I have both C1 and LR. LR is making a lot of improvements and for now will stick with it. C1 is incredible for Fuji.
@warrenswales5693 Жыл бұрын
The other advantage of C1 over LR is how C1 has both a Sessions and a Full catalogue option. No more bloated catalogue of every single image to lug around. Just use catalogue for archive of your final images exported from each Session and set up Smart collections therein. It is a wonderful intuitive idea. And as you say, the killer that kicks LR in the dirt is the ability to use named layers for each edit and to then flex the layers strength with the opacity slider. Combine single purchase of C1 with the ridiculously under valued Affinity for your pixel editing (stitching panos, focus stacking etc) and kiss goodbye to lifelong subs where the software development returns you receive are ever decreasing for your hard earned cash.

I've always wanted to try Capture One. I also shoot landscape, mostly, and have been drawn to it more because I picked up a Fuji and people rave about it for Fuji cameras. I normally shoot Nikon though. I like the look and feel of it, and the more easy application of standard camera profiles from what I've researched. BUT, here is the reason I haven't switched and have stuck with Adobe. I work for a university in IT, and have free access to all of Adobe's programs, and I don't like the idea of jumping to Capture One for another monthly sub or a perpetual license (that eventually ends at the version number ending, which is almost yearly now...). I'm trying to get away from this whole nickle and diming but now in much higher dollar amounts that is going on with software devs attempting to fund their job, while doing less to innovate. When they do innovate, it's wonderful, but they do it so quickly in terms of attempting to end your usability of that perpetual license as soon as they can, to get more out of your wallet. That Perpetual License for $300, ends up being more than a 1 year license for monthly, because you know they are going to come out with something new to get you to have to pay. This isn't just Capture One, but every software dev it seems these days. As other jobs get devalued, they hold the prices super high and force subscriptions or constant upgrades. Basically, look at consumers paying, and if they are subscriptions mostly, slow roll content, and if they are mostly perpetual one time licenses, fast roll to increase revenue. At the same time EVERYONE is complaining about inflation of every kind, and getting annoyed when say food goes up or is intentially shorted, etc. It's all very predetory lately. Back to Adobe which is a company I loath, for all the same reasons above, but it's "free" for me. A slight benefit of a lower paying education job... With the recent upgrade to the Denoise AI in both Lightroom and Photoshop and the Photoshop's soon to be AI Generation (in beta), I'll be very happy with Lightroom, and Photoshop as my main system of editing considering it doesn't add a costly charge to my bank account as things get toughter to afford.

I switched over to C1 in 2019. I think their pace of innovation has slowed in the last year or two (probably because they were trying to get the iPhone app out), but I still think it has better tools than LR - if only just because of the ability to use Layers. For anyone looking for really good tutorials on C1, just search for David Grover or Paul Reiffer. They both do incredibly helpful videos - David is an employee of C1 and Paul in one of their Ambassadors.

Looks interesting. Probably not enough there to get me to switch, but definitely worth keeping an eye on. The two biggest drawbacks for me are the price and the smaller pool of helpful tutorials compared to the Adobe products.

If you use C1, why do you use Lightroom in all your videos?
@notdisclosed7053 Жыл бұрын
There is a lot to like about C1, but there are some areas in which it has really fallen behind the opposition, especially Lightroom, such as dealing with noise (it is years behind) and sharpening. It’s lack of a history panel is also a long-standing puzzling omission. Its colour handling is very good and once you have passed the initial learning curve, its configurable interface is satisfying to use. Above all, though, it has become very expensive and its new licensing system seems to be designed simply to milk even more out of its customers.

I've been using lightroom since 2016. I tried cap1 a couple years ago and it seemed capable. Ultimately decided that I didn't want to spend the time learning the ins and outs of another program. And, I use other parts of AdobeCC so have stuck with LR. I do suspect the competitive pressure from cap1 has pushed Adobe to really start investing in LR classic again. I have no use for the cloud LR.

I just subscribed to C1 this week, and I'm wishing I would have done it a long time ago. The more I dig into this program, the more powerful, and efficient, my workflow becomes. I've had to subscribe to a couple of programs to get the results I can with C1, so cancelling those will pay for C1. One of the biggest reasons I like C1 is the first point you brought up: the raw processing engine seems far superior to other programs. I am interested in the final quality of an image more than neon glow and all the AI stuff in other programs. I know the world is screaming for AI, but I really don't care about all of that. I don't even use catalogs or sessions, either. Thanks for posting! I learned a few tricks that will help me a LOT in my workflow.

