Love this content my dude. I'm saving 55%of my post tax pay. I make 100k or more a year. This year I'm on pace for 115k. I'm also trying to save to retire by 50, 45if I'm lucky. I'm an electrician with no student debt, no other consumer debt and own my own home. Got about 25k saved so far, it tough with a wife and 3 kids but I'm very frugal and think I can do it. Im about the same age you are. I'm 32 now so we will see. I hope to follow your advise and meet you there in retirement. I live in western NY for cost of living reference. As always great advice. Keep it up. You rock.

We just retired at 55 and plan to travel the world and vlog our adventures. We went for about the last 10 years and we were putting between 30-35% in savings. Thanks for sharing some great advice. I am 49 years old and I got divorced at 40 and was a single mother to four teenagers I had a mortgage & debt and was making about $30,000 a year. My total income with child support for my children and some spousal support brought me up to about $50,000 a year. My point is if you follow the principals of FI to the best of your ability you will be on a much better trajectory for your future. I will be work optional in six years and be able to retire comfortable at 59 1/2 if I choose to. For all the naysayers out there look around at your stuff all of it used to be money. You’re saving for your future even if you do 10% you’re better off than doing nothing. Do something. Live on less, make more, save. Good content. Thank you for your video.

When I see people in their twenties working at coffee shops I think it’s so sad because they don’t understand that their race begins as soon as they complete high school, even if it means taking the ged. In fact I encourage young people to put 1/3 of their effort in high school in their future career by taking classes that are complimentary to their career goal so that when they enter college or a trade school they are that much more prepared. I also tell them to only take programs that are in demand and start at a wage of 60k or more because they need to reach a goal of saving 50k per year. They should continue to save until they reach 500k . They should also find a partner who is willing to do the same. Young people are encouraged to squander their twenties not realizing how important their twenties are
@TheMoneyResolution
@TheMoneyResolution 2 жыл бұрын
The 20s are critical for long term success. If you get focused and educated early, it gets so much easier. That said, I didn’t start at all until my 30s and I’m well on my way! Anyone can do it at any age if they are motivated. But yes, young is great!!!

FIRE is wonderful and I'm all for it but there is one huge variable that is not calculated here, and that's healthcare costs. If the U.S. does not come up with a public option for people to buy health insurance, many people will not be able to retire early. I've had a few friends who have become seriously ill and watched what happened to them medically and financially. My friend who just went through it recently, lost his job because he used too many sick days with chemo and radiation. When he lost his job, he lost his health insurance and his income so he was forced to use his savings to pay for treatment because when you are terminated by your employer, you only have minimal amounts of remaining healthcare coverage which may or may not see you through to purchasing through the open exchange known as Obama Care. So my friend, lost his job, lost his income and lost his health insurance. He applied for Medicaid and was denied coverage because he owned a home and had a retirement account. His retirement account quickly disappeared and he lost his home trying to pay for all the treatments. By the time he depleted his assets and was finally eligible for Medicaid, he only had a couple months to live. He lost his battle with cancer and he was incredibly stressed up to the very end because he watched everything he worked for over a period of decades, get wiped out. This same scenario has now happened to three of my friends. What I would say to everyone is that FIRE is a wonderful thing, but you must make sure you account for healthcare and it's an unknown cost because the U.S. does not offer a public option to buy health insurance. This is why I no longer vote Republican. It will never happen as long as they control the government. If we get a public option for healthcare, many more people will be able to retire early because they are good savers. We should not go bankrupt because we get sick. It's just inhumane. I'm probably moving to Portugal where the cost of living is 35% cheaper and full coverage private health insurance is $1,600.00 per year.

They don't teach this in schools because the entire economy requires modern day slaves (go to school and get a job) to make money for the rich and wealthy. The day you earn is the day you're considered a commodity by the taxman, the retailer, the insurance broker, the employer, the travel agency, the finance industry, the entertainment industry etc. You are the cash cow for others.

The last few decades show that we are not going to be able to save for the future and the risk gamble of investments is now even worse than the previous odds. Our governments have shown that at a drop of a hat they will obliterate any area of financial success that involves middle/lower class people. Honing ones skill of understanding themselves and getting yourself into the right part of the world to make a peaceful lifestyle for you and ones family is the best investment that no one can ever take away from you.

@@TheMoneyResolution I, too, think that your content is really good. Therefore, I just subscribed and hit the notification bell to receive all of your new videos. I will be 56 on October 29th, and I don't have much more than a 6 month emergency fund so far. I live in an area where one is blessed to be able to earn between $30,000 to $40,000 per year. Many of the books I have read and what I find here on KZbin have the 20 to 30 year olds, earning 50K annually, as their target audience. I may never be able to fully retire, but I believe that it is not too late. What can I do to get started? I'm a single male with one adult child (she's on her own), I rent. I still have roughly $18,000, in student loans. My vehicle is paid for. And, I became "self-employed" in 2016 and am struggling to maintain my $25-30,000. income. Please, help me!

I appreciate your kind words and super appreciate your perspective! There's no magic advice I can give but generally speaking the answer is spend less or earn more. For you, maybe focus on earning more. Perhaps you could consider looking into a side hustle that's online in your spare time, since its sounds like work is tough where you live. I've made a few side hustle videos that are super up to date as a good starting point. OR use that vehicle to side hustle (Lyft, Instacart, Turo, Wrapify). But by the way, 6 months is great! Don't beat yourself up. That's something. Plus a paid off car. Nice. Best of luck and thank you for watching!!

On your list of savings accounts, the HSA is #2 for me after Emergency Fund. The reason is that an HSA account gives you a triple tax benefit and acts as an emergency medical fund that you can continue to grow and use later when you retire while not paying taxes on it or the growth accumulated from the investment portion of the account. I'm a fan of HSAs! (in case you could not tell).

