The Curve tool have become my main tool for controlling luminosity and contrasts. When properly understood it can replace other luminosity tools, such as Luma Range etc, for the most part. Your video is a fantastic introduction into this amazing tool! Also, Dodging and Burning with specifically applied curves is a very useful way to use the Curve tool with. Not to mention targeting and changing colours, but that’s a whole other ballgame, isn’t it? When we learn how to apply specific curves on multiple layers in Capture One then the sky is the limit to what we can achieve in C1! I’m very glad that you pointed out how important it is to be aware of the difference between the RGB and Luma type of curves that C1 provides us with. As a side note; the basic Contrast slider in C1 is attempting to give a result (on colour values) somewhere in between the contrast adjustments made in the RGB curve and the Luma curve, I believe. Yet another positive side effect with the Curve tool is that it make us view the image in a more “general” way and not fall for the temptation of making too precise selections too early in the process. Instead, it helps us to remain much more general and sweeping in our approach, which I find works better in the long run. For those of us that find that we create too many artifacts and banding problems in our editing processes the Curve tool approach may very well be a good remedy for that kind of problem, as well. Thank you!

@@absolu222 👍 Thank you for your comment! I find that the Levels Tool is very useful for setting the white & black points. The mid-level (gamma) point is particularly useful for controlling the tonal values in the middle of the histogram. Note how it differ in comparison with the Brightness Slider that also work on the mid-tones in the image. Something to be aware of is to know that the Levels Tool do effect the colour saturation values though.

Excellent, thank you! It's great to see Curves used so clearly in Capture one! (usually its just Ps) Your "blue" waterfall shows up how Luma curves remove colour, rather than just stop colours being boosted, to my eyes anyway...
@AndreaLivieriPhoto7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Dominic! Glad you enjoyed the video. Actually, the Luma Curve doesn't remove colors. Since it only affects the brightness values of the image, you won't experience an increase in saturation like you would typically see when increasing contrast with the regular RGB curve.

This vid is amazing. The curves are truly underrated, but so much more powerful and clear than sliders. I’ve been watching Jan Wischermann (pro German fashion retoucher who uses C1) who swears by the curves tool. He recommends using the separate R, B, and G curves to achieve your desired color/white balance, while also making small contrast adjustments. Then once your color is set going into Luma curve for larger contrast adjustments. Then jump between those 4 for edits. Ofc no right or wrong way to be creative, but I find that advice and your video extremely helpful. +This is similar to how some video editors work in color grading DaVinci resolve: don’t use temp/kelvin sliders to achieve WB because these change all of the RGB values at once. Instead work in each channel curve for more precise intentional WB without affecting the other channels and colors in unintended/unwanted ways.

This is a very simple, realistic, yet excellent curves tutorial. I would love to see more about it, specially working with the different RGB channels. Kind regards.