I've been an avid C1 user for a few years. Always highly recommend it. However, one area I think it's lacking is good integration with 3rd party plugins. Maybe if the folks at C1 could reach out and work more with 3rd party developers we might see a cleaner workflow. For example, I'm editing in C1 but want to apply some effects with the Nik Collection, I need to route through Photoshop to get to the Nik module.
@MarkDenneyPhoto Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you Jared! Plugin integration is a must in my opinion
@Mark-qn9xl Жыл бұрын
I use C1 22 and NIK 5. You use the same system to edit in NIK as PS or AP. You edit a TIFF and just pick the software that you want to use. Edit in the software and save straight back to C1. As NIK can be used as standalone its not an issue. Just tried it then with Viveza 3.
@inakilauzirika5076 Жыл бұрын
Camera Raw together with Bridge and Photoshop does the job for me with Fujifilm' s and Sony's raw files. Everything's integrated, you can mask your photos miles away better in Cr than Capture One. Noise supressing new implemented feature cannot be compared to what C1 comes with... Almost every landscape photographer ends up his/her photos in Photoshop where the AI tools and - again - integration with Nik filters is the final step for that image you want to get out the best of. So sorry for C1 but Adobe's posibilities outperform the once in a time promissing editing software from Phase One.

Thanks for the video, Mark. Very interesting. I considered switching to Capture One after watching your video. Then I looked at the pricing and found it very confusing. In fact, it makes no more sense to me than the tax code does. If I can't figure out the pricing options, I doubt the software will come any easier despite a strong desire to have the two color range comparison rectangles so I can easily see the effect of my color edit. Your demonstration is effective in garnering interest. Capture One's weirdly confusing subscription model where the "perpetual license" is just another subscription variant with nothing perpetual about it, is off-putting. The takeaway for me, the software looks good. It has features that I think I would like, but the way the pricing is presented is a snakepit of deception.

Ugh. I just canceled my Capture One subscription after going back and forth between it and Bridge/ACR for a year and a half. It seemed like all of my favorite photogs, including you, had given up on C1 because every video was about Lightroom. And though I do like the color rendering and advanced color tools (including the skin tone tool), I found that wasn't enough to make me use it exclusively for initial RAW editing. And it costs too much to justify keeping it alongside Bridge/ACR and DxO PhotoLab 6, both of which I think can create better results in some cases. That said, there are some images I loved much better going through Capture One. If I could combine all the features into one excellent RAW processor, all our problems would be solved! Now I'm wondering if I should resubscribe to Capture One. Damn you, Mark! 😂

If you look at the image of the man standing in front of the wave, there is much more detail in the wave in the image on the left. While Capture One may provide better saturation and contrast on import, I believe that detail and resolution are far more important. I can easily add contrast and saturation through my editing software, but detail and resolution are much more difficult to create.
@freetibet100011 ай бұрын
Resolution cannot be enhanced in postproduction. The physical resolution of your sensor determines what real resolution your image is going to have. On the other hand you can increase or decrease the impression of higher or lesser resolution with the help of software. There are a myriad ways to accomplish that. Usually a raw converter applies an initial Curve to the raw file as a starting point. This curve or profile can either enhance or decrease the impression of the resolution but does not increase or decrease the actual resolution at all! Fortunately, it is easy to sidestep that initial profile by choosing a so-called Flat Profile or Linear Profile that will not tweak the initial conversion in any way but will give you a much flatter looking image to work with. This is particularly useful when working with a high contrast image with a wide dynamic range of light. With a Flat Profile you get a much better starting point to work with but it is also more demanding on your editing skills. If your aim is to accomplish maximum image quality and you’re an accomplished editor many times the Flat Profile is the best starting point. But if your aim is for a more artistically pleasing look a Flat Profile may not always be the best profile to start with. As a summery; you can never expect a raw converter to add detail to an image that wasn’t registered by the sensor of your camera. On the other hand, with a raw converter you can accomplish enhancements or reductions of details wherever these details where present in the data from your camera. By using a Flat Profile you will discover more precisely what data your digital file actually contains. By using different methods, including Ai, you can build upon the data from your camera to artificially increase the output resolution, but remember that this is always going to be a fake enhancement of resolution and the software you use is going need to fabricate the details that was missing in the initial set of data from the time of capture. It is up to you if you like a piece of software decide what’s going to be in those unregistered pixels and fill in the blanks, or if you’re going to be satisfied with the smaller (original) size of the image.

