I'm not a saw miller, but I am a woodworker. Here is my thoughts on crooked logs. Cut the log into the straightest pieces you can and still be able to lock it down on the mill. Then saw up the short pieces into whatever you want. You are not sawing framing lumber or siding. Cabinet grade hardwoods don't need to be 8', 6', or even 4'. When making stuff in the wood shop, it all gets cut into short pieces anyway. I have watched so many videos where people throw away good crooked logs or they try to saw a 8' cant out of a crooked log and waste more useable hardwood than what they ended up saving and sawing. That's my take on the subject. Oh, and you can lay a banana log on its side and cut it into live edge 4/4 slabs and then trim the sapwood off later. Then you see where your heartwood is and can trim accordingly. If I wasn't already 73 yrs old, I would be getting a mill of my own.
