Yeah, it's an oddity of the starter kit - the full kit includes the correct blanking plate.

Hey you did it!! Cracking build and an excellent quality finish given the insane time limit. I was far more invested in wanting you to succeed with this challenge... having recommended the kit I would've felt personally responsible if you'd found it to be a complete howler! Apologies for not watching and replying sooner, I've subscribed and set notifications but FB does tend to bury stuff these days. So the acid (and very unfair) test would be for me to compare your build against the same kit that I built with no time pressures... Actually you win easily, mine is still unpainted!! Maybe seeing your build will boost my flagging modelling mojo enough to pick it up again.

A really well done video. Amazing sound editing and the pace of it was perfect to show each step and what you were doing but not make it take any longer than it needed do. The end product was amazing considering the time spent hand would look great on any wargame table.

Great Video, really enjoyed the 1hr builds. I think the Sherman was a much easier project to tackle over the FW190. suggestion I have for a future idea for a quick kit in a way. Painting the unbuilt Airfix kit on the sprues for display. A guy at my local club did the 1/72 mustang and I’m considering doing a A-4Q Skyhawk the same way. Painted, Decals applied and still on the sprues in a picture frame.

Impressive results for the lunacy of the time constraint. I remember about twenty years ago, I participated in a Fine Scale Modeler forum online challenge of Mad Tiger Day, building a Tiger tank in not one but twenty-four hours. I went with a 1/72 Dragon kit, and with the extra twenty-three hours, about the only think that would separate my Tiger from your Firefly is a proper job on the track painting and a three-color camo. Much like you swearing off any subsequent one-hour challenges, I to have foregone building to an artificially timed constraint.

I'm sure the Bolt Action guys must be all thumbs up. You can get a whole tank section completed in a single afternoon this way. Well done, Alex. I think the One Hour Challenge can be beaten successfully with the proper kit. Alas, it's a stress I'd never choose to go through. Have a great weekend, mate.

Your One-Hour-Challenge build looks pretty good. As you say, it won't win any IPMS contests. But I think it's still a nice piece that would be right at home on a wargaming table. That said, I still think a better 'personal challenge' is the Weekend Build, or a Weeklong Build. But as long as you had fun; that's the point of the hobby.

Fun video. How about a video of doing an older model old-style, eg brushes and enamels only for painting (no acrylics, no air brush), separate suspension and vinyl tracks? To allow for the differences you could have 100 minutes . . .

As I said with the aircraft build - two hours would still be fast and that would have given you enough time to address the detail painting that you didn't have time for. I might use a version of this - maybe an 'afternoon' or 'evening' build as a bit of fun in the middle of something that's complicated and demanding.

Unfortunately, a "2 hour challenge" is not a catchy KZbin title, and we are slaves to both people's whims and the YT algorithm. If people don't click on a video, ot doesn't get recognised and is quickly buried - sad but true

Hi. Made it this time. I would suppose that the way to model quickly is to take a tip from athletes and practice. EG built the kit of choice and become familiar with where the bits go and what needs cleaning up and your assembly order so you can save the milli seconds of looking at the plans. What got more paint, kit or fingers? Nice bit of entertainment.

Hi I may be wrong but I don’t think the Firefly had a hull machine gun as it was plated over to allow more space for ammo. Nice build this would have taken me a week, lol

You're right - it's an error with the starter kit...I just built it as it came. Airfix corrected this in the stand-alone version of the kit.

Most of the kits I built as a kid, including (if I remember right) a Matchbox Sherman Firefly, were built in about an hour. Without paint. And looking a whole lot less impressive than this. :-)

Hull machine gun on a Firefly ? Is this Airfix's mistake ? Very quick build indeed. Ive still got a 1/35 Firefly that's so far taken 7 years to build and now it's just left in it's box. It only needs the finalities doing, but I've lost heart with it.😂
@modelermark172
@modelermark172 Жыл бұрын
My guess is that Airfix wants to use the basic hull for other Sherman kits, and they figure that modelers concerned about this minor inaccuracy would cover the hull machine gun mount with a layer of sandbags, or something. But this is easily fixed. I remember in the mid-1970's when Monogram came out with their 1/32nd scale Shermans using the lower hull from their earlier M3 Lee/Grant kit that used an earlier suspension than the one needed for the later M4 Sherman. Master Diorama Builder Shep Paine noted this inaccuracy on his included diorama tip sheets, giving a quick tutorial on how to update the Sherman suspension. As for your 1/35th Firefly; we've all been there. Maybe this build video will inspire you to take a second look, and finish your model.
@MannsModelMoments
@MannsModelMoments Жыл бұрын
Yes, the hull mg is an Airfix error - it's shown on both the box art, the instructions and some models, though interestingly the CAD renders shown it correctly ommitted. As @modelermark172 mentions, easily corrected but I just built it as it came.

A Firefly with American markings! I wish the Americans had adopted the 17 pounder or a reasonable facsimile, because the 17pndr was superior to the 76mm on later Shermans! Yeah, I know it's just a model, but it's historically inaccurate!

I took a 1:72 Spitfire kit to a mate's house one day and was determined to build and paint it for him in the space of an afternoon visit (about 3 hrs) and I almost did! And I'm no expert like Mr Mann here 😊 No airbrush, either - just cheap flat brushes from the kiddy crafting range available from The Range. My second quick build visit with a 1:72 Folland Gnat using just the supplied paints, brush and glue was a disaster in comparison...!
Can I make and paint an Airfix kit in just 1 Hour?