9:11 Clearly I have been using the Exposure slider and Brightness slider all wrong for years. Based on this video I have now started prioritising the brightness slider and then secondarily the exposure slider. I am now finding that I am getting the dynamic range I have been wanting for years and I had even considered medium format because I thought that would have better dynamic range. Before I would always only use the exposure slider and not the brightness at all. This meant in order not to blow the highlights I would have to compensate with the highlight and shadow sliders under high dynamic range. This resulted in slightly less realism in the photos compared to now with this new technique. It looks like I need to watch some more Capture One videos to make sure I am getting the most out of it.

After playing with the 30-day trail for about half hour, I was impressed how much easier it is to accomplish some tasks compared to Photoshop, but saw nothing Capture One did that I couldn't do in Photoshop. The big problem, however, is that I use AI in Photoshop to fix details with better results than I could ever accomplish in Capture One or in Photoshop before AI became available. I'm now a steady AI user and would hate hate to do without it.

Great video Mark! Question, I hadC1 for a while, loved it but I still remain more comfortable with LR cuz of the ease in going back and forth between raw editor and PS. Is it possible to get the same result in post after editing, might take more time but can't you get similar results? Also, do you thing the initial conversion is that much better such that the final edited result is ultimately superior? For example, you show the initial conversion has better color and contrast, well can't I just adjust/edit the color and contrast in LR and get the same result?

One more thing I wish to mention with you is, it's better to use "whites" slider when you want to brighten a part of a photograph with a mask, the deference between exposure and whites slider is I felt is when you use whites over exposure in a certain part of image, whites increases dimension of that part, whereas exposure don't enhance the dimension, just keep it same or some time I felt it make it unnatural. So most of the time I use whites slider in lightroom to brighten a part or dodge and burn. Let me know your thoughts.

I have been using C1 since '14 when I went to Sony when PS and Lr both were at $800+ and for each full update and C1 was just $30 for Sony!!!! I got into Astro Milky Way in '15 and the first thing after the lens info and mm adjustment is the level adjustments like highlights and shadows in LR BUT the difference is you get white stars or the color of many different galaxies where in Lr getting the color of blue stars along with the blue sky at night a very hard thing to get. Also many do not know about Gas Air Glow like green for oxygen and red/magenta for Carbon Dioxide and many other gas colors that along with the Pegasus Yin and Yang colors that can be hard to see if city light glow is high used to be orange but today day white like the white of the moon when the orange light of the sun reflects off the Grey dirt of the moon's surface. The biggest problem is lens profiles not up to date but you can do a lens profile in Lr and bring into C1. Also if colors are a thing even indoors with indoor LED lights C1 has a big and small white plastic device that you take and image of it then use it to sync to all images taken with the lens at that place as a lens profile also if you have a lens without a profile in the lens directory it can be used to get/make a lens profile. You can save an image as a tiff or dng and use a better noise tool also! It takes a while to learn all of it kinda like PS but the results you get globally at first before using areas with masking like Lr is worth a first use just to get somethings that are impossible or a lot of extra work elsewhere. The gas colors (of a summer hot night upper atmosphere) along with the yin/yang colors with white stars is like gold for a night image.

I have always been a Lightroom/PS user but dabbled in Capture One once before. I found myself struggling to develop a coherent workflow using Capture One, most likely because I’ve used LR since day one. BUT, after watching you explain Capture One’s color engine and how easily it generates a mask for you, I am intrigued by Capture One AGAIN!!🤦🏻♂️😂 I’m an old dawg…I hesitate starting over with a new platform. Who do you recommend reaching out to that covers Capture One from A to Z? I can be a quick learn but I need a training program that can keep me from frustratingly fumbling around with the different modules/sliders/etc.? Also what makes a switch more difficult is the PS/LR monthly subscription I’d need to continue only because of my dependency on PS, LR aside. I’m not sure I am willing to keep that up and then have to pay for a new conversion tool in Capture One. Convince me…I’m listening! 😊

I was a long time LR and PS user and made the switch to C1 & PS as I was unhappy with the RAW file handling of ACR and Nikon Z9 files. I was initially very impressed with C1 rendering and intuitive feature set, but once they switched over to the subscription model, I had a hard time justifying carrying two subscriptions, especially after Adobe added full support of Z9 lossless compressed files. I have processed identical photos as a comparison and find it hard to tell the difference between the two, except for maybe portrait photos, however, it may be that I am not as proficient with C1.The 3rd party support for both LR and PS is also class leading, and if I had to use just a single product it would be PS hands down. Also, for the budget conscious, with LR thrown in with PS in their subscription model for $10 a month, it is truly a great bargain.

