelona goes above and beyond to accommodate bikers yet nobody seems to be satisfied at all and traffic in the poorer access areas is getting worse because of the posher neighbors like Gracia or Eixample closing down their streets to traffic. Where do you think upgoing traffic from Gran de Gràcia is being rerouted? Maragall and Fabra i Puig, both bordering poor neighbourhoods are getting twice the traffic than before. This current trend is classist and mismanaged and asking for "more" won't solve it.

Love your channel - and the offering of the perspective of both a man and a woman adds a lot! My wife and I ride our bikes extensively, and we very much applaud the viewpoints your provide. We are seeing many well-intentioned efforts by cities to improve bicycle infrastructure here in North America. Some of the "new" infrastructure works well, some not so well. Unfortunately, our traffic engineers in the U.S (I was one of them for many years!) have failed us. Although well intentioned too, architects, landscape architects and urban planners in the U.S. have not done any better. We are in desperate need for our universities in North America to develop education and training programs for modern transportation for our cities, a "Complete Streets" type approach, with standards that are safe and work for all right of way users. In the dark void of knowledge, your channel is a shining light.

Thank you for your kind comment! (this is the other half of this channel, I also wanted to thank you personally). Hopefully North America will start to get less car-centric, but there is so, so much work to do in some cities and areas. Also thank you for the honesty of outing yourself as a former traffic engineer; I hope your kindness translated into human-centric improvements in your city or town.

@@BikingBarcelonaTogether Haha, I like to think I am more of a "reformed" traffic engineer, (a la Charles Marohn of Strong Towns). I spent the last 25 years of my career working in transportation in the field of waterborne transportation - as in ferries. Where the pedestrian and bicycle modes are super important. Then I retired as my wife and I downsized to one vehicle and ride our bikes. After thousands and thousands of miles (kilometers) riding my on the road, my perspective of "traffic engineering" has been turned upside down. We are now moving to a small town in the mountains of Idaho - where we will rattle the cages of State and local "traffic engineers" . . . .