I mean, you gotta be making like $300,000+ to have anything close to a 50% marginal tax rate in Canada. Emphasis on the "marginal"-- Canada has a progressive tax system so not every dollar you earn is actually taxed at 48%. Of course, there are other "implied" taxes, like GST, provincial tax, property tax, fuel tax, tariffs on imported goods, etc. However, those taxes are usually rolled in to expenses for budgeting purposes. Point being, if you are paying taxes that high, drinks are on you :) congrats, you're a rich enough Canadian to not have to need to save 50% of your income in order to retire early
@tomkat907

Barbara Shain I’m including all our taxes. For example, we live in a small town and pay $6K per year property taxes. My point was if we saved 50% of our GROSS income, with a family including kids with disabilities, we could not survive. Before we moved back to Canada, it would have been possible. As it is, I will not be able to retire at 65, especially with the added costs this year due to COVID for our youngest with disabilities. If I was living large like you clearly ASSUMED with no knowledge of my situation, I wouldn’t be watching videos like this one. Instead I’m working 60-80 hours per week, trying to also take care of a family and stressing about how to pay for all our new costs this year. But hey, you know me from my one comment, so ASSUME away if it makes you feel better 😀

Hi Frankie, I accidentally clicked onto your channel and immediately loved your content! I am a new subscriber!!! Please enlighten me on this matter... If I am saving towards "everything" AKA creating sinking funds, then my net worth really is somewhat of an "illusion" because it fluctuates so much... technically everything does... from the stock market to the value of a home ... So what is a TRUE net worth? Would it be a set amount of cash saved as a foundation to continue to added upon to build wealth? Let me make myself a tad more clear; if my sinking funds/expenses for the year are 50000, my net worth would be what I save in CASH (not invested in the stock market) excluding the sinking funds. For example 1 year of salary saved in cash is what I can truly consider TRUE wealth building? my TRUE worth? Am I correct? please correct- enlighten me... Thank you!
@TheMoneyResolution
@TheMoneyResolution 3 жыл бұрын
Hah - an excellent question. Yes, your net worth includes all assets, including those invested. So, you should include the investments and all savings in your number. However, I understand how this can get confusing/frustrating because it does change all the time - especially investments because of the market changing daily. Because of that, I don't get too hung up on knowing my "exact" net worth on any given day. I check it once a week or even just when I get paid to see how I'm trending. There are free sites like Personal Capital I recommend because you can see/track your net worth change over time. The deflating part can be when you start saving more but the market is soft. It can be discouraging to see your net worth maybe go down in that scenario. But stay the course. It always bounces back. Some of those tracking apps will categorize it so you can see "cash" vs. "investments". That can make the situation a little more clear in terms of tracking towards goals, for example. Does that help a bit?

Hi! thank you so much for this awesome and informational video, you covered a lot. I am a hygienist and currently paying off my school loan. I plan to save 50% of my income but the part that is confusing to me is where should I put this big lump of money? My job does not offer 401k, I have a traditional Ira maxed for this year. So if I plan to save, lets say 40,000 a year, obviously I can't put this in an IRA acct, as 6,000 is the maximum, so what should I do? Thank you so much for your help and keep up with more videos coming :)

Hi Lorena, this is a great situation to be in and 50% is an excellent target - but a bummer about 401K option. First off, great that you're researching and asking questions. Keep doing that! A few thought comes to mind to look into: HSAs and HSA investing if you have one (I have a video on that). Open a personal brokerage account and invest in mutual funds and/or ETFs for the long run that track the entire stock market, the S&P500, or a target date fund. Most of my investing tracks the S&P500 via low fee Vanguard funds (upcoming videos on all this so stay tuned). I use M1 Finance and TD Ameritrade but you can go with Vanguard directly too. Finally, build up an emergency fund in a high-interest savings account of 6 months of expenses. Prioritize this above all else if you don't have one. I use Ally for mine. Hope this helps and keep it up! Education is my actual #1 tip! :)

@@TheMoneyResolution Wow! thank you for taking the time to explain to me everything in so much detailed, yes I do have an emergency account, not much just $4000, I just want to tackle my school debt first, just finished off paying all my cc debt, ufff.. feel so good to be out of that. I also do have the fidelity 500 index fund and the fidelity total market, not invested much though. It looks like I need to open up the individual brokerage account and put the big lump here- thank you for this advise- I need to binge watching more of your videos to learn more about FI!! :) Your help and valued time is greatly appreciated.

That's awesome! Glad it was helpful. At the end of one of my newer videos I mentioned that I've started "coaching" people for free over Zoom. If you have any interest in chatting live, feel free to grab some time on my calendar for 30 minutes. No catch. I just like talking finance and helping :) It helps me too in terms of finding ideas for future videos and figuring out what roadblocks people are commonly running into. Otherwise, best of luck. Cheering you on! calendly.com/moneyresolution/introchat

@@TheMoneyResolution Hi! Thank you for offering me your free service through zoom chat. I will keep this in mind! I am going through a lot of changes at the moment. I just watched your last video you posted. I can't believe that you said not to move to Washington State, I just took my drug & law exam yesterday to relocate my hygiene license in WA. I went to Bellevue and Woodinville back in 2015, and fall in love with the state. The cost of living in NY is insanity and not even worth it. Left my studio apartment to now renting a room at a friends house. Anyways, I will for sure set up something with you once I am more settle down :), Thanks again!

That sounds great! No rush or pressure whatsoever. I hope my sarcasm came through about Seattle. We LOVE Seattle and Washington State. The joke around here is we want everyone to stop moving here so we pretend it's awful. Our growth is driving up prices. For a while, we were the #1 fastest growing city last year. Crazy!