Left, Capture One after their policy change regarding perpetual license users. Bought DxO PhotoLab and their FilmPack and haven't regretted it one bit.

But newer versions of DxO are not free either )))

I had no clue you used C1. You are always showing Lr editing. It does have some different tools that are intriguing. I'm not sure this old dog is up to learning new tricks!! LOL

Have you tried the DXO RAW tool? It looks like it's processing raw files better than C1.

I have - it does an amazing job as well, but I prefer the RAW conversion in C1 just a bit better.

You have all of these Lightroom videos some of which are about the latest features. Do you use capture 1 to convert and then edit in Lightroom?
@MarkDenneyPhoto Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the photo but I always begin in C1 and finish in PS. Sometimes jump into LR or ACR in between.

I've tried using C1 two times in the space of three years; still not convinced to switch from Adobe. For me, C1's user interface just seems too cluttered, making me have to dig deep to find some of what I need to complete my editing. Again, it's probably just me.

Capture one gave me very nice 'auto' results. Unfortunately when i tried doing manual edits, it felt like the sliders were doing little to nothing versus what they do in LRC. Any learning resources or advice on what I'm possibly doing wrong would be appreciated. I haven't used it in 7 months or so. I'd love to ditch adobe, unfortunately i haven't found anything that remotely compares.

Can you speak to how Capture One incorporates non- destructive editing? In Lightroom, exporting to photoshop as a smart object allows non- destructive editing. How does Capture One use smart objects, or the like thereof?

Capture One is always non destructive.

Hello, I tried using the free capture one for fuji but I'm stuck. I can't seem to export my edited files into photoshop or even saving a tiff file onto my hard drive. So this problem is putting me off using C1. Any advise please from you or your viewers would be very very helpful. Thanks a lot.

The feature I use most in Lightroom is Masking, but it annoys me Lightroom does not provide full editing functionality for masked areas, like HSL picker and sliders, or sharpening masks …. How is Capture One masking vs Lightroom masking.
@rsimko Жыл бұрын
it is super expensive compared to Adobe's offering. Their mobile/iPad app is so limited and it is an extra subscription. Unfortunately. I do like what the RAW engine does but as amateur, I am not sure it is worth that price tag.

Do you still use C1, Mark? I see that you still make Lr videos, too.

Can you not make these adjustments with Adobe ?

A view from the UK. I am a newbie looking to use Capture One. Have you done an introductory video on how to use it? For example, download a picture - edit it - put it back into the file it came from - and back into my 'Pictures' file - this sort of flow. Why you put photos in which file for which functions, this sort of thing. You seem to just go from point to point as if the newbie viewer knows why you are doing these operations and i haven't a clue why you are going there. Can you take us illiterates through simply and slowly through each function please?

I find C1's biggest downside is cost. They just seem a bit greedy to me. If they brought their subscription pricing more in line with the LrC/PS plan I think their user base would increase overnight. But, they don't seem to listen to us or care. Their premium price is not justified IMHO.

How much is it? I'll have to check it out when I get home.

I stopped using capture one because the subscription is too expensive, I switched to adobe just because of the price.

Hi Mark I have tried C1, I currently use Lightroom and Photoshop, but what stops me going over is the price. Here in Europe the subscription is 50% more than Adobe and the perpetual license is $300 and they will not update it. So what happens if I change my camera, need I buy another version? Sorry to say it but although it is a powerful editing software, they are milking their customers.
@Fessoid Жыл бұрын
More than a year ago there is only one version of C1 for all cameras. And they rarely add significant features to their releases, so it is possible to by licence once in a 2-3 years.

It's a pity that if we send the file to Ps and then to C1, the histogram changes a bit, etc...
@martindady4197 Жыл бұрын
Great videos Mark. Quick question. Many of your videos are Lightroom-centric. Will you now be moving permanently to Capture One and focusing your content more on this tool?
@MarkDenneyPhoto Жыл бұрын
No, the majority of my editing videos will remain LR focused as that’s what most people use. I’ll continue to make a C1 and PS video from time to time though.

I always use Capture One + Color efex (for some final touch), and I would never switch to LR even I know the AI bla bla, the subject selection bla bla.... for me C1 is just way more professional tool

If they ever truly support OM-Systems correctly I would consider them but you still cannot save to DNG and no support for tethering.
